swinging out to in with an open stance doesn't work. taking a weaker grip doesn't either. the only thing that sort of works is opening up the club face.

the weird thing is i only have this problem with my irons my driver and 3 wood are fine. i think the problem is that im over rotating the right arm over the left. what do you guys think? any pointers?

I find it hard to believe that a player with a “1” handicap index can’t hit a cut shot… and you want pointers.

yea i know. but its that bad dude i've always had a natural draw so i never really hit the cut unless i needed too. but the other day on the course i had a shot that called for a cut and i just couldn't pull it off. every time i try to cut it. it goes dead straight. the reason why i asked for pointers was to see if any one that was a lower handicap has had this problem and how they fixed it.

Ok Lets swap. I'll hit your draw and you can have my cut/slice?

I open my stance. To hit a trap cut, I place the ball back in my stance a bit.

thanks for the advice. i may need to swing the club more up right i tend to swing a little flat and from the inside hince the draw. i'm just frustrated right now i've always been able to hit any shot on cue. i just don't understand how something like this happens all of a sudden. i guess when i started this thread i was just more curious to see if its happened to any one else?

No need to do anything other than open your stance, open your clubface a bit and swing along the line of your alignment (a bit left). sometimes moving the ball up in your stance helps as well.

I'm down to a 10 handicap. At this rate, I'll get to scratch at 90 years old!

Here's what I do:

Alight your body where you want the ball to start and your clubface where you want the ball to finish. So your body will be open to your target and your clubface will be at your target. Swing a long your body line (out to in). If you do this correctly your club face will be open relative to your swing path and your ball will fade.

If you cannot hit a fade right now, your club face isn't open; it's that simple. Regardless of where your body is pointing, taking a weaker grip or swinging out to in, it's impossible to hit a fade with a closed club face.

Ok, I am very familiar with the problem you speak of as I have been trying to go from a draw to power fade for consistancy. On of the things I have noticed is do not swing more upright, this will make you steep and cause you to double-cross. Just open your stance and clubface and make the same swing. I try to stay especially on the balls of my feet, and the most important, you have to, have to , have to, stay down and drive through the ball.

Also choking up tends to help me control the fade on the driver.

I think sometimes you think you are set up open but you arent really because you are so used to being closed that straight looks really open.

Hope that helps.

If a draw is your shot you need to approach a cut as sort of a "semi" trick shot.

1. little higher lead shoulder than normal at address

2. Open stance......no brainer

3. Hands more vertical at the follow through, not the finish.

If this doesn't work your grip is too strong.

Thats all I got...good luck!

The controlled cut, hit with power, is the most difficult shot for me as well. I would love to hit the ball straight and have it fall one or two yards right on the way down. That would be the most coveted shot of all. However, mostly that is a driving range shot (works on the range, becomes iffy on the course.)

The only thing that sort of works for me is to be wide open, aiming well left, looking right to the target, and hit a "hold off" push cut. I lose at least a half club distance doing that, hit the dreaded straight ball from time to time, and simply cannot depend on the shot when the pressure is on.

The driver and long irons are much easier to do this than the scoring clubs.

I remember listening to Craig Stadler explain how he worked on creating his fade. He started with an exagerated open stance and club and hit balls till he could control where his ball was ending up at, or something along those lines. I think it was during playing lessons with the pros on the Golf Channel that he explained it.

you don't swing out to in with an open stance, that's you're problem. you swing normally with an open stance and your clubface pointed towards the object. never change your swing.

    • Day 27 (7 Dec 25) - Got in a few swings with 9i and hard foam balls in backyard.  Setup weight fwd (rebuilt left foot really lets me feel the weight in a slightly painful way) - kept the backswing to around 9 o’clock focusing on contact and resulting divot pattern.  Like how the hard foam balls come off the face (almost like real balls in sound).  A good abbreviated session as I only able to hit about a dozen balls in the fading light.
    • Day 117 12-7 A bit of chipping practice today. Full swing- hit some real balls to see where Im at.
    • Not the part I was replying to: Handicaps did not go down much (like 0.14 on average IIRC?) when we went from 10/20*0.96 to 8/20. And a good chunk of that was from the +s.
    • I think he meant in the UK. The old system was completely different from the new one. 10/20 x 0.96 vs 8/20 would really only impact very low handicaps I think. The 0.96 serves to increase differentials for plus differentials, where 8/20 vs 10/20 works to lower differentials for all. I don't know many plus golfers who would be upset that their index got lower. A lot of really good players don't even really keep their handicaps up-to-date. They're much more interested in their WAGR rankings which get them entries to certain events.
    • Day 433 - 2025-12-07 Got some work in after Junior Elite before a night of sports (and the return of my wife!). Backswing work. Similar to what a lot of my juniors are doing.
