I have a question. I hit my 9 iron 165, don't know about PW, because it broke, but probably just a bit more than 150. I hit my 60 at 100 yards, and 52 at 130. What shaft would be recommended for me, and would blades be a good option? I shoot in the 80's but I'm very capable of scratch, as i've done so before. I'm serious about my game, so i would learn to like the clubs. Please help. thanks

My suggestion: don't swing out of your shoes so much.

Also, whether or not to hit blades isn't based on distance, it's based on what you want out of the club. There are plenty of guys on the PGA Tour who don't use blades, and plenty of guys not on the tour who do use them. And there are plenty of players on the LPGA Tour who use what we would call game-improvement irons, even though they're clearly better than some of us who use players' irons! Now, if the 9-iron at 165 is a smooth, comfortable, 80% swing, you're probably looking at something like X100s for iron shafts.

it's my 100 percent swing, but not the 100 percent that maked me feel over. It is a smooth swing. At 80 percent i get a 150 with 9 iron. which in fact, i'm about to slow all my speeds down so i can have more control.

If you're nine iron is going 165 you should get Xtra-stiff shafts. That's a long hit. I only hit mine 125. haha...

But, you could get blades if you want to. It wouldn't necessarily hurt your game, but there may not be much advantage to it. I'd say maybe look into the MP57's or, MP62's, something along those lines....

good luck.

Yes.

No, wait, I meant no. Errr, make that yes. Look, we can't say. It depends on your swing, what ballflight you like, and what you like to feel.

Find a fitter or store near you that allows you to mix and match shafts and heads.

That said, Golfsmith now carries the Titleist fitting system where you can take an individual head, say an AP2, and screw in multiple shafts. At the very least you'll be able to try the Project X and Dynamic Gold. Not 100% sure if they offer KBS. Try that and compare feel and results on a launch monitor.

IMHO, if you could do this without looking at the shaft brand, (some people are particularly brand loyal as opposed to performance) all the better.

I play the Nike VR split Backs with Dynamic Golg X100. It is a extra stiff shaft and I only hit my 9 iron 145. With regular shafts I was hitting a 9 iron 150. I lost 5 yards but I gained more control going to extra stiff shafts. The Nike VR split backs are the best of both worlds. Workable yet forgivable. They only have a very small cavity in them.

i dont care about ball flight, i want control.

Ball flight and control are not mutually exclusive subjects, more to it than just not "maked you feel over", as you put it, though I'm not really getting that.

Just because you say you hit a 9 iron 165 doesn't tell anyone much, maybe it's rolling 40 yards, maybe it's 165 every 5th big swing and pulled left and over the green 20 yards. Take the advice offered and get fit or find a place to sample some different shafts. Assuming your 80% 150 yard 9 iron is what you would hit from 150 to the green (and I believe that's what you are saying), and it's as accurate as your swing allows, I see no reason for you to go to an X.

By the way, I can hit a 9 iron 165 yards to with a low ball flight. There is no way in the world you are hitting a 9 iron 165 yards with the proper ball flight. Maybe down hill with a 20 mph wind at your back.

What is your swing speed?

well, being a lefty, i really cant try clubs, no one has any.

I'm a lefty and when I was shopping for my new clubs I picked out 4 different kinds and told the sales manager I was not spending 900$ on a set of irons without hitting them. He called the reps and they dropped of my left handed 6 irons to hit.

How about I hit my 9 iron 165 with no wind, and straight as a string. But that was when i was purposefully pulling it, and it had correct ball flight, i just dont like to hit the ball like that. I can hit it very comfortably 150 though. I know it makes a difference, and i live about 3000 ft. above sea level with no humidity.

IMO slow your swing down and get some PX6.0 or X100. I bet you will hit the ball with more of a consistant ball flight and probably improve your iron play. Im sure its possible to be hitting it like you say you are but I just find it hard to imagine you being a 10 and having iron play like you are talking about. Now maybe your not strong from the tee box or on the green. If thats the case then work on those parts of your game. Im not trying to be rude im just giving my opinion bro. I forgot to say look for something that is a players iron, why play blades when you don't have to.

like everyone here has said. PX6.0 or TT X100. I actually play both in different clubs if you check my sig. I feel the Rifles are more stable. I prefer the feel of the rifle shafts.

What is "proper ballflight?" Is it the way Geoff Ogilvy hits it or is it the way Camilo Villegas hits it? Is it the way Tiger Woods hits it or is it the way Boo Weekley hits it?

I ask because not one of those guys hits the ball with the same ballflight as the other yet all four can stripe their 9 irons 165 yards. Again, just interested in what exactly is "proper ballflight?"
