They usually have great service, but I went to my local shop just a bit ago and got treated like crap. I'm 18, and I got talked to like I was 5 and had no clue what a golf club was. I'm prepared to spend close to $1,000 on new clubs sometime this year, but if I get steered to the Ram full bag sets and told I can't demo irons because I'm not a serious buyer, then screw 'em.

Sorry, had to vent that.

Was it a pro shop at a course or just a regular golf shop in town?

I will judge my rounds much more by the quality of my best shots than the acceptability of my worse ones.

It's completely understandable. I'm also 18 and get treated the same exact way at many golf stores. It kind of pisses me off. Whenever I go, I usually have to bring my dad with me to "prove" I'm serious and not just messing around. It's ridiculous that it happens, but it's somewhat understandable. Because of several bad experiences involving my age, I will never go to certain stores again. Just find a good one or two stores/proshops you like and stick to them.

Don't fret over it. Go somewhere else and give them your business. The ones that want your business will treat you right

Exactly what I'm gonna do now. I tried giving business to a local that has been around for 50 years. Their prices are pretty high, I noticed as well.

Let me start off and say you are justified in getting pi$$ed. But consider they might be dealing with kids coming in all the time and pounding on equipment all day long. I worked in a guitar shop after I got out of the service and you wouldn't believe the number of kids walking in wanting to jam on a $4,500 Les Paul. After a while you get wary of handing over prime gear to people that are just in to play around. What I would recommend is writing a respectful letter to the owner or Mgr of the golf shop explaining what happened. If this is the first time you been treated that way then maybe you should give them a change to make it right. Just my two cents.

Not the first time, I always get ignored there, but never just plain disrespected. The guy was one of the owners of the shop. I just went and kinda browsed through the racks while there were customers at the counter, and then he came over and kinda took me away from the clubs. And it's not like I'm 13, I pass off as 21 most of the time and I was dressed in a golf polo and slacks. He even recomended Topflites to me when I picked up some Bridgestone tour 330s's (which I planned on buying but just put back).

I tried telling him about my game and finally he explained to me what exactly a Victory Red Split Cavity was like I was a child. I mentioned that I'd heard that the Vr SCs haven't lived up to the hype and he told me "Nike Vr's have more tour wins this year than any other, Tiger won this weekend with them. This is when I exited the store. I might email them with a link to the TW equipment thread...

Man, there is always somebody at the golf course that you run into down here thats in a bad mood to say the least. Down here in the south, they don't want change. Don't take it personal, I'm sure some kid somewhere came in and acted like a child and that's the impression they have burned in their brain.

Here’s what I would do if I were a vindictive 18 year-old and had $1000 cash on hand…

Enter the store and flash a fan of 10 crisp & clean $100 bills to the owner and demand some service – be snotty about it. Demo every golf ball, golf club, golf shoe, and every golf glove… making the owner and/or clerk run ragged to service your needs and requests – having them leave the place in shambles catering to you. I would then say, “The service in this place SUCKS… that’s right SUCKS, the only reason I’m in this place is because maybe I’ll buy it.” Then walk out… That’ll teach ‘em.

Haha that made me bust out laughing when I read it. If I had the money ready to spend right now I'd go for it, and take videos to post

I'm in college so I definitely know where you're coming from. It happens. I was in a local gun shop trying to buy a carry gun and when I asked to look at something the guy behind the counter said something like "are you gonna look or buy? I don't need you wasting my time with this crap" so I just thanked him and left. I like to support local businesses and all but when I can buy stuff online for a significant discount they better play nice.

I know it sucks, but you cant sweat over it. Just take your business elsewhere. Though age may have something to do with it, I'm 28, and I've seen that type of treatment as well. There's an Edwin Watts about 30 minutes from me, and a Nevada Bob's about 15 minutes away. I got tired of the crap at EW, and happened to be talking to a few of my friends at work, who have been shopping there for a while. All of them had the same basic comment - if you're not wearing a suit going in there, they're not going to tak you seriously.

Obviously, that's an exagerration, but they said they learned to deal with it, just because it was the only shop near them. That's when I started to go to the Nevada Bob's. The staff at that store was much more friendly, and when I mentioned a few bad experiences at EW, strangely enough, the guy had almost the exact same comment my friends had about having to wear a suit in there to get attention!

My point is this, dont let it get you down, there are just some people out there that need to learn the definition of customer service. If you have other alternatives near you, give them your money, not someone that isnt truly willing to help you find what you're looking for. If they want to treat you like a 5 year old child, then act like a 5 year old child - take your ball and go play somewhere else!!

I get the same treatment and I am 30. I was shopping for my new calaway irons recently and went to 3 big stores in the area GolfSmith, Edwin Watts, and a large mom and pop shop. My first trip out I was treated like crap at all 3. I had to BEG for someone to even speak with me and when they did they tried to sell me what they wanted to, not what I was looking for. They acted like they didnt even listen to me.

The next weekend I knew I was gonig to have a figh on my hands but I wanted new clubs so decided to go back to EW since it was the closest store to my house (by a significant distance) and I was going to ask for the store manager and demand service. I walked in and was actually greated by the manager and I received the best service ever. I took out several demo clubs and he ended up working with me for about 3 hours over a 2 week period.

The moral of the story are these places are hit or miss and unless you get someone passionate about golf you will be dealing with a young guy that does not care or an old crotchity golf snob.

Next time that happens, respond, "I don't know, do you actually know anything about the products you sell, or is your skill set limited to just collecting money and filling out a form at the point of sale......."? Sadly, in too many specialty retail shops, the associates aren't necessarily as knowlegable about the products they sell as you would hope.

Yeah I have had about the same experience at a local golf headquarters. I was working with the owner, he was a pompous ass hat. I even bought clubs there because it was a good deal, but then after the fact realized he was a jack ass and I returned them.

I dont buy anything from there, when I am bored I go in and pretend like I'm going to buy a bunch of stuff and walk out. I hate that shop.

Since your in Iowa Golfzilla in Iowa City has always treaded me well. My Local Dicks sporting goods has 1 pga pro, and a college kid thats turning pro next year, both are extremely helpful, and will talk your damn ears off if you let them. the only problems I have had with Dick's is when I order custom stuff or stuff they dont stock it never seems to come in...

That sucks. When you do buy your clubs elsewhere, I would bring them to this shop and say, "Can you believe this, I just bought these down the street for $900 and I don't like the grips, can you regrip them?."

If they ask why you bought elsewhere, say "cause that guy over there is a putz". If they don't ask, say, "never mind, I just remembered, that guy over there is a putz". People have been rude since time began. Good luck.

I feel your pain. I'm in my early 30's and while my job pays very well, I'm also dirty at the end of the day. I'm looking to upgrade my 10yr old equipment, so I went to a shop after work (dirty, workboots, etc.) and couldn't get anyone to even speak to me about my needs.
I've learned to laugh it off, and go drop a grand elsewhere... and I'm sure to tell everyone I know about my experience.

The rude service sounds pretty rubbish.

Absolutely no need to be rude back though, otherwise you become just as bad. Its like your golf game, forget whats happened and concentrate on the now.

If the place has the best prices, unless somewhere else gives service to justify a higher price, I wouldn't "cut off my nose to spite my face".

The other thing I would consider is if the store gets lots of time wasters who fit a certain image, you can understand why they would get fed up, even if you are not a time waster. Once you show you are serious they might change.

Finally as mentioned previously, often the owner or manager will give better service because they care. The paid minions just want to turn up, do their hours and get a check. So try and get the right person to help you.
