I'm going to make a purchase soon and my pro told me project x 5.5 are best bet for me. but considering i'm on a budget i wanted to know what your opinions were on shafts like the s300 high launch and sensicore shafts? my normal shot is a mid launch trap draw but i can work the ball pretty well. i hit it a long way also. 85 +/- 2 mph swing with a 5 iron.

whats a long way? I think 85 is about average for a 5 iron if not a touch below it. last time somebody measured me it was 83 for a 6 iron which put me right between a regular and a stiff.

Why did the pro select that shaft? Was it based on actual measurements, a fitting, or just a guy feeling? How much do you trust the pro? also remember in the grand scheme of things, the price difference between the 5.5's and s300 with sensicore is probably only about $100 for the set.

My swing speed is a touch below yours and I have the 5.5's... Are you looking for a higher ball flight or more of a mid launch? The swing characteristics of the two shafts are very similar but results are very different in my opinion.

As for the poster above... 85ss on a 5 iron isnt "a touch below average" at all... and most definately it wouldnt but you in between a regular and a stiff.

My pro and I thought the X Flighted 5.5s would be right for me and they turned out way too stiff for me and my 6 iron distance is right at 172, which is in their charts as a 5.5. Got analyzed and switched to the Nippons, which I love, and they are an R flex and a little lighter. Really like them. Lots of variables in selecting shafts. I can still play the stiff True Tempers in my old Pings, but the 5.5s seemed and played stiffer than "stiff" in my hands.

That really depends on who is doing the fitting. Some people will think differently. I swing stiff shafts and my swing speed is in the low 90's, high 80's(was high 80's when i got it measured but I've been tweaking my swing and swinging a bit faster). They work fine for me. I normally carry my 7 about 160.

I use 5.5s. I fly a six iron 180, and I have a smooth transition and moderate tempo. I've used the s300s, never with the sensicore. I love the Project X 5.5 shafts. I think they're a little stiffer than the s300.

I've played both, id say the 5.5's are a bit stiffer aswell. Prefer the traditional feel and flight of the s300's though.

Both are good shafts, little different feels between the 2, but still both are good. With that said I like PX shafts a lot. What I've found with DG's is there spine is anywhere from subtle to very marked, so if you spine the DG's they will be sweet. They do put more spin on the ball than PX's or KBS shafts, but I don't think its a real big deal.

For spining, its very easy and easy to build a spine finder for under 10 bux. Its on the internet under shaft spining. In short 1) 1 1/4" PVC T, 2) (I'm not sure about this one) 3 7/8" internal ball bearing thingies, 1 for each end of the t piece.

the fitter was working with Mizuno irons, and we were trying to decide if I needed regular or stiff, my swing speed on a six iron was between 81 and 86, which he said put me right between regular and stiff (dynalite gold on MX200's)

I guess it was incorrect to say that its below average, I am used to reading everything on the internet where everybody drives the ball 280+. my apologies.

yeah i hit a 6 iron 175 but i can also go after one and hit it 180. i did have a real fitting that showed my average swing speeds which came out to be in the low to mid 80's and my ball flight is a tad on the low side. would you guys say that project x shafts are a higher launch shaft? i've narrowed it down to getting s300 HL or these project x shafts.

I have the Project X 5.5 (non-flighted) and found the ball flight to be a bit high (probably should have gone with the s300). I believe they're considered a mid launching shaft and I think they play a hair stiffer than the s300. good luck!

EDIT: actually according to golfsmith/custom fitting they're considered a low launching shaft...?

hmm i guess the website is telling me flighted means low irons go higher and short irons go lower so all your trajectories stay close to the same.

PX shafts - yuck! Played the 5.5s for a bit but although they performed pretty good, I couldn't get used to the feel; felt too harsh for me. Gone back to S300s .
