I'm buying clubs for a friend, and he has a pretty bad swing. It's slow, although it has good tempo. It's the usual, take inside, cross at the top, and throw the club over the top for a shot that drifts way right and short. I was thinking a nice set of Adam's, any other ideas? Thanks

you can't buy a swing. He needs to get to a shop and swing clubs to see what he likes.

In my bag:

some golf clubs

a few golf balls

a bag of tee's some already broken the rest soon to be

a snickers wrapper (if you have seen me play, you would know you are not going anywhere for a while)

and an empty bottle of water

no im not asking for clubs that will miraculously make him better. I'm just thinking of brands that would be good for him to try in the shop. Obviously ap1's are not good for him, so just some suggestions. Thanks.

I find the ping g10's to be easier to hit and forgiving than other irons that I've tried. They are considered "extreme forgiveness" irons -- whatever that means

Clubs for your friend

Tell him to get a set of game improvement irons that have some hybrids in there. Seems like many of those sets have hybrids instead of 3 and 4 irons. Check out the Callaway Big Bertha "Ibrids" set up. Several others I am sure. Get a driver with 11 or 12 degrees of loft and a medium flex shaft if the clubhead speed is suitable. MOST folks have too stiff a shaft and not enough loft in the driver. The Callaway Big Bertha 460 is on sale at Edwin Watts for $149. Good deal. Then tell your friend to get some lessons. You, I mean he, would be amazed what six or eight 30 minute lessons with a local PGA pro would do. Just no substitute for good fundamentals. I wish there was, but there is not. Take some lessons. I mean, tell him to take some lessons...

My own personal opinion has always been to go cheap while you're still learning the game and developing the swing... you can reward yourself with nice clubs once you improve. I would find a used set, or perhaps an off-brand that you can get cheap.

If money isn't much of an issue or he really wants a decent set, have him try out some hybrid clubs - perhaps a combo set of irons/hybrids might be a good place to start (lots of brand names make these sets... Adams, Cleveland, Nike, etc.) Really, you can't go wrong with any GI or SGI sets, so long as your friend tries them out and likes them for him/herself.

No joke... try a senior set. If his swing is that slow and odd to begin with... that might work the best.

I picked up some Ping G5 irons for a great price for 5-PW and then added a couple Nickent hybrids instead of long irons. So far this is proving to be a nice and forgiving setup. I had a tee shot with my either iron that was not struck perfect but the shot was beautiful and stopped 2 feet from the pin. With my blades this should would have definitely gone off line at least 10-15 yards probably, if not more.

I would probably look for a decent used set that is somewhat forgiving to let him practice with to make sure he's going to stay with the game. I gave my neighbor a set of knock-off taylormade's with the bubble shaft from back in the early 90's to try them see if he really wanted to play the game. I re-gripped them for him and went on a couple rounds with him to give him some pointers. He actually had a decent swing, but he is not the kind of golfer that wants to dedicate much of his time to practice, so the clubs sit in his garage. Let him go out and get his own clubs...and pay for them...and then practice..practice..practice. I wouldn't worry about forgiving at this point. If his swing sucks, no club will correct that.

True Lessons would be the best place to start, but some good "extreme game improvement irons:
1. Adams IDEA Tech a3 or a4 OS
2. Callaway Big Bertha
3. Callaway FTi-brid
4. Cleveland Launcher Hybrids/Iron
5. Mizuno MX-100 or MX-200
6. Cobra SZ Wide Sole

I'm sure there are many more, and I'm not sure how much you want to spend, if it was me I'd get him the Mizuno MX-100's. High quality club, proven technology, and maximum forgiveness.

If i were you i wouldnt buy irons with huge soles, i can say from experience that sometimes theyjust get in the way. If he swings off plane but makes decent contact, a huge sole wont help anything. My mp-57s have a much smaller sole than my old irons, but they are easier to hit. Maybe try the TaylorMade r7 Draw. It wont correct the slice but if he gets lessons simultaneously, they will help, plus they are pretty cheap.

Callaway Big Berthas are another option.

This works for me, but I only moderately suck. Seriously, very forgiving irons. I got mine on the Callaway Preowned site. Mine are the 1994 "Gold" model Big Berthas. There are several models of Big Bertha irons and all are "game improvement" irons. Very easy to hit. If you find something in "Good" or "Like New" condition on the Callaway Preowned site, you will have a fine set of irons. Below is a link from the site showing some 2004 Big Bertha iron sets in the $300 range for "Like New" clubs.... http://callawaygolfpreowned.com/iset...s-bb-2004.aspx .

    • Day 23: weird day, and only had a little bit of time. Just did mirror work again, working on where the elbow is in the downswing
    • I flipped over to this tonight and thoroughly enjoyed it. Anyone else watch? I picked it up during the golf relay event, but seeing these pros out having fun in alternative events was refreshing and entertaining. I’m sure it will be on in reruns in the next week or so, so I won’t spoil the outcome. Im curious what others thought of it. I’m recording it’s later airing to see the beginning.
    • Day 443 - 2025-12-17 Made a few swings in testing some things out at another academy. Might pop up on someone else's podcast in a few weeks.
    • Day 37 (17 Dec 25) - nine hole round with my good friend.  We got paired up with a couple of the men’s group regulars as part of their shootout.  Started off with a wonderful quad bogie and then a dbl on three to be six over thru three holes.  Game went 180° over the next five as I shot one under (including a chip in birdie on hole six and four up and down 1 putt pars) for a net finish of five over. What could have been a really tough nine became a solid finish due to staying in the moment and not checking out.  Great day in course management and keeping perspective .
    • Day 127 12-17 Backswing and flow practice. Took advantage of the 60 degeee weather(it was 20 degrees Sunday)
