Hey all,

I've been playing golf off and on for 3 or 4 years, and am just getting back into it this summer after taking last year off. I've been hitting some balls and actually feel that my swing is better than it was 2 years ago (I guess 20 months of not playing purged my bad habits.) Anyways, I've probably played about 10-15 rounds and was hovering in the low 100's (yet to break 100). I've been using my fathers old clubs the whole time, but am wondering if it is time for an upgrade. Here is what is in my bag:

1996 Callaway Big Bertha Irons - Steel Shafts. I'm missing a 9 and 7 Iron.
Callaway "Tuttle" Puter
Callaway S2H2 PW and SW
Adams Tight Lies 3-Wood
Callaway 3-Wood (I use this as my driver)

I can hit my short-irons decently (up to 5) but quite frankly am horrible at driving or using the woods. My question is, are these clubs outdated? Seeing as I'm a beginner will my development be impeded with clubs that are 13 years old? Is it worth spending money on new clubs or would I be better off using that money getting a lesson? Also, the clubs were for my father who is 5'11, I'm 6'2 1/2. Is it possible these clubs could be too small for me?

Thanks for your time.

I would suggest at least getting new irons (even an inexpensive set) for two main reasons:

1. Having them even partially fitted to you (I.e., shaft flex and length) would be a benefit.

2. Missing both the 7 and 9 iron handicaps you in your medium and short game.

Good Luck!

Being new to this, any suggestions on where to start looking? I suppose I can go to Golfsmith and look into a used set. Where can one get fitted for clubs? I think a budget of $400 for irons would be reasonable for me. Where would that put me, can anyone suggest a certain brand that is good for beginners but something that I can grow into and won't have to replace once I improve? Thanks for your input.

I would look at trying clubs at a local course/range. I am lucky that we have one nearby that allows you to try all the clubs they sell, and have state of the art fitting centers right on the range.

FYI, I got the 2008 Taylor Made R7's for $399. Closing them out, as the new Burners are the rage. There are even more "game improvement" clubs out there.

You really should at least hit some clubs before choosing a set.

Good Luck!

You have a few really good options for under $400.

Ping G5 Irons for $392 at Edwin Watts

Callaway X-20 for $375 at Edwin Watts

Nike Ignites for $399 at EW

I'm not sure if Golfsmith price matches or not. They have the Nickent 4DX set for less than $400. I also saw the Nike Slingshot 4D, and some pre-owned TM Burner and R7 sets for less than $400. Definitely get Golfsmith to fit you. Not getting properly fitted is probably one of the biggest regrets that I have. I can assure you though, I will have a new set of irons by the end of the summer, fitted to me! Then, I will have no excuses! Good luck!

Cobras FP's $399 steel shaft

Cally's X-18's $399 Steel shaft

Adams IDEA a3 OS $399 Steel Shaft

Personally, I'd search ebay and craigslist to see if you can find a matching 7 & 9 iron to your current clubs, get a real driver and spend the rest of the money on lessons.

Hey check out

This reminds me of a question I've been wanting to ask for a while. Can you get fitted clubs from TGW, or discountgolfworld.com, or any of the other better online retailers? I realize they cant set you up on a launch monitor or anything like that, but I'm talking about if you sent them the needed adjustments for lie angle, length, etc. Has anyone ever had any experience doing this?

And I apologize for the hijack, but this may help the OP as well, since he's about as tall as I am, and fitting would probably be very beneficial.

I use those exact same irons, 96 Bertha's, and I think they're amazing, especially for a beginning golfer. Get a 7 and 9 off ebay, and get a real driver. If you can spare $$, use it for a couple lessons.

Hey all, thanks for the input.

I went to Golfsmith yesterday, and checked out some of the irons. They have a used set of TaylorMade R7's (I'm not sure what year they are, but they have Yellow lining on the clubhead) that are in really nice condition and are only $299. I'm leaning towards that right now. They also have last years set, new for $399 and a used set of TM Rac OS for $169. Is this a good set for a beginner to grow in to? I didn't get a custom fitting, because I don't believe it is free, and to be quite honest my swing isn't consistent enough for it to really even matter, or so I've been told.

Hey all, just an update: I decided to take the TM R7's for $299 Used at Golfsmith. They are in very good shape and I couldn't pass on that good of a deal. I haven't had a chance to swing them yet, but can't wait. With the remaining money in budget I saw a TM Burner Drive for just $150 new at Dick's today. Couldn't believe they were that cheap. I am curious what loft you all think I should get? I know nothing about this, but considering I am a new player and not a very good golfer yet, what would be recommended? I read someone recommended to someone else who was also a new player something between 11-12. I saw one at 10.5, would that suffice? My swing speed hovers around 85 (slow, I know. I'm working on it.)

Thanks again for the guidance thus far, I was clueless before I created this thread, and it helped me spot a good deal.

listen, for $150, the TM Burner '07 Regular flex, 10.5* left should fill the bill just right. It's a great driver.

FYI: I bought the clubs yesterday and to my chagrin found out there is a coupon Golfsmith is doing until tomorrow which is 15% off used clubs and 25% new clubs. What a bargain. So I called them up, and they decided to honor the coupon for me even though I bought them yesterday with no coupon. So I went back today and got my very good condition used set of TM R7's for $254.94 + Tax. Fantastic deal, I am even more thrilled. With the 25% off you can get a new set for $300, but I didn't want to push my luck by asking if I could exchange. I'm really happy I shopped around and found a good price, now I can round it out with the 2007 Burner driver new. I hit the irons today, and they felt like an upgrade already. Have to get used to them, but I am happy.

For those interested in the coupon, here you go.

Also, can someone recommend a putter? I have been using the Callaway Tuttle, and I hate that thing. I'll go to the Golfsmith green and try out a few, but is there any consensus good beginner putter? Would like to spend around $50 for a used.

Go to the shop and collect every putter they've got that's in your price range; ideally get a friend to assist you doing this. Then, without looking at the tag again, try them all and take the one that feels the best.
