Holy cow!!! I am going to try this tonight since I was planning on installing my new grips. Geez. I've been torturing myself all these years.

Is the vice insert a specialty item for golf clubs, or can this be found/made from supplies at the local hardware/home improvement store?

I just installed a vice on my workbench, and would like to use it for this process for sure.

I assume you're talking about the runner piece the holds the club while in the vise? I bought mine at Golfsmith. It was like $2. You can also wrap a towel around the club before you put it in the vice. You have to be careful with graphite though.

I was planning on regripping, but first I wanted to tap the collective wisdom of this board and get answers to a couple of questions I had.

If you wan't my 2 cents worth.

Use the tape/solvent method. A little messy, but virtually impossible to screw up. There's a reason most people that do this for a living use tape/solvent. .580 on .600 works fine, but it will make the grip a little bigger. I put jumbo .580 grips on my .600 clubs to create a super-jumbo grip (which is what I need.) I believe all the Lamkins are .580. If you have smaller hands, I would recommend using a .600 on a .600. One last tip. After you slide the grip on, immediatly remove the club from the vise and tap the butt end on the floor. This will ensure the grip is all the way on.

I am not sure what most of this means. I was planning to buy a set of 13 .600 Grips, and re-grip every club I play with. Is that going to work? Where can I find what size my current shafts are? I am assuming that a .60 Grip will fit on most any club, but might need a little extra tape to remain tight on a .58 shaft?

BUMP for an answer hopefully.

I would not put a .600 grip on a .580 shaft.

Golfsmith keeps some shaft data on their site. Hireko has some detailed shaft data about some of the shafts they sell here: http://www.hirekogolf.com/hireko/web...ting/mgsf.html . Scroll down and open the archived shaft data pdf.

I'd say it was more because of lack of knowing of the other method that everyone use solvent. Tape is used with the air pressure method too, you just don't have to goof around with all the solvent.

With a properly sized tube that holds the grip in place I don't see how you could mess up with the compressed air method.

Ummm...I don't know about other people, but there seems like there is a bit more to this technique than the solvent method.

For solvent it is easy. (1) Grip tape on (2) Fold in top (3) Put solvent in grip (4) Cover entire grip (5) Slide on When you do step 4 right, making sure to cover the bottom and top (those were the only points where I ever had problems), step 5 is a sinch. The solvent method is easy, and the "cleanup" is minimal. I just taped a garbage bag to the work bench, and whenever I was wetting the grip tape I just pulled it out so the solvent would drip into the bag and not onto the floor. No muss, no fuss.

Speaking of the size of the tube, what is a good size? I picked up some 1.25" PVC at Lowes during lunch, but that still seems a little large.

A bit more? How so? The only "problem" is that you need an air compressor. You forgot you have to remove the old grip first. Either by cutting or pulling.

By using the air method: (1) Put tube over grip (2) Blow into butt of grip and pull off (3) Remove old and apply new tape (not necessary actually, but preferable) (4) Put on new grip, apply tube, blow into butt and push down Ready for use at once. CarlSpackler: Try on an old club if you have. It takes some expanding for the grip to blow, I tested it a bit. Grip wasn't damaged by the expansion. It's rubber, so it'll shrink back down again. But to be safe you can use a tube that's a bit larger than the grip. You don't want it too tight, the grip need some room to expand in.

There's no option to "can" use a tube.

Please, you MUST use a tube. The first few times I attempted this method, I've foolishly tried removing a grip or two without the tube. If/when that puppy pops you can really put an eye out. Really. An eye. Out. Safety first is paramount. You're not dealing with TNT here, but there's no need to risk anything. Look around, you probably have something floating around in your garage that can be used. I mentioned the pool hose and bag divider tubes, but you can use anything that's just slightly larger than the fattest butt end part of the grip. As far as the comparison to the "old" solvent method. There is none. It's like comparing a horse and buggy to a car. Wanna race? I still keep the solvent and hook knife around for old times sake, but I can't see using it again anytime soon.

I meant that you don't have to use a tube that is slightly larger than the grip, you can use a larger one. Not using one is not clever.

I think an M58 grip on a .60" butt is generally considered standard.

incorrect, an m58 is standard on a .58 shaft, a 60 is standard on a .60 shaft. but yes it is possible to put a .58 on a .60 shaft. i use .58 on my fairway woods(.60) because it makes the grip slightly larger, and i build all my grips up with 3 extra wraps in the left hand and 2 in the left hand. they slide on just fine. i use solvent and double sided tape, it works very well just make sure your clubs are secured properly in the vise for any method of regripping.

Have a small bottle with a smaller tip for putting your solvent in the grip ..I use an old plastic Mustard container with a red twist tip. Have a aluminum baking pan to catch the unused solvent and you can return to original container. Cost about $1- .50 Use lots of solvent...inside the grip and apply liberally on the tape. When I pour the solvent out of the grip and onto the tape I am holding the clubhead up in the air..and mainly direct it from the "bottom" of the grip to the end of the shaft. Once you start to push the grip on...dont stop...go go go . It is easy but if you stop it seems to muck it up. Check graphics alignment Have paper towels to keep shaft and grip as clean and free of solvent as possible. If you let the clubs dry in direct sun they will set up fairly quickly. Make sure you do the finish work of cleaning the shafts w goo gone sprayed on a paper towel

The video was a bit of a fluke (fake). We do not know that the old grip was even adhered (glued/taped), and we don't know that the new one installed will stay in place.
