i am also planning on buying a mat and a net so i can hit some balls in the back yard. what drills can i do once i got that set up? and what is a good mat? can i just use a rug?

Well I just got the Tour Tempo book. It emphasizes 3 main drills: the Y drill, the L drill and the tempo training. All of these you can do without hitting a ball. I can honestly say these drills have really helped my ball striking and consistency. I also practice my swing in extreme slow motion. I've heard doing this can really help with muscle memory.

I also have a mat and net that I can practice with. After a year, I don't use it much anymore. I think it can help, but the big thing I need is to see trajectory and the path the ball takes in the air. Needless to say you can see this hitting into a net, so I don't know how well I'm actually swinging.

This is what I've found useful to do at home. I'd be interested in hearing what other people do as well.

I swing a 6-iron inside my house. I just swing to keep my muscles in check or they may forget.

I have had some very poor results practicing my swing with seeing a ball take its true flight. I spent one particularly cold Alabama winter in the garage hitting balls into a net and just swinging a club without any feedback. Once the weather broke and I could head out to the course, I found I had grooved a nasty hook. To make a long story short, I would be very cautious about working on my swing without some sort of feedback.

I bought a 3'x5' mat for my net in the backyard and was very satisfied with both quality and price.

I agree with getting some positive feedback after working "the net" but I live behind an elementary school with 17 acres of playground and open space. I hit those "almost golf balls" in the playground to make sure my practicing has stayed on plane.

I do many things, I chip in my grass alot, helps me with my play from the rough.

I also have a ton of wiffle balls, these dont do a great job of anything but they will tell your ball flight (if its not windy) But it allows me to see my fade/draw and helps me work my tempo a bit.

On foul weather days, etc. I will practice my backswing or the entire swing in slow motion. It drives my dog nuts making him bark like crazy. This in turn helps me to block out distractions while swinging.

Not sure how much space you have to swing in your home (if you have a yard, I'm envious).

Since I live in an apartment, I try ingraining proper full swing mechanics by holding a club (doesnt matter which one) on both ends so that one hand is gripping the hosel and the other the grip. It really helps me ingrain the feeling of a coil. To be honest, I'm not even sure if it helps, I just tried it one day and it felt good! At the very least, it keeps you loose!

oh wow.. didn't know hitting into a net is a bad idea. i guess it does make sense..

IMO - Hitting into a net is not always bad. If you are working on a drill, for instance, it can be handy just to hit balls on a regular basis to program in a change. I would definitely spend some range time afterwords though. Just a thought.

Echo Carl ... I hit into my net in the back yard often. I work on form, tempo, technique. The feed back from hitting the ball 200+ yards comes from a consistent swing and sound mechanics. I can work on that hitting the ball 7 yards into the net. I have the luxury of hitting balls into the 17 acres of mowed playground/school property behind my house - but the swing mechanics come from repeating my swing into the net. IMHO ...

    • Day 27 (7 Dec 25) - Got in a few swings with 9i and hard foam balls in backyard.  Setup weight fwd (rebuilt left foot really lets me feel the weight in a slightly painful way) - kept the backswing to around 9 o’clock focusing on contact and resulting divot pattern.  Like how the hard foam balls come off the face (almost like real balls in sound).  A good abbreviated session as I only able to hit about a dozen balls in the fading light.
    • Day 117 12-7 A bit of chipping practice today. Full swing- hit some real balls to see where Im at.
    • Not the part I was replying to: Handicaps did not go down much (like 0.14 on average IIRC?) when we went from 10/20*0.96 to 8/20. And a good chunk of that was from the +s.
    • I think he meant in the UK. The old system was completely different from the new one. 10/20 x 0.96 vs 8/20 would really only impact very low handicaps I think. The 0.96 serves to increase differentials for plus differentials, where 8/20 vs 10/20 works to lower differentials for all. I don't know many plus golfers who would be upset that their index got lower. A lot of really good players don't even really keep their handicaps up-to-date. They're much more interested in their WAGR rankings which get them entries to certain events.
    • Day 433 - 2025-12-07 Got some work in after Junior Elite before a night of sports (and the return of my wife!). Backswing work. Similar to what a lot of my juniors are doing.
