I recall various swing analyzes where this has been mentioned. Most recently in the Tiger swing analysis by TMO: http://www.kinestheticgolf.com/2009/...ring-2009.html

I'm rushing with the arms compared to the hips, but still sometimes feel like the shoulders outrun them and they lag behind so much that at impact, the shoulders are open and pulling my shots left. I noticed my arms being much farther behind at impact than on the swing videos I've stumbled upon on Youtube. I've wondered why, but never found an answer. Could this be it? The arms dropping without the shoulders turning much from the top?

Should the arms drop a bit from the top of the backswing without the shoulder doing much moving at all so the arms catch up with the shoulders and work together more compact like?
If so, do you have any drills or tips on how this could be worked on?

I think that this is another of the moves that you shouldn't ever really have to think about. I think an arm drop comes about as a result of the hips pushing forward at the start of the downswing.

What about a lateral wrist hinge at the start or during your downswing? Is that a big no-no?

Aaaw, Erik, you're killing me here. I'm supposed to be doing everything without thinking of it.

Again, I see your point, so it must be something I'm doing wrong, because my hands are significantly lagging behind the shoulders and torso. Maybe I'm speeding up with the shoulders or something.

To me it feels like my shoulders go before my arms(which go before my hands and ultimately the clubface). Maybe it doesn't happen that way but that's the feeling I have.

To be quite honest that's not something I've ever thought about though. It just happens when I put a good swing on the ball starting from the ground up.

Is there something that can be done or practiced to promote this? I remember hearing about a slight outward bump of the left knee to initiate the downswing years ago. Not sure if this is good or bad, but I think what you mentioned is something that I need to give attention to. It feels like I am starting downswing by dropping my arms as well.

Left knee down and forward. Left knee bump. Hip bump. Tailbone pushes forward and up towards target.

There are a lot of feelings, but the downswing starts from the ground up - feet, knees, hips...

Hmmm, that's something I haven't thought about first. I've always focused on the hips turning. The knees will of course follow, but maybe focusing on the left knee is better.

I like to think about pushing the hips and weight forward like iacas said. As for the hands, I just like to feel like gravity is dropping them down. Your forward hip turn will get your swing on plane as your hands and arms "drop into the downswing."

    • Day 305 - Grip and backswing work. Full swings were bothering the hip a bit.
    • Day 56 - 2024-11-15 Light day. Lots of catch-up work. Checked the grip to make sure I wasn't compensating there, and did a little backswing work.
    • Day 197 (15 Nov 24) - Played in the Friday men’s group outing - blustery conditions in play (wind gusting 10-20; spotty pop up misting rain; temps in the mid 50’s), so it was a good day to work on course management.  Solid round of 83 (41/42) - 7 GIR, total 32 putts - included 10 pars (3 being up and downs), a dbl and triple bogie.
    • Have been on a mid to low 80’s roll of late - today was no different with an 83 (41 front / 42 back).   Played in the Friday men’s group outing - blustery conditions in play (wind gusting 10-20; spotty pop up misting rain; temps in the mid 50’s), so it was a good day to work on course management, delivering 7 GIR, total 32 putts - included 10 pars (3 being up and downs), a dbl and triple bogie.  Local course starting to get that winter feel - wet areas wetter, thin grass thinner, greens  trickier.
