What about areas not frequently mentioned by the golf media, that don't have a huge variety of courses, but just at least two or three good courses?

Mississippi Gulf Coast. Not exactly a single city, but more like a 45 mile stretch. You can stay in Gulfport or Biloxi at one of the really nice casino hotels, and all of these courses will be within a 30-minute drive. Most of them can be reached in 15 minutes or so. Now I live about 30-45 minutes west of there, but all my friends and family is there, so I go over a pretty good bit. It really sucks though, because I lived over there almost my entire life, and I wasnt really into golf at the time.

http://www.hollywoodcasinobsl.com/golf/ - The Bridges - Palmer Design - Dad won a pair of free passes that he and I will be using up very soon. Awesome, challenging course.

http://www.fallenoak.com/ - Fallen Oak - Fazio design – Cant wait to play here in July! Absolutely beautiful! It's expensive, but if you're gonna do it, go all out and stay at the Beau Rivage. The inside is almost identical to the Bellagio

http://www.harrahs.com/golf/GrandBear/ - Grand Bear - Nicklaus design. Always hear good things, but never really had a chance to play it. Hopefully sometime this summer I can score some free passes. I guess I need to dedicate myself to the blackjack table at the Grand Casino for a night

http://www.sunkistcc.com/ - Sunkist Country Club - I’m so pissed, I lived less than 5 minutes away from this place a couple years back, before I got big into golf. It's not the newest course, but it's still nice. I went to a demo day there a couple months back, and it looked really good.

http://www.shelllanding.com/ - Shell Landing - Davis Love III design, again, heard great things, but havent had the pleasure

http://www.theoaksgolfclub.com/ - The Oaks - Playing here this coming Friday, it’s probably been 8-10 years since I’ve played it. Pretty excited about it.

http://www.golfcoast.com/golfing/ - A few others listed here. I’m not 100% sure that a couple of them have opened back up since Hurricane Katrina, but I know most of them are.

Spokane, WA. Great summer weather and many good, cheap city and county operated tracks.

Indian Canyon in Spokane is excellent, to say the least.

For a "sleeper" city, I'll go out on a limb and say Invermere, BC. Pretty sleepy. But there are some excellent courses to be had -- 3, by my count. There are all sorts of good pockets for golf hidden away... A lot of places have at least 2 or 3 gems within easy driving distance.

Whitefish, Montana. Not the place you'd expect to find a 36 hole golf resort (plus a couple other nice courses within an hour's drive), but it sure is beautiful.

Nice boost of confidence to play in high elevation too. The ball just soars.

Mississippi Gulf Coast.

We did our spring trip to Biloxi/Gulfport. Fave of the trip was Grand Bear. 10 miles deep in a national forest and immaculately done. Shell Landing probably 2nd fave. The Bridges was really nice, the higher handicaps in our group didn't like it, found it too much an exersize in target golf. The Oaks was a GREAT layout, but the greens were SHOT when we were there in late March. Worst greens I've played since the sand green course I grew up playing 30 years ago. Hopefully they're fixed by this time of year. George and the gang @ Gulf Cost rentals did an awesome job for us. http://www.gulfcoastresortrentals.com/
I've spent most of my life golfing - the rest I've just wasted.

Central British Columbia comes to mind. There are a dozen very nice courses between Salmon Arm, Kelowna and Kamloops (about a 100km/60mi radius)

My blatantly biased opinion...The Simi/Moorpark area, CA. Just far enough away from the LA chaos while still easily reachable. Including:

Lost Canyons (Sky & Shadow), Simi Valley--2 amazingly hard and scenic Pete Dye tracks, both top 100 in recent years
Rustic Canyon, Simi--top 100 and the best course under 50$ in the US
Moorpark CC, Moorpark--Best new course when built, 4.5 stars GD, and always in immaculate condition

And of course, there are a ton of other great courses within about a half hour as well.

