My neighbors and I took another neighbor out for his first time golfing ever. He hadn't even been to a driving range before. You're finally thinking, "awesome, I'm not going to be last today!" That's where it all goes down hill. The new guy hits in the low 50's on 9 holes... his first time out. he even par'd two holes and birdied another. he hits the ball a mile, and fairly straight.

the last three holes I wanted to leave. But I stuck in there because it wasn't his fault I was playing horrible. I just kept congratulating him... until he started poking fun at my game.

God I hope that was just beginners luck! He's a natural athlete kinda guy though.

Sounds like he lied to you. That or he is just ridiculously talented at golf.

The people I see picking up the game for the first time look like they are trying to dig a tunnel.

Golf is a game in which the ball always lies poorly and the player always lies well.

no he's a first timer, his wife confirmed it. He played sports in HS and college, coaches kids teams, etc.

It was just discouraging. But you all know I'll be back out there next time!

Has he ever swung a club before? I am very good at picking up sports, like a baseball swing and I still dig holes in the ground when I go to the range, let alone on the course.

I kinda wanna call BS on this story. He polly has played before in his life, maybe a while ago.

I agree! I've only seen one guy, what I would call a "Natural" golfer. He went from never playing to a 6 handicap in 5 years.

I started golfing when I was 24 (38 now) and Im a 6, so I would consider doing that in 5 years pretty speacial. I would also ask him if he's ever played hockey, a lot of hockey players are good golfers too.

I went out to an executive course with a buddy of mine who was taking his older brother out for his first ever round of golf. This was back when both my friend and I were playing competetively.

We tee off #1, straight away 140 yard par 3. The older brother gets up, takes a mighty lunge and hits a worm burner that scoots up between the bunkers, rolls onto the green and drops in for an ace!

He just turns to us and says "This is a stupid game" and walked off the course. He hasn't picked up a club since. That was almost 20 years ago.

So yeah... I've had days like that. And still have never had a hole-in-one.
Don't let it bug you. Golf's like masturbation... do it because you enjoy it. Odds are you'll never impress anyone.

Of course you are assuming the guy has never lied to his life. Let me ask you something, are you married?

Heh heh.

And yeah, the guy could be fibbing. I've seen guys do okay hitting the ball the first time they play, but they lack any and all short-game touch and feel and ability.

Well he shot low 50's right? I say that is pretty reasonable for an athletic person to be able to pull that off. Depending on the course. I got a birdie my first time playing as well. Then it was like 2 years before I got another one. It happens.

Also, I've seen beginners luck take effect in golf like nothing else. When you start playing more that's when all kids of thoughts start to creep in.

I guess I'm just saying that it's possible.

My brother Greg is one of those "athlete-type" guys - HS Qb, basketball guard, good athelete yet at 49. All four of us brothers get together once a year for the "Green Jacket Open." Greg will literally not have picked up a club since the last outing a year previous and shoot 37 or some ridiculous score like that. I play in two leagues, golf weekends and am constantly fighting to keep my swing in some sort of order, just to shoot low 40's. Greg will pick up a club for the first time in a year and kick our @sses.

Maybe your neighbor is my brother Greg???

Depending on the course.

That's something I didn't consider either. Could have been an easier track than the ones I picture in my head when someone says "golf course."

yes, he shot somewhere between a 52 and a 58... So low to mid 50's. He's never, ever picked up a club according to him and his wife, not even in highschool. His short game is horrendous, but even a noobie can make a 2 foot put now and again.

he's crazy athletic, in his early 40's. His feet were all lined up wrong, he had a funny grip (somewhere between baseball and an overlap) and he twisted his whole body like a ball player, but somehow he was getting it out there. Now that I think about it, he was probably just muscling it out. He'll hurt himself that way.

oh, and the course isn't that hard. We play at it because it's hugely wide open and we all suck. Some of the fairways are around 100 feet wide with over 50 feet of rough on either side before you even see a tree. And by rough I mean like a second or third cut. nothing hard to deal with.

    • I had a few tweeks in the bag. I took out my Mizuno pro FliHi 3 iron replaced it with a Titleist GT2 7 Wood. what a change that is, so easy to hit, it goes so high without it ballooning on me. I couldn't get rid of my callaway woods ( Rogue ST Max LS ) but changed the shafts to Diamana BB 63 stiff for the driver and 73 stiff for the 3 wood. Than i got myself a new putter Odyssey S2S jailbird yes i joined the centershaft family
    • First off all i think you should use the same ball all the time. We all strive for consistency on the course, the only factor you can be sure it will be always the same is your ball if you always use the same. So i think we should always use the same. I recently switched from Titleist Pro V1x to Srixon Z-Star Diamond because it i get a bit softer feel around the greens and same results on driver and irons
