if there were zero restrictions on golf club construction (let's assume golf balls are regulated as they are now) how much easier could the game of golf be made? significantly? not much? is the golf club the ideal tool for getting a golf ball to a green (assuming lifting a ball is not allowed)?

no it can be much easier, imagine 600 c.c drivers, somone could invent a golf ball laucher.so yes i think it could be much much easier.

Well just look at how clubs were made a few years ago, fairway woods and driver were made of wood, then steel club heads and then titanium, irons are much more advanced and easier to hit now with the invention of hybrid clubs as well. Yeah you could make the driver bigger and go farther, but you still have to hit the ball on the green and putt to get a good score. A driver that goes further might not be helpful to someone who doesnt hit the ball accurately, just further offline. For pros, yes it would make it easier but they would simply make courses longer as they have done in the past, 380 yards used to be a long par 4 for pros, now they are routinely 500 yards or more and they still have little trouble reaching them easily, thats a par 5 for me. This probably is the best time for a beginner to start playing as the clubs are more forgiving and the balls go farther than ever before.

how much regulation do you think is going into limiting forgiveness?

Think if composite materials technology were applied to drivers. If softballs–which much softer in comparison to golf balls–fly off composite bats at 100+ MPH, I'm sure a composite driver could hit a golf ball an awful long way.

I guess you could finally make club heads too big for irons and it would feel like swinging a shovel, forgiveness is pretty hard to measure, its still not easy to hit a target some 150+ yards away with an iron and get it really close no matter how accurate it is every time, even pros routinely are 20 or more feet away on approach shots.

I would imagine if we can put a man on the moon we can also invent golf balls and clubs that would carry the ball to greater distances! The problem is distance is only part of the equation to producing great golf. Touch around the greens and putting are just as big a factor if not more than distance!

When I first starting playing in 1975, the average golfer drove the ball about 200 yards, today I see the average players hitting it around 230 yards. A nice gain of at least 30 yards yet I think the average golfer shoots even worse today than they did back then!

My opinion, technology is great and can make the game more fun, but it will not produce great golf on it's own!!!!!

he asked is a club the easiest way to get the ball on the green, and it would be easier if someone made a golf ball rifle.

i also said you couldnt touch the ball....

you wouldnt have to pick it up.

alrighty...if you insist i be more specific: a tool, solely powered by the human body, consisting of no moving parts, designed to propel a ball forward from a position at rest.
