I agree that Red Sox-Yanks is the best rivalry in sports. It has been especially great the last several years!

You have to give it up to Michigan vs. Ohio State. That rivalry has been going on for ever. There was a show on HBO about it that was pretty good. One of the team's bus (I forget which one) ran out of gas because the coach refused to buy gas in the rivals state.....

Redskins vs. Cowboys, Back in the 80's 90's it was pretty big. and I'm a redskins fan, but when the NFC East dominated football these teams went back and forth.

Sorry I don't know anything about American sports but from a European perspective:

1. Manchester United v Liverpool - Outright hatrid mixed with spectacular football and historic tradition.

2. England v Germany (Soccer NOT World Wars!)

3. England v Australia (Cricket) -Colonial resentment coupled with the only game that rivals golf for sportsmanship.

4. Joe Fraser v Ali - It really was personal not like the pseudo rivalries that boxing manufactures today.

5. Barcelona v Real Madrid - "El Classico" gets quite heated: Franco's dictatorship imprisoned those who dared to speak Catalonian, plundered other Spanish clubs to give the best players to Madrid and was all round pretty nasty. When Figo moved from Barca to Madrid he was pelted with severed pigs heads!

Yes I am extremely biased, but I vote Michigan-Ohio St. football. I do have my reasons though...

First, it is only played once a year. Beacause of that, there is always interest in the game. Yankees-Red Sox play 20-25 times?, Duke-Carolina basketball play at least twice, maybe more if you play in the ACC tourn, or the NCAA tourn. If the Yankees and Red Sox were 4 and 5 in the standings, would anyone really care? My Saturday before Thanksgiving is planned around this game (typically noon eastern on ABC). If you missed the Yankees-Red Sox game last night, don't worry, they play again tonight and then play three more next weekend too.

Second, that one game almost always means something big. Whether it is a Big 10 title, BCS berth, National title, etc., one of the teams usually has something on the line. A regular season game in May between Yankees-Red Sox means almost nothing. Over the season maybe, but that one game doesn't mean much. Same with Duke-Carolina. Sometimes it might mean a #1 seed or an ACC regular season title. Neither of them are win or go home like in college football.

Third, the amount of people with interest in Michigan-Ohio St. football is greater than both on a national scale. It is always on national network TV. There are 100,000+ in the stands. Many times there would be more it the already large stadiums held more. I went to the game in 2003 and there were 112,118 (largest crowd ever) at The Big House for a game that meant a Big 10 title and a trip to the Rose Bowl between two top-5 teams. A few years after, in 2006 it was #1 and #2 and everything was on the line. That game could have sold 150,000 tickets if their was room. Would Yankees-Red Sox or Duke-Carolina get 100,000 for a regular season game, even if it meant everything? Unlikely. Even the games that don't mean much between UM-OSU have the same interest.

All the others that have been mentioned (thanks for the Euro input powerfader) or will be mentioned are probably great rivalrys, but this is why I think Michigan-Ohio St. is best. GO BLUE!!

I will judge my rounds much more by the quality of my best shots than the acceptability of my worse ones.

Anyone saying any US sports is again woefully out of touch.

Some South American football derbies are up there. Galatasary v Fenerbahce in Turkey. Rangers v Celtic in Scotland. Man Utd v Liverpool in England as mentioned. The Warsaw derby in Poland. Virtually every big derby in Eastern Europe...

All of those make any sporting rivalry in the US look like childsplay.

Michigan vs. Ohio State...aka The Game! I am biased, but there is nothing like it. Go to one of the games and you will understand.
