  1. 1. Walking VS RIDING

    • Walking can add 5+ strokes
      1
    • Walking can add 0-5 strokes
      11
    • NO DIFFERENCE
      15
    • Walking will reduce the number of strokes 0-5
      28
    • Walking will reduce strokes +5
      1
    • Walking only affects those who are common cart riders

well, isn't that the point? the reason why the pga tour nor the usga allow the usage of carts is because fatigue is supposed to play a factor in your game. that's why more golfers are getting fit.

which stands to reason that our scores would be lower on average. imo

what would the pga players score if they had carts? new poll in tour talk no proof to the matter, just theory

I think you have to narrow down the parameters a bit. When I walk on a relatively flat course with a moderate temperature I play MUCH better. It slows me down, gives me more time to think about my next shot (or beat myself up over my last one) and really focus in on my game. When I ride I feel like I'm rushing from shot to shot.

Now, a really hilly course in 90+ degree temperatures and my score is definitely going to be affected adversely.

I have trouble carrying my bag. No matter how good shape I am in (i'm in quite good shape), the carrying my bag tends to cause my hands to swell, which makes me loose a lot of my feel late in the round. I can run 5 miles without too much exhaustion, but a round of golf leaves my hands feeling weird and messes up my swing.

My hands have never swelled when doing physical activity. I don't have carpal-tunnel, but it seems weird that you can run 5 miles and your hands don't swell.

I played 45 on monday and I walked and carried the whole way. I have a light bag, but walking like 12+ miles gets to you. I actually played better as the rounds went on. I don't see too much fatigue for me in one round, but walking 36 gets me tired. I don't think I lose shots when I only walk 18, but probably when I go 36 (or caddie in the mornings). I don't like to ride at all unless it's super hot or I'm super tired. I think I play worse when I ride because I can't stay in a rhythm.

I think walking helps build the mental toughness you need to play the game. You're fighting fatigue and trying to stay sharp.

I think it really depends on the individual, I like to walk, it seems to put me more at peace and I tend to play better that way. But I will say, when we get the 98 degree temperatures and 75 percent humdity days here in July and August, riding is an advantage.

i definately play much better when walking...
i used to carry the whole time usually in the early spring or late fall...
but in the hot summer months a caddy is definately worth it... specially the ones with wheels... you dont have to tip the ones with wheels...
i hear bitching and moaning about walkers on a busy course but id rather walk to my ball... than to ride really fast and end up sitting for 5 mins waiting for the green/fw to clear...
ive walked super slow and still had to wait to take a shot... id be way more upset having to sit in a cart stink eyeing the group in front forever...
plus i think i have a mental advantage walking... i have to pick my shots carefully or ill take a long(or very short) walk of shame

I don't think that you'll see a difference in your score whether you walk or ride.
But walking in 90+ degree heat on a hilly course, and having to carry your water bottles in addition to your golf gear, will get old real fast!

The pros aren't allowed to ride during tournaments, so whoever made the rules must think that it offers some advantage.

No problem, that's when it's time to drink a nice cold beverage and apply more sunscreen.

Walking with a pull/push cart is much easier than carrying ones clubs and I don't think that was factored into the poll.

I've been playing for a couple of years now and always rode a cart. Today I walked my first course at a 9-hole muny. I actually enjoyed it more than the cart. When I ride a cart I end up going too fast. Walking slowed me down and gave me time to really think about my shot before I got up to my ball. I'll have to try walking an 18 hole and see how much different is it. But, I did play better today than I have in a while. Not sure if that was from walking or not.

During school season with the team, we have to walk. On my own, I ride my golf cart. Mainly because I don't want a group behind me to wait.

If you are at school and you are not walking all the time, I think that is outrageous. And don't be fooled into thinking that carts make golf faster. Also, if you are on a school "team" and you are worried about making people behind you wait, what does that say about the team?

In the race of life, always back self-interest. At least you know it's trying.

I'm just saying, we have to. With that said, I like walking the course.

And our home course doesn't mind when the team goes out walking. We do in fact hold up groups, so we let a couple or individual pass by whenever needed.

    • So here’s the thing, you’ve treated the bunker as if it were GUR, which would actually be the appropriate course of action except you and your playing partners are not authorized to determine that for yourselves. The Committee in this case would be the golf course and in an ideal world, they would have handled their responsibilities and told you at the beginning of the round that X bunkers are under water, treat them as GUR. I’m actually ok with how you handled the situation in a casual round TBH but this is the rules forum and you asked about a rules clarification so there’s a specific procedure for that. As for your proposed rule, I don’t agree with the logic at all for the reason I outlined in my previous post. You are trading a bunker lie for a lie in grass for no penalty. And also, there are already rules in place that address the exact situation you found yourself in, including relief options for if the bunker was appropriately marked as GUR or not.
    • Someone asked would pros accept someone else keeping score. It’s done in every other sport. That’s what scorekeepers are for. It’s an antiquated rule. It’s fine for non-professionals.  I feel like there is a lot of resistance to rule in golf, as if these rules were brought down on stone tablets by Moses.
    • Y'all can appoint a few good men from your own league that have proper understanding of the rules or at least access the USGA rules (book, online, etc.) when necessary. They don't have to have some kind of official certification or blessings from any outside org/entity to my knowledge.  Yes, y'all could have collectively declared it GUR under F-16 as @DaveP043 posted as the self appointed committee and you would have been fine to drop outside of this particular bunker. Remember to not declare all bunkers as GUR on a wholesale basis. It is case by case only.  Now you might say 'who's got time for all that' (going around which bunkers should be declared GUR) then I can somewhat understand  your pain but at the same time you cannot fault the tedium of rules  enforcement as a general reason to declare them 'lacking in common sense'.
    • Its simple, YOU are responsible for reporting YOUR score correctly, at every level of golf.  Do you imagine a top pro would really trust anyone else with his score? Without getting too far from the original post, the Rules have been revised every 4 years for decades.  They're continually evaluated, and most changes are in response to changes within the game.  BTW, if wind blows your ball off the green before you've lifted and replaced it, you play from wherever it ends up.  The TV call ins weren't a rule of golf issue, they were a PGA Tour issue, all in an effort to get the call right.
    • Someone asked what I propose. I think if the bunker is full of rainwater, you get to drop it with no penalty directly in back of the bunker, so you still have a tricky shot of chipping over the bunker. People are talking about local committees and such which we just don’t have at our level. My league and playing partners gave the free drop with no issue. My original purpose of this post was just to understand what the “real” rule is, and I now know. But now I also want to encourage people to see that many long time golf rules are outdated and illogical, and hopefully encourage people to push for change. They made some changes in the last few years, so I’m hopeful the game I love will improve if enough people speak out. A lot to hope for posting in a little forum I know, but you have to start somewhere.
