How Much Grief Do You Get for Playing Golf?

My wife is class,she never complains when i play golf,even though she does'nt
play she loves watching it and knows all the players.If i am not there she will still watch it.Probably does'nt help that i have the whole family completely brainwashed about golf

My wife usually plays with me so no problems there. Problems usually come in when I have hockey games and such on the weekends.

My wife understands I was a golfer before we met and she likes the quiet time around the house when I'm gone twice a week. I have a friend that played to an 8 before he met his wife now he is about a 15. His wife hates golf.

Last year a little from family members because I had no job at all during the summer and all i did was play golf all day...my dad got a little mad at me, haha.

This year I will get a job this summer and balance it with playing 3-4 times per week.

It used to be an issue, so I started to encourage her to get her own hobbies. She likes scrapbooking, but like most women, she won't do it on a regular basis because there is "so much to do around the house!" Finally I had to tell her that I was going to golf every Sunday, rain or shine. Even if I don't know if I'm going, I'm going! I also removed the "you don't spend any time with us" argument by going at the crack of dawn. I can ususally walk on any course with little if any wait and am usually done before noon. My wife and kids don't even get out of bed before 10 am. That means effectively I've only been gone from them about two hours. She can't complain about that!

Well I get a bit of grief, but I have to understand and try to compromise. She works from home and I work 5 days a week, about 70 hours. So I’m gone when the kids wake up and am barely home when I have to put them to bed. I have started to bring them to the golf course with me, so I can spend some time with them. I pretty much get on weeknight at the driving range, and 1 full round a month, with some 9 hole exec course thrown in there as well. My other obsession is Premium Cigars, So that might be a couple of hours just to smoke one cigar. She doesn’t mind the smell, but we only have basic cable in the garage/man cave, so she doesn’t like to sit out there with me while I smoke in the evenings.

My girlfriend gave me a bit of crap last season becuase i was going out so much, but now shes accepted it. She knows I like to play and I'm going to be doing it as much as possible, so i try to schedule my outings around her work schedule.

My dad gets the most grief. I play with him constantly and my mom gets mad at the money aspect because I'm going off to college in the fall. My grandpa is retired and he normally pays for us all. Family Foursome: Myself, Dad, Grandpa, Uncle.

I just bring her to play with me! My fiancee is a 14 handicap and plays better than most of my friends. She also outdrives them too (averages about 235-240 off the tee). If we're alone, we'll play skins to see who makes supper, does the dishes, etc.

My gf doesn't mind too much, so far. I only began playing last year. It probably helps that her dad golfs alot so i think she is used to it.

(to the OP) Have you ever taken her out on the course or tried to get her into the game? My gf loves mini-golf so sometimes when i go to the range we will compromise and play some Putt-putt before hitting the driving range. Other times she will ride in the cart with me until we get to the green then putt or chip from close to my ball. i have to say, she is a pretty good putter and likes out puting me on a hole.

For me - playing every Saturday is a given. She will join me on Saturdays about 50% of the time.

I also will not get a hard time if I skip out of work early during the week to play as long as I dont drink everytime.

The issue I get is when I want to play on Sundays too. I may try to trade sex to get out that extra day. Ive offered to play more tennis with her but that hasnt gotten me a free pass on Sundays yet.

Most of everyone here seems to be talking about grief from significant others. I don't understand relationships built on compromise. Then again, I'm barely old enough to have a girlfriend. Either way, I never stuck with a girl who gave me sufficient grief about a hobby, although this has thus far not been a problem with respect to golf.

Some of my lab-mates will give me grief if they know I've been playing... or reading TST... or listening to XM 146 at the office. But I get my work done and have plenty of time to spare, so it's just good-natured jabs.

My dad doesn't understand it, but he never played. Mom played as a kid - not very well, mind you - and is getting back into it now, so she encourages it. My sister sometimes complains that all mom and I talk about is golf, as if that's a bad thing.

Fortunately, I have been married long enough that the wife WANTS me out of the house. So the only grief is from leaving grass/dirt in the back of her car after a round. I feel bad for the newly engaged/married/young kids-family golfers. It is a lot harder to get out for 6-8 hours. Mike K.

Great subject. I used to get grief. Mostly because I played whether or not we had money. I never said I was smart.

Now, of course, money isn't an issue and I have no time to play. I got in 12 rounds LAST YEAR. At one point, she suggested I play golf on a Saturday. That's when I knew I wasn't getting out enough.

Basically, here's how it works now. I ask her if she has anything planned for the weekend. If not, I play. If she says, I was hoping you could ..., I don't play. We treat each other likes adults. Working so far after 16 years. I've already told her I plan on playing more this year, and she is cool with that. I'm a lucky guy.

being single I dont have to deal with this. My sister gives my brother in law crazy grief and he barely even plays (like once a month)

Id say 95% of them have been divorced at least once. Women need to chill out. Id say the problem is most women have no hobbies. What do they expect you to do with them on a saturday/sunday morning. Go shopping? Mow the Lawn? Stare at the TV with them? I mean on the days you are home what exactly are you doing with them. I guess its different once you have kids but still its kinda ugly if your significant other expects you to be at home 24/7. Golf has ended a lot of relationships though. Infact golf IMO is appealing to men because its all about the chase.

Wow, what a topic. I am a golfer, fisherman and hunter. My wife rides horses competitvely and coaches basketball. Tried to get her to play more golf, and she says she will take it up after she retires from the horses. She loves that so much, I doubt I will see her anytime soon on the course with me! My two cents is talk it out and having seperate hobbies is certainly not a bad thing, it can be the best of things. Maybe I am just lucky, but I have NEVER had anything but encouragement from her to do what I love.
