Lately, whenever I play my home course I carry only 10 clubs in my sunday bag, mixing it up a little bit each time I go out. Typically it looks something like this - Driver, 3w, 3hybrid, 5i, 7i, 9i, PW, 54*, 58*, Putter. Sometimes I swap around a little (leave driver at home for extra wedge or wood or long iron, etc). I figured it would be more of a challenge anyway since Vanny only measures about 6100 yards or so.

Does anyone else do this on courses that are on the short side?

Do your scores seem to suffer? I used leave a couple of irons out of my bag when I was walking 36. Now I have a push cart so wieght isn't an issue now.

On my local course I can take out my 7i, 8i, 3i and hybrid. I've used the 8i a few times, but it was a result of a badly hit 5i off the tee, normally not an issue anymore. I'll carry them for a tournament.

Honestly no. In fact they're either the same or better. It really has forced me to become a better shot maker - learning how to use a given club but differing trajectories for different distances.

That is what Dave Pelz said and I noticed as well. It doesn't matter if I don't have a 4 and 6 iron. I can just hit a smooth 5 and 3 iron instead. I can't remember the last birdie I made with anything less than a 6 iron.

For our Thursday work league, the course is around 5700 yards, so each 9 is around 2850. I would carry a 3 wood, 7i-GW, no sand so even left the SW in the car.

Yeah, wanna make 14 dollars the hard way?

I guy that works for me played a round with 3i, 7i, pw, and putter. I think he shot 82 or 83 which is pretty typical for him.

Weight isn't really an issue either. I'm as tired after a round lugging 14 in a stand bag as I am with 10 in my mizuno 'scratch sac'

Usually when I'm paired up with someone I've never met they get really intrigued by the fact that I don't carry 14. I guess I'm just curious as to how many people do this on a regular basis these days.

I carry Driver, 2 hybrids, 5- PW, SW, and putter which comes to 11 clubs. I'm thinking of dropping the 7 or 8 iron to make it 10 clubs.

I carry 13 now that I sent my 60* to a watery grave in several pieces. That was over two years ago.

Improving my shotmaking skills is definitely one factor. I guess I just like the extra challenge for shorter courses.

Sometimes I even leave all woods, hybrids, driver out of the bag and carry only irons, wedges, and a putter and tee of from a closer tee box.

For me not really about shotmaking but just wanting to lighten up the bag. I find it much lighter with 3-4 clubs less. I don't carry many golf balls either.

I play with a 10.5º Driver, 3W, 2-PW, SW, and a putter of course. So, that is 13 clubs. I'm still looking for another wedge to add in there soon. I've been playing for a few months, after a 3 year stint away from the game, and discovered that I need another club to help me out.

i saw a guy maybe two months ago coming onto the course late in the afternoon when the place was pretty quiet. he didn't even have his bag with him, he just had four clubs in his hand and some balls and tees in his pocket. i was at a bit of a distance, but it looked like he had a fairway wood, a putter, and two irons. i thought that was pretty neat.

i personally carry all 14 clubs - driver, 3w, 5w, 3-9, PW, 56, 60, and putter.

    • God I hate when golf can’t give me n+1 day of success. Drives me up the wall when my body is, FU! Im like, ok let’s check the vid. Yep too much turn, arms getting behind me. Ok, I work on that. Get the feel back for a shorter swing. Confirm with video. Then going back to arms down stuff.  Arms down, nope it’s hands out towards the ball. Oh, you get arms down better. Guess what, you don’t get to rotate and you hit 6 inches behind the ball. Yay!  Maybe I should have walked off the range and not wasted my time. I wish there was a body alert system when it’s going to a SOB for the day. 😭 OK rant over, I’ll be back at this tomorrow.

    • I mean there has to be some thought. For eg., something like 'soft knees and wrists' at set up and maybe a dynamic 'left arm to chin' as a trigger to start DS. I have these one or two anchor thoughts and have served me well. In fact, my wildest swings are the one where I have no thoughts or if I forget to walk thru my anchor thoughts. In contrast my best rounds are where I am consistent with the anchor thoughts.    OTOH, if I am running my entire half hour lesson (hypothetical) with some pro that I had last Saturday or whatever before every swing then I'm probably in trouble before I even get over the ball.
    • Two bits. Bit 1 The NCAA's appeal of Brendan Sorsby being granted a temporary injunction will not be heard until February, so there will be nothing to prevent Sorsby from playing the full season and potential CFP.  Bit 2 The Big Ten Conference will hold a meeting and is expected to ban all of its athletic programs from playing Texas Tech in the regular season. Georgia has done the same. The SEC will meet to consider a similar ban. Fellow Big 12 members TCU and Kansas State are spearheading a similar ban, but the conference charter might not allow it. Meanwhile, Big 12 athletic directors are meeting this week to explore what options the conference might have.
    • No, but I'm also in disagreement that golfers have no thoughts over the golf ball, and/or don't ever think I've met someone I truly believe is thinking nothing but "target" or something on most shots.