I just found out today that the prices at Grand Bear have dropped a good bit, I think the afternoon rate is somewhere arounf $35 during the week, and $50 on the weekend! I couldnt believe it when my buddy told me about it. I'm planning on hitting it up VERY soon!

And yeah, the Oaks is pretty awesome too. I havent been there yet this year, unfortunately. I was supposed to play there last weekend, but it fell through. I had actually heard that complaint about the greens, but from what I hear, they have fixed them up, and everything is immaculate. If you ever make it down here again, definitely check out Fallen Oak. Everyone I know that has played it says it's unbelievably good. It's pricey though, since you have to book a night at the Beau. It's been 2 or 3 months since my dad played it, and he's still talking about it.

    • @boogielicious and I are definitely in for the Stay & Play and will need the extra night's stay on Friday. I don't know what the plans are for our group on Friday but even if we don't make it for dinner with the rest of the Friday arrivals, I'll be more than happy to meet up somewhere for a beer or something.
    • Taking your dispersion and distance in consideration I analyzed the 4 posible ways to play the hole, or at least the ones that were listed here. I took the brown grass on the left as fescue were you need to punch out sideways to the fairway and rigth of the car path to be fescue too.  Driver "going for the green"  You have to aim more rigth, to the bunker in order to center your shotzone in between the fescue.  Wood of 240 over the bunkers I already like this one more for you. More room to land between the fescue. Balls in the fescue 11% down from 30% with driver. Improve of score from 4.55 to 4.40. 4 iron 210 yards besides the bunkers.    Also a wide area and your shot zone is better than previous ones. This makes almost the fescue dissapear. You really need to hit a bad one (sometimes shit happens). Because of that and only having 120 yards in this is the best choice so far. Down to 4.32 from 4.40. Finally the 6 Iron 180 yards to avoid all trouble.    Wide area an narrow dispersion for almost been in the fairway all the time. Similar than the previous one but 25 yards farther for the hole to avoid been in the bunkers. Average remains the same, 4.33 to 4.32.  Conclusion is easy. Either your 4iron or 6 iron of the tee are equaly good for you. Glad that you made par!
    • Wish I could have spent 5 minutes in the middle of the morning round to hit some balls at the range. Just did much more of right side through with keeping the shoulders feeling level (not dipping), and I was flushing them. Lol. Maybe too much focus on hands stuff while playing.
    • Last year I made an excel that can easily measure with my own SG data the average score for each club of the tee. Even the difference in score if you aim more left or right with the same club. I like it because it can be tweaked to account for different kind of rough, trees, hazards, greens etc.     As an example, On Par 5's that you have fescue on both sides were you can count them as a water hazard (penalty or punch out sideways), unless 3 wood or hybrid lands in a wider area between the fescue you should always hit driver. With a shorter club you are going to hit a couple less balls in the fescue than driver but you are not going to offset the fact that 100% of the shots are going to be played 30 or more yards longer. Here is a 560 par 5. Driver distance 280 yards total, 3 wood 250, hybrid 220. Distance between fescue is 30 yards (pretty tight). Dispersion for Driver is 62 yards. 56 for 3 wood and 49 for hybrid. Aiming of course at the middle of the fairway (20 yards wide) with driver you are going to hit 34% of balls on the fescue (17% left/17% right). 48% to the fairway and the rest to the rough.  The average score is going to be around 5.14. Looking at the result with 3 wood and hybrid you are going to hit less balls in the fescue but because of having longer 2nd shots you are going to score slightly worst. 5.17 and 5.25 respectively.    Things changes when the fescue is taller and you are probably going to loose the ball so changing the penalty of hitting there playing a 3 wood or hybrid gives a better score in the hole.  Off course 30 yards between penalty hazards is way to small. You normally have 60 or more, in that cases the score is going to be more close to 5 and been the Driver the weapon of choice.  The point is to see that no matter how tight the hole is, depending on the hole sometimes Driver is the play and sometimes 6 irons is the play. Is easy to see that on easy holes, but holes like this:  you need to crunch the numbers to find the best strategy.
