My advice is to qualify for the Open if you want to play there.. I've read in past Opens the courses close several weeks even months in advance.

How hard is it normally to get onto the black?

Last year it was not so hard to get a tee time.. i called like 2 times a day and by the second or third day got it.. this year i am calling daily and cant get anything. If you live in new york for the other courses what i suggest you do is get your self in the tee time system. What you need to do is fax a copy of your ny driver's license AND write or type out all of the information that appears on the front of it, plus your telephone number (an email address would help, too), in case the image is unreadable via the fax. The number to fax is 516-753-0413... They say you should be in the system within 72 hours.. The next step is calling the tee time system - 516-249-0707 .. You need your driver license id number when you call, But if you do all this you should be able to get onto the other courses, and even black you just have to get lucky.. GOOD LUCK

Just called the reservation hotline and they had a tee time available for Sunday.
They had a single available for 9:39AM.
I just reserved a tee time for 11:36AM for two.

Yes the Black. Just call the hotline and press a bunch of 1's for Black, Sunday, Single, and 0800* for the time. I'm thinking someone cancelled today due to the 30MPH winds due on Sunday.

I played the Black last saturday with my son. I showed up at 5:30pm Fri night for Sat play. I got last two spots available for walk ons. Reservations next to impossible to get right now unless you have a phone with priority routing. First 6 teetimes every day for walk ons. Day I was there 12 guys were up from NC. They played Red friday and left cars in slots for play for sunday. Was great night as majority of guys hanging were friendly. Had nice dinner in club few brewskis and ......smooth 95 from back tees. Son who is scratch had a great 79. Good Luck

I played the Black 2 weeks ago on a Tuesday after the the huge rains on Monday night. When I got there they had me at 920 but they moved me up to the second time 8:09.They had a single playing behind us and a twosome behind him. Many people seem to be cancelling if the weather looks iffy so I would suggest to try on days that they say do not look to good.JUST KEEP CALLING.

I will be passing through the area on this thursday night. What time do you think i'd need to arrive on Thus in order to get on as a single on friday morning. This will be my only chance... moving back to california (can't wait to get back to Harding Park!!!)

Thanks for the input in advance.

When convenient swing by pull into parking spot and ask folks already lined up. You'll have your answer. Guys hanging will share a brewski or two and there's a decent meal to be had and you might have a great time. Anything's possible as a single....Good Luck

Everytime ive played there in the last few years i have just walked in as a single and gotten on. Its wasnt really that hard to play there until recently. Im in the parks system, but i chose just to do it that way.

If youre not a resident, my recommendation would be forget about the Black for at least a year, maybe two. Its just going to be over-ran with trophy hunters for the forseeable future. The Blue is just as good as the Black, anyway. Try that one.

Yipeee!

I'm playing this Sunday, and we got the time by calling like any other civilian (and NY state resident).

So it's not impossible, but difficult.

    • And  he  has had alot  of  health issues as you expect  from someone still playing at  67
    • Good read (pun intended) as I have been using my feet more to feel the break and trusting these 65yr eyes less.  The only caveat to my case is that most rounds I wear a carbon graphite brace that runs the length of my left foot (replicates the toe "lift" sensation while walking by putting pressure on the rear of the left calf muscle and makes a great conversation piece to the guys I play with), and I tend to find the weight sensation somewhat muted on that foot when I wear it.  I do occasionally play without it and the left foot read gives a better transmission of info.  However not matter which way I'm playing that day (brace/no brace), pacing off the distance and coming back about 1/2 way and getting a foot read has really helped me determine the break, the startline and oveall pace.  Using my feet has definitely improved my confidence in terms of putting.
    • To still be winning tournaments at 67 is quite incredible. He must also be the youngest person to have shot his age or better by however many times he's done it. Amazing.
