Had my driver regripped with a Golf Pride New Decade grip. The guy asked if I wanted it put on pro style (logo underneath) and I said yes, without really thinking.
Got home and realised that the pattern on the grip really doesn't encourage this due to the top section that goes down where your thumb is (which isn't there when it's done back to front).
Spent ages searching to see if this is a no-no and found a reference to DLIII doing it, but couldn't confirm it. Felt like a bit of an idiot becuase they are clearly designed to be lined up a certain way.
Had that sick feeling you get when you think you've done something stupid.

Anyway, tried to forget about it and then a week later I'm watching the golf on TV, and the orange and black grip like mine caught my eye. It was Jeff Sluman's young daughter having a swing while he was practising. Plain as day, logo underneath and pattern reversed.
If it's good enough for him, it's good enough for me.
But...I won't do it again.

What's the point? Just to not see the words "Golf Pride" or whatever brand the grip is from?

"Pro" style would be installed facing like the ones on the left, "Regular" style on the right. Same grip, just put on the shaft facing the opposite way.

Ahhh, I see what you guys mean. Thanks for the picture.

I have always had my grips put on like the ones on the RIGHT...not sure why you'd want the 'GOLF PRIDE' facing the other way.

So you don't see "Golf Pride" while you are looking down at the ball.

If I put my grips on "pro-style," how many strokes will that shave from my average round?

Oh, definitely 6-8, easy.

Actually, I use the letters to align the grips when I put them on. I line the word up to the face angle that I like with each club, so it lets my hands find that same angle easier each time.

Who even looks at their grips when they address the ball or looking down at it? I mean, seriously?

This is just speculation, and I have no basis for this, my guess would be that pro's do this because if they are not getting paid anything from Golf Pride, Lampkin, Winn, etc., they don't want to have the brand name show up on TV or in photos. Tiger probably likes the size and shape of the Ping grip he uses, but he doesn't want to promote Ping, and can't turn it around backward, so they black it out. Now you can buy that grip with it blacked out already.

I will judge my rounds much more by the quality of my best shots than the acceptability of my worse ones.

It's the other way round.

Sharpros are the original ones. Golf Pride have to pay Sharpro to use the Sharpro design for the new Decade grips.

I just read in

golf ( in ) digest ( ion ) that they tested 5 average golfers and found that with the grips on backwards they shaved 4-6 strokes off their game and they recommend that you go for a grip directional fitting immediately. The average price of this is between $300 and $450 depending on how extensive you want the testing to be.

In my bag:

Titleist 910F w/ Diamana Kaali' Stiff

True to a certain extent. I would say 3-4, though. Directional fitting will depend on the state you are in and the mean temperature and involves issues like the time you normally play and how much your hands sweat.

You will only gain the 4-6 strokes if you have had the grips spined and durometer tested. The guy at the golf shop thought I was crazy when I went through seven boxes of new grips to find the (only) one that had a consistent density in the corded section. N.B. Directional fitting is not recommended those who prefer ribbed grips, obviously, but it is the only guaranteed method of permanently eliminating a slice. That is why it is essential for driver grips, and not as important for irons.
