Do you think talking smack to “fellow competitors” during tournaments exists in the PGA as it does in the NBA? Or is it pretty much a "gentlemen's" game. I could understand it happens during practice rounds but during actual tourneys?

I don't think they talk "smack" but I think they have their own ways of getting under each others skin if they dislike each other. I would say most get along and either compliment or don't talk to each other at all. But Tiger and Phil have their own ways of getting under each other's skin in some ways I would guess.

I don't think there is any smack talk, but if they don't like each other they probably just dont say anything to each other throughout the round.

I don't know about the PGA Tour, but I'll get up in your a$$ during a friendly competition. When my friends and I golf we're freakin brutal, but during our tourneys we're pretty respectable.

Golf is a mental game, derailing with that kind of stuff is not how I game. During a practice round with a friend we might joke, saying "It's still your turn" etc., but never smack talk, that is not a part of golf in my opinion.

They might be inclined to talk some smack during a practice round or a pro-am. But I bet it’s that G-rated gentle ribbing – probably no truly caustic comments - like degrading ad hominem remarks or observations concerning the promiscuity of one’s mother.

I would suspect not in competition, practice maybe. Golf is so humbling that I think it would be very hard to talk smack at that level.

    • I'll poke a dead horse here. I like chipping, always have. However, if its a relatively clean roll I'll putt. I choke down just a bit, in my head I'm taking a little flex out of the shaft seems to stay on line better because I usually need to give it some horsepower to get it rolling good. I had about a 20 yard or so chip in to save par the other night in league night. That was the end of my 4 hole even par stretch. All down hill after that.

    • This is a relevant topic, beyond the statistical nonsense. Generally, if I can use a putter and the grass is not long or uneven, I believe my results are better with the putter than another club.  Some of the green aprons, when dry, are virtually like a slightly slower green. There are other players who swear they get better results chipping from eerywhere other than the green. I suspect a short game guru has studied this and has a general recommendation.
