I got a bonus last week at work and its burning a hole in my pocket haha. So i decided to get a golf GPS. Dont wanna spend alot under $300 if possible. Any suggestions? I was looking at the Golf Logix from garmin and it looks simple.

I have a Garmin and it works pretty well for me. I really like the simplicity as it updates automatically and with a push of a button gives yardages to certain features like water, bunkers, and provides yardages to lay-up points. (example, 178 yards to 100 lay-up). I use it more for 160+ yards out or whenever I find myself "off the grid" on a hole. The "distance of last shot" is handy too. I find I use a laser finder more inside 150 as the exact yardage becomes more important but I am satisfied with the Garmin GPS.

My buddy has a golflogix and he loves it. I've also heard great things about the neo if you are just looking for basic yardages.

had a neo, was neat
honestly though.....i sold it cause i lost my "feel"

i was relying on the GPS more than feel...looked at it too much - even from 40 yds out! haha!

got rid of it and have posted some of my lowest scores of the season
most of the courses here are marked enough to walk out the yardages

i like to be able to feel out a shot from 80yds in, rather than know it......does that make sense?

I know what ur saying about feeling a shot and i probably wont use it for anything under 100 yards anyways.

I just ordered the Garmin Golflogix GPS. I got it for $205 so thats not bad at all.

I have the Neo and really have benefited from having it. Most courses have custom markers entered that will show yardages to bunkers, water, distances to carry hazards, etc. I also like that you don't have to get an annual subscription; it is just $35 to get 100 credits and those credits are good for any course you want to download. Once the course is on your computer it is saved and accessible. I just was looking for a GPS to give me front, center, and back yardages. So far I have been really pleased.

Edit to Add: I paid $120 off eBay on a Best Offer deal for a new one.

I know it's been said before but I would get a laser rangefinder - I was on the fence for a year on whether to get a rangefinder or a GPS and read a lot of reviews on the Sand Trap and went with a rangefinder. I love it - it's awesome. Always available and exact distances to the pin.

I just switched from rangefinder to GPS. Thought the rangefinder was a pain to use, especially when it was really calm and the flag was limp. What I'm saying is, to each his own.

I will say my locally owned golf shop has a great deal. You can demo a rangefinder (Bushnell V2) or a GPS (SkyCaddie) for 2 days for $20 each. The $20 (or $40 if you demo both) is then credited back to you for the purchase of whatever you choose. Pretty easy way to make up your mind.

I own a SkyCaddie and love it. Yes, there is an annual subscription, but you have access to literally every course, from goat ranch to resort. The biggest advantage with the SkyCaddie is the feature that lets you get yardage to a specific point on each green. If you play courses with larger greens like I do, that can be a huge difference in distance. My SkyCaddie is the SG2 model, so it is several years old, but is also more affordable than the newer models with the SAME functions. Just no color screen. Highly recommend it.

Skycaddie isn't a bad option if you stay away from the SG3 and SG4 models. The igolf Neo isn't bad if they've got your courses mapped. Skycaddie seems to have the most courses, of all the reliable options. If you're wanting to spend a little more cash, the uPro is really cool, but it's $300 plus tax, and then costs quite a bit to get the pro mode courses. They don't seem to have a ton of courses mapped in the pro mode either. Definitely, whatever you decide, check to see which company has the most local courses mapped. There's nothing more frustrating than having a working GPS sitting at home because the course isn't mapped. That's why the skycaddie is such a good option. The annual fees are no big deal, really. $30/year is less than one green/cart fee at most places.

I'm new to golf, but an early adopter when it comes to tech. However, my wife bought me a Golf Buddy for my birthday and it works great. I don't have to pay anything for updates and it tell me the yardage, which is all I need to know. I mean why do I need a high res full color image of the course when I'm looking at it? It has free updates and has had every course that I've played - for free. It has helped me improve my scores and know how much I'm missing by, lol.

Do you guys know if the SG2 will work on a Mac? Im looking at buying a used one, but I dont know if it works on a Mac. I called up and the guy I talked to had no idea..... Kinda weird, you'd think the guy that works for Sky Caddie would know something like that.

    • Going to Florida for the usual February golf trip, and with our current weather, that date won't get here soon enough. Heading to Augusta GA for the Tuesday Master's practice round, will definitely get some golf in while I'm in the area for a few days. Hope to be able to catch up with @coachjimsc if he's around. Then it's back to Scotland first of July.  Playing 7 new courses, can't wait for that.  Then somewhere after that is the Rhode Island CC Member-Guest and then my normal October golf trip to Myrtle Beach.
    • It sucks to carry around a lot of water, but ideally it should be way more than we think.  I buy those gallon jugs of water and hang them from my pushcart when I walk. I agree with the electrolytes as well. You don't just sweat out water, but you lose electrolytes as well.
    • A 2010 study from the Journal of Strength & Conditioning Research compares the effects of different pre-round stretch routines for competitive golfers. Active Dynamic Warm-up: Swing Medicus driver, hit 3 shots each with selected clubs. Passive Static Stretches: Various athletic stretches such as hamstrings, chest stretch and reverse trunk twist. The subjects were collegiate golfers with a HDCP index of 5 or less who engaged regularly in strength and fitness routines. All golfers had two test days: one with active dynamic (AD) warmup, a second with AD followed by static stretches (SS). The results were then compared, within golfers and across golfers. For performance testing after the warmups, golfers hit three driver shots at time 0, 15, 30 and 45 minutes after the warmup. The study shows that static stretch formats produced poorer performance outcomes in the four measures shown in Table 5, which shows Time Zero results. The performance deficits under the PSS protocol decreased over time. Some suggestions on why the passive protocol was tied to lower performance than the active protocol: The passive stretches routine induced excessive range of motion,  basically producing wobbles in the golf swing. Other research indicates that the stretching produced slack in the tendons, lessening the amount of muscle force that could be transferred into the shot. One caveat: The study had good scientific controls and balancing of treatments (test routines). This was, however, an exploratory study and raises as many questions as it answers. Also, although the study was done back in 2010, it is still cited as a primary work in recent reviews. A quick online search did not reveal any follow-ups on the study. For those interested, the study PDF is below. PassiveStretchGOLF.pdf
    • I have trouble with vertigo on occasion, but have gotten nutritional and biofeedback tips to keep it at bay. Dehydration can help trigger v-like symptoms so one recommendation, along with maintaining overall hydration, is to start with 8 oz. of water early in the morning. A meta-analysis on Golf As Physical Activity indicated that golf is rated as a moderately intensive physical activity. This scientific literature review came from the University of Edinburgh. The physical activity level ties into hydration. A former university colleague was a marathon runner who had published a couple of articles on endurance training. He likewise said that golf was a moderate physical activity especially when the round stretched past  the two-hour mark. For hydration he recommended switching from water to electrolyte drink on the back nine (past two hour point of exercise) to prevent cramping. At the two-hour point of moderate activity, water starts flushing electrolytes out of the body, which can lead to fatigue and cramping. (I have had trouble with leg cramps in the past during exertion.) During a round, I start out with water on the front nine and switch to sports drink on the back nine. If the day is unusually hot, I may drink 8 oz. of Pedialite concentrate before going to the course. Maintaining overall hydration plus on-course boosters keeps me going.
    • Personally I’d try booking direct first - either via the Vidanta golf reservations number/email or through the resort concierge - especially for Christmas/New Year. Vidanta’s main courses (Greg Norman and Nicklaus designs) are popular and can book out fast this time of year, so direct often gives you the best shot at your preferred tee times.
