i dont understand the new adjustable R-9 driver.

(1) how is being able to twist the shaft/clubhead connection any different than simply turning the grip in your hand to a more open or closed position?

(2) if you turn the club head to a more closed position, are you not also delofting it a bit at the same time? and vice-versa?

i havent looked at one closely but is the hosel adjuster the only place where you can adjust the loft and open/close position? can you keep the loft the same and still adjust its openess/closeness? in other words, can you deloft it and turn the face to a more open position at the same time?

The shaft and mini-hosel thing are bent a degree or so. You can't bend the shaft/hosel connection by rotating the club in your hands.

As far as I gathered from the 5 minutes I spent with the Taylormade rep at a demo day when I tried it out that is the case but I think there's also a way to add more loft too.

Frankly, it's crap. Just more sales gimmicks. You should get fitted and buy the driver in the configuration you want. I rarely every heard anyone changing the weights in their R7's after they got them and set them the way they liked. It'll be the same with the R9.

I just bought an r9 3 wood for my birthday yesterday. I can say that I just leave it in the N position. Mine didn't come with a wrench so I can't change it but if it sets up pretty square to begin with when rested on the ground, by rotating the hosel, wouldn't the head still set up the same, but the shaft be further around?

Driver: Taylormade R11 set to 8*
3 Wood: R9 15* Motore Stiff
Hybrid: 19° 909 H Voodoo
Irons: 4-PW AP2 Project X 5.5
52*, 60* Vokey SM Chrome

Putter: Odyssey XG #7

Ball: Titleist Pro V1x

I the only way I can really see the the changeable head being a real help is if you say get lessons and change your shot shape. I have a draw biased driver, Im hoping to eliminate my over the top motion, I would then possibly want to lose the draw bias. In my case that means getting a new driver, if I had bought an R9 I could of just got my wrench out-thats how I'd sell it if I was a TM rep.

I don't know about the fitting cheap shots taken on this club. I think the ability to change the club is great, making it a club to last you years as your swing preferences may change. However, I really don't know what to think about the clubhead as I've heard many mixed reviews. To answer your question, yes the loft and face angle and everythign changes, but you know, that's why they've got the 20 billion settings. it's not just like the nike str-8 fit where it turns the club, but the loft is adjustable too.

I know this driver decently and it is not a gimmick. the ability to adjust loft and setup position is a benefit in the long run. It just gives you the ability to work more with one club and for the price its worth having any advantage you can have. When i have used the R9 is like having it set about .5 a degree closed and 8 degree loft so its nice being able to set up and go through the normal motions and just take your swing. I would recommend spending sometime with this driver and a club fitter before just running out and buying one.

A question concerning the R9 and the rules of golf…
Is it a violation of said rules to manipulate the club’s settings during a round of golf?

    • Day 24: did a stack session. Worked a bit on downswing feels during breaks.
    • Day 444 - 2025-12-18 Light day of hotel room work. GEARS Summit v2.0 today. Good day.
    • Day 38 (18 Dec 25) - got out in the backyard with grandson this afternoon.  We got into a little game of pitching the ball from about 25yds to a target point just off the asphalt lane behind the backyard.  Goal - just clear it with a quick hop and stop.  Focused on using the wedge swing motion I was talking with the course pro yesterday….smooth and thru just bruising the grass.  In addition to a concentrated focus on technique, it also called for a quiet mind locked in on target point.  Rehearsed this with both the 50° and 55° wedges.
    • I listened to the Shaun Webb one about the swing coach app. Sounds like a great thing and will (hopefully) be very useful for me. I do think the hosts are underestimating where AI could be in a few years. Right now it's just regurgitating stuff that it has been told or it has scrubbed from somewhere else and a human guiding things will be quite a lot more helpful than just the AI, but it's going to keep developing and it will reach the stage where it's figuring this stuff out on its own. Time will come when it will have you do a TPI style screen and take various height/arm length/leg length etc. measurements, have you tell it some history and your time constraints and goals and what not and it will watch a video of your swing face on and DTL and it will know exactly what you need to work on.
    • I found it entertaining, but the announcing was lousy.  How did the measuring on the final shot start with Rory being closer and being told he won, and then with no explanation it turns out Scottie won?  Weird.
