In recently videotaped myself and i noticed that I don't create very good lag. My wrist are releasing way to early in my downswing with my irons. I was hoping that someone had some good drills to help create lag. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Lay your golf bag down about 3 feet behind your club head at address.

If you let go of the club early you will whack the crap out of your bag.


Another is to place another ball 6 inches behind (and slightly closer to you) the ball you are trying to hit. You have to swing over that ball to hit your ball.

This makes you release the club later as well.

Do you come over top of the ball? or pull/slice it? If you swing from the inside and release early you're going to hit the ground way before the ball unless you raise up.

A Good swing and lag kinda comes with it. Not something I've ever been worried about

Swing a power swing fan and that will give you the feeling of what lag feels like. I used one of these in a lesson and loved it. I am going to order one as soon as I get a chance.

I don't slice or come over the top. I know i do come over the top ocassionally but not too often. I think i use to create some good lag before i broke my wrist so i'm still trying to get everything back into working order.

I remember reading an article where it says you should practice hitting punch shots to hold your lag better.

The acceleration of the clubhead is everything. It is responsible for all things good in the swing. The real goal is to sustain acceleration and therefore the line of compression through the ball. You sense the presence or lack of acceleration through 'lag pressure' on the middle joint of the right index finger. It's like being in a car you can feel acceleration as it presses you back into the seat. The trick is to start the swing slowly and build acceleration NEVER letting it slow or stop until well after impact. A slowing of acceleration destroys your swing. I maintain and even boost acceleration by keeping my left shoulder tight with the armpit before and well past impact causing the clubhead to go left instead of down the line. You know you have done it correctly when your hips are 30 degrees open at impact just like most pros.

Late acceleration is an important part of the swing. Imagine kicking a football or throwing a baseball. If you swing or kick as hard as you can from the top of the "backswing", you won't be able to accelerate when the arm or foot has passed the body and is supposed to whip the ball. By using too much motion from the top of the backswing, it's impossible to accelerate when you should, which is through the ball.

Try this for practice: From the top of the backswing, start the motion with the weight transfer and turning of hips. Let the arms drop because of the hips pulling, don't force the arms down. When the hands reach your waist, you can speed them up to accelerate through the ball. Don't do any quick movement from the top. The clubhead is supposed to gain speed from the hips, not the top. The reason for turning that far is to gain leverage, not speed, though they are related. You can't possibly rush the arms from the top and keep accelerating through the ball. Our body is very quick and doesn't need a lot of space to gain top speed on the limbs. At the top you gain leverage, then the arms drop to the waist and from there you can accelerate and pick up speed to hit the ball.

It would've been interesting to see diagrams of the clubhead speed when someone is testing this. I'm sure you'd notice that the harder you try to swing and more force coming from the top of the backswing, the lower the speed will be. If you don't rush from the top, but speed up later in the swing, the clubhead will move much faster.

What has this got to do with lag? When you throw the arms down, the wrists will also start releasing. The longer you keep from speeding up, the easier it is to hold the lag.

    • Day 121: did a bit of mirror work with my driver. Working on shortening the backswing.
    • Day 305 - Grip and backswing work. Full swings were bothering the hip a bit. 
    • Day 56 - 2024-11-15 Light day. Lots of catch-up work. Checked the grip to make sure I wasn't compensating there, and did a little backswing work.
    • Day 197 (15 Nov 24) - Played in the Friday men’s group outing - blustery conditions in play (wind gusting 10-20; spotty pop up misting rain; temps in the mid 50’s), so it was a good day to work on course management.  Solid round of 83 (41/42) - 7 GIR, total 32 putts - included 10 pars (3 being up and downs), a dbl and triple bogie.  
    • Have been on a mid to low 80’s roll of late - today was no different with an 83 (41 front / 42 back).   Played in the Friday men’s group outing - blustery conditions in play (wind gusting 10-20; spotty pop up misting rain; temps in the mid 50’s), so it was a good day to work on course management, delivering 7 GIR, total 32 putts - included 10 pars (3 being up and downs), a dbl and triple bogie.  Local course starting to get that winter feel - wet areas wetter, thin grass thinner, greens  trickier.
