After I'm swinging well for a while, my swing speeds up, and my hands get flippy through impact. What can I do to prevent this? Thanks

I do the same - when I can get my tempo right, I hit it dead straight where I want. But then one swing too fast and I'm ruined for a while. Pretty sure this is due to my muscle memory of swinging a baseball bat (once could hit 80+ mph fastballs). I can't slow down enough; how do I break this pattern? Thx!

Come up with some kind of routine in your head for your tempo....1-2-2-1 for example. Anything that will help you keep up with the tempo in your head. This way when you start getting faster you can tell quickly and use this template to slow it back down

Tom Watson said he found a song that matched the tempo of his swing and would play the song in his head to keep his tempo.

I know my distances pretty well. when I get that way I honestly try to hit the club shorter

For example. 150 yd shot. I pull out my 8 iron and honestly try to hit it 130 yds to slow myself down.

Or you could go with a club more and make a 3/4 swing to try and slow down your tempo as well.

One thing I do (and I am currently doing it with my driver) is to use a 'split grip'. I put my hands on grip like normal with my interlock and then drop my right hand straight down about 1 inch or a little more then just swing like normal. It's amazing how this helps. Bad hooks and slices usually become soft draws or fades with this because it forces your forearms to rotate over the correct way. Try it on the range and you might find this works for you (or maybe not...) I have actually been playing this way with my driver the last couple rounds and have only missed 2 fairways in last 27 holes. It might cause the loss of a little distance but it's a good drill that you can actually use on course.

thanks guys. One more thing. On the way back i start hinging really early, and it starts going way outside on the backswing. Also, my hands start flipping through impact. Anything to help those?

Or you could go with a club more and make a 3/4 swing to try and slow down your tempo as well.

Either of these 2 approaches seem to work for me when I start to rush through the ball. Some people seem to like the idea of "this is plenty of club so I'll swing easy" and others like " I'm going to hit this club the distance I know I can control". Try both and see which one you like. Good luck.

The split grip drill will not allow your hands to flip or let you take the club outside (at least not much).

For the takeaway, think of someone standing behind you with a catcher's mitt and you are trying to put the clubhead in the mit on the backswing...this will give you a straighter takeaway.

For impact, try to picture the back of your lead hand facing the target at impact..you may feel like you are actually pulling the club through instead of swinging it through. This helps get the hands through first without "flipping" the hands.

All good suggestions, thanks! Although, what I feel I'm really up against is the muscle memory from my past. Anyone have specific thoughts on how to break down (or destroy?!?) that memory? Are there known training exercises?

    • Day 21, May 25.  Hit "the whole bucket" as practice today after reviewing my Skillest lesson.  I think something crept into my swing last week that wasn't in the lesson, so I went back to the lesson and renewed my focus.  Each ball was a minute or so, 2-3 slow rehearsal backswings and checking the mirror for how far back I was going. "The whole bucket" means every ball I have in the bin at my indoor practice room;  I counted when I put them back, that's six dozen plus six total.  That is probably more full swings than I took over the weekend (excluding range warm-ups) in two rounds!  But these were all with a 6-iron.
    • Day 265 5-25 Hit some balls just to see where i was, no "thoughts' except getting arms in front. Did some recording where i focused on getting chest through and arms in front. 
    • Day 76 (25 May 26) - Broke out the "vintage" clubs (MacGregor blades, Wilson 4150 laminates) to work with clubs that are much less forgiving.  Worked through the bag using hard foam balls for the full swings, regular balls for the chips and pitches.  Found it to be a more focused session on making consistent contact.  
    • Can you elaborate on this?  There's a par-4 hole at the course I've played the most (was my home course for over a decade, now 50 miles away but I still go and play there) whose green is below the fairway and I realized recently it's one of three holes on the course I've never made birdie, despite that I often have a short iron into the green for my second shot.  It isn't even that I haven't made birdie, but I realize I often don't hit the green.  My typical play of the hole is to have a near-GIR and sometimes I get up and down, but not as often as I would if I were trying to 2-putt.
