I think it is so hard to compare across era's, just as any other sport. Equipment as well as the competetion is vastly different.

While this is true, the courses have also changed immensely. I read an article where they interviewed Gary Player about Augusta and he basically said they have made it totally different than it was when he was in his prime, way longer and much more dangerous. He even refered to it as brutal.

That being said, Jack will always be the greatest to me. He was my hero growing up and was everything I wanted to be. It is really not fair to compare the two yet because Tiger is in the middle of his career. Also why isnt Hogan a choice or Bobby Jones?

Right now it would have to be Jack. I mean take a look at his 18 majors. And he finished second how many times again.... 10... 15...???!??! Don't get me wrong Tiger will eventually be the best to ever play the game, but if you are talking about who is the greatest player the game has ever seen RIGHT NOW, it would have to be Jack.

Maybe in 3 years after this discussion re-opens it will be Tiger because he will have broken Jack's 18 major mark. Isn't that what they always say as well... A golfers greatness is determined by the amount of majors he's won??

Right now its Jack
2-4 years from now, now doubt about it: TIGER

Not sure I ever wanted to get into this discussion, but Tiger is the best ever hands down for so many reasons it's disgusting. If he quit tomorrow I would feel the same way.

I just keep thinking that golf was ever so much more difficult a few decades ago when The Bear was getting his triumphs. Just thing of size of driver club heads and skills with wcich these guys used their blade 1-irons! I am not saying golf is eays today, no sir, but modern equipments are compensating a lot.

So I value Jack more.

My first experience with golf was watching Jack win the '86 Masters, beating out a stacked field of Kite, Watson, Seve, Norman, Price, Stewart, etc. I was pretty young then, and you all know, it's hard to shake off your childhood favorite.

I'm old enough and lucky enough to watch Jack and now Tiger, both are amazing players but I think Tiger is the greatest, even if he stopped playing right wow, but that's just me.

I haven't seen much of Jack, but from my (limited) viewing experience I'd go for Tiger. I enjoy watching him play, if for nothing else than the passion. :P

They also played 6700 yard courses....

I mean be honest with yourself, you take Tiger and give him those old clubs, I think he would stomp all over Jack.

Don't think so, Jack played against guys who weren't afraid to win (Arnold, Trevino, Watson, Player)

Name one guy that challenges Tiger like Jack was challenged...maybe Phil, but we are missing a few more names. Bottom Line...Who gives a S--T!!!!!!!! When or "if" Tiger breaks the 18, he's the greatest, conversation ended! I voted Tiger.

    • Temporary grandstands are in the general area though, a bunker is not so your relief options are different.  I don't really understand what is so difficult about this.  You should be more upset with whoever organizes/runs your league for not implementing GUR, not the rule itself. Especially since this is a league and if it's at the same course every time it's likely that this isn't the first time the bunker has filled up completely with water.
    • Not sure if this is best to post here or start a new thread but I'm curious which stats you pay most attention to/how you utilize Shot Scope's data/charts to drive your improvement/practice?   I have 81 holes in Shot Scope now so starting to get a decent sample size of data about my game. I can obviously see the strokes gained numbers but I'm not quite sure where to go from there in terms of how to assess what specifically I need to work on.  Obviously it's approaches and short game for me, but when I go into those tabs on the left for those specific areas, I'm not quite sure how to use the information to make it actionable in my practice.
    • I guess we’re kind of getting into semantics here, but you state “trading a bunker lie for a grass lie”. I would argue that a bunker under water is no longer a bunker. It is basically a small pond where there isn’t supposed to be one. The course has an unplayable condition due to weather and poor maintenance. Hitting a ball out of three inches of water is not a realistic option any more than hitting through a temporary grandstand is. Just my opinion.
    • So here’s the thing, you’ve treated the bunker as if it were GUR, which would actually be the appropriate course of action except you and your playing partners are not authorized to determine that for yourselves. The Committee in this case would be the golf course and in an ideal world, they would have handled their responsibilities and told you at the beginning of the round that X bunkers are under water, treat them as GUR. I’m actually ok with how you handled the situation in a casual round TBH but this is the rules forum and you asked about a rules clarification so there’s a specific procedure for that. As for your proposed rule, I don’t agree with the logic at all for the reason I outlined in my previous post. You are trading a bunker lie for a lie in grass for no penalty. And also, there are already rules in place that address the exact situation you found yourself in, including relief options for if the bunker was appropriately marked as GUR or not.
    • Someone asked would pros accept someone else keeping score. It’s done in every other sport. That’s what scorekeepers are for. It’s an antiquated rule. It’s fine for non-professionals.  I feel like there is a lot of resistance to rule in golf, as if these rules were brought down on stone tablets by Moses.
