I have been toying with weight distribution in my setup for the past while. Weight slightly left seems to give better ball striking on short irons, with weight in centre suiting long irons and weight right for driver. Prob is I always seem to go with weight distribution being the same for all clubs and maybe that's why my long irons are flying one day and short irons are going fat and if I move my weight left then my short irons are fine but long irons going thin. However I read/heard your setup should be the same for all clubs but is this the whole truth or should you vary your weight distribution depending on the club in hand?

I'd love some input on this as well. I often struggle/wonder about this and have flip flopped many times. I have settled on same weight distribution with all irons, and weight a little back for driver, 3 wood.

i find myself varying weight dist, although im certainly not saying im right!! with my short irons i almost use what looks like a stack and tilt swing, infact anything up to about 5 iron. 4 or 3 iron i would be quite centred and as you say my wood play slightly back. Im certainly not going to give that as souns advice however but it works for me

last year my long irons were not going great but my short game was A1, from 100 yrds in I was zipping them up to the pin every time, and sinking a high % of 1 putts. My handi went from 13 to 8. So I took a few lessons on my long game, the pro changes my weight distribution to be more centred for all clubs ( I was nearly 80% on my left side for short irons and slightly less for my long irons) after which I started to nail the 5 - 3 irons. Birdies opportunities started to pop up. Where once I would be maybe 40 yrds I was now getting it on the green. Prob now is when I miss a green or have a 40 - 100 yrd approach I'm standing over the ball praying. Result being a lot of fat/bladed/hacked/butchered shots. Sad thing is my playing buddies have started to joke about "how much did I get for my short game when I sold it on eBay". My short game has gone as these short approach shots were my bread and butter last year. Gonna try varying my weight between different irons to see how it goes but just get the feeling there's something more fundamental gone wrong.

I'm sure everyone will do this a little different, just like we all have different swings. I try to have an even balance for all shots, except for the very short pitches, chips and sand shots, were I try to put most of my weight on my front leg.

Happy days, with hardly any practice on this idea of putting more weight forward at setup depending on club in hand I just hit my career best 4 over. Hope it's not just just "new broom" syndrome and that it is infact due to correct weight shift ... yehawwww , this game is easy :)

Hmm, I shift my weight alot in my swing, but at set up I would say that most of my weight is on the right foot. Interesting topic though

I setup 50/50 with all clubs on a normal shot. I find the biggest key for me is that I have to keep my weight on the inside of my right foot going back. If my weight gets to the outside of my right foot there's no telling where the ball will go. On the downswing I slide into my left side slightly pushing off my right foot which brings me onto my left side nicely.

Or at least this is the feeling I have. :)

    • I have been on a roll in November. Today was a 77 (69.2/115, 6,050 yards) on a wet course with dew covered bumpy greens. Better greens and I might have shaved a few more strokes off the score.
    • So, it appears to me that everyone is bringing out some version of the zero-torque, or square to square, or torque balanced, putter.  What ever name you want to give it seems like everyone has one of these types of things in their line up now.  It reminds me of about 10 years ago, when everyone had to have a counter-balanced putter in their line-up.  Callaway Media | Videos, Podcasts, & Episodes | Golf Content The Official source for Callaway golf clubs, golf balls and gear.
