I'm 29 years old. Up until last year, I had the same clubs since I was about 15. Last year I started getting into golf pretty consistently. I felt it was time to buy new clubs. Irons specifically. After doing a bit, not much, research, I decided upon the Taylor Made r7 draws. I decided on the graphite shafts because they were more expensive so in my mind they had to be better than steel. Played em about 25 rounds last years and 4 rounds this year. I hit them fine and really do like em. But my question is this, would I hit the steel shafts better? I have an agressive swing. When I got my driver fitted, it was a shade over a 100mph if I remember correctly. So ultimately I've been potentially looking for new clubs. Now considering my handicap, 15-16, what would be my best option out of these three:

1.Keep my current irons and learn to putt :) (costs me 3-4 strokes per round usually)

2.Sell these graphite irons and go buy the steel equivilent since I am used to em

3.Go get the new Taylor Made burner 2009 irons that I have been looking at for about a month now, in steel shafts.

So which do you think I should go with???

If you hit them fine and really like them, why change?? That being said, don't assume that a higher price tag equates into a better club, and just because you're use to them doesn't mean that switching from graphite to steel in the same head will mean they will feel/swing the same. Go get fitted by a professional and still learn to putt!

get rid of the graphite, it is no where near as consistent as steel. it will take getting used to but it will be better in the long run. Did you buy your irons you have now from a golf store? if so that salesman should be shot. I only reccomend graphite for when its needed, i.e women, children, seniors, and the injured. you will be much happier with steel trust me

i think you should get fitted or at least demo the exact same clubs with different shafts... and different flex's also...
my brother and i have the same irons but his are graphite and mine are steel... i can hit his pretty well and he can clobber mine... but its more of a preference thing with us... i dont like that whippy feel even if our flex's are the same... the kick point is different too... ball flight isnt what im used to... plus i just love the chrome shine instead of a paintjob graphite

From a design standpoint, graphite shafts have a distinct advantage over steel, but I also prefer steel shafts in my irons and wedges. Less than 25% of irons are outfitted with graphite shafts, as steel typically has better control and consistency characteristics. However, with the advances in graphite shaft technology, there are plenty of graphite shafts engineered with the same control and consistency as steel. So, the short answer is that it comes down to personal preference. Whether you prefer steel or graphite shafted irons and wedges, the biggest concern is that they are built to your individual swing load and unload timing.

In irons I like a steel shaft more. Really it depends on what you want man. One option is, if you like the irons and decide you want to switch to steel, then go to a shop and have them reshafted. If you're hittin em well then I don't think I'd switch.

I got my first set of clubs when I was a young teenager, and they were graphite. I really like the lightweight feel of the graphite shaft and haven't been able to transition to steel. I always hit under the ball or hit the ground. I much prefer the graphite because its what Im used to. I think its a personal preference thing

Seriously? What shafts did you have before? And what do you have now?

(Just curious; I'm not challenging you on it)

Yeah does sound backwards don't it?I have played graphite shafts in my irons for more than 20 years and rule of thumb is steel is straighter and graphite longer.

See this isn't what I wanted to read... I hate all this tech stuff in golf. It's driving me bonkers trying to figure out the "right" clubs for my game. I'm getting to the point where I'm just going to keep what I have and figure out my game around the clubs. I just want to know if steel shafts would give me more consistency? I don't care about distance, I have enough of that and would prefer straighter shots more often. I just dont want to get steel and have to retrain my swing according to steel even if it's better for me... uh... I love golf but I wanna make sure this doesn't drive me crazy and away from enjoying the game.

I agree completely.

Well said. 100+mph driver swing speed......I'd figure you for a mild stiff steel iron shaft...that's just my guess. The clubfitter can put you on it. PING is rolling out the G5s for a song right now....the fitting is free and trust me...it does make a difference!!! I'm so much happier with the shafts I'm hitting now....great trajectories and more distance....consistency on solid swings. Steel is the deal......
