I don't know if this is a familiar trend or anything to anyone here, but my scores seem to go up and down, varying usually by up to 10 strokes. Here are my rounds so far this summer.

All on the same course? If not, then the differentials normalized by the course handicap (based on your handicap index) would be a better indicator of consistency.

I like to keep stats of my rounds: strokes & putts per hole, fairways hit, sand shots, etc. Then I can concentrate on my weaknesses instead of continuously working on my strengths.

Anyone who shoots in the mid 90's to 100's are very very inconsistent, which is why they shoot those numbers in general....so your scores don't really indicate anything to me besides the fact that you are capable of shooting in the low 90's but also have your fair share of bad rounds.

So if my math is correct you've got a +/- of 16? That seems pretty solid for someone of your skill level. But as someone else mentioned, you might want to keep track of your stats. For instance, when my drive hits the fairway i put an "F" in the top left corner of the score for that hole, if I hit a GIR then I write a "G" in the top right. And if i miss the fairway or don't get a GIR I write something to tell me where my miss was.. whether it was left, right, short, long, slice, hook, whatever. It really helps me to track where my mistakes were and to work on them :).

Also, my scores so far this summer have ranged anywhere from 71 to 83 on courses of similar difficulty.
Once in a while everyone has a "high round" no matter what their handicap or skill level is.

Last 5 rounds or so I have marked putts, fairways/greens (on par 3s), and hazards on my score card. I can post those as well... and yes, these scores are from the same course.

haha those scores are pretty much identical to how I'm shooting at the moment. I have still yet to shoot in the 80s though.

I just think it says that we are very inconsistent. We can go out and play some great shots, strike the ball well and shoot in the 80s, but we can also have the occasional "what the hell is going on" round where nothing seems to work. I think we just need to play more and we'll get more consistent over time.

Orange, it seems like your main problem (like most high handicappers) is having several double bogeys/others throughout your round. The rounds that stick out most to me are these 2.

June 30th @ Highland Woods - 93
July 22nd @ Highland Woods - 87

The June 30th round you hit 1 birdie and 5 pars. that means that for 6 holes you were 1 under par... that also indicates that for the other 12 holes you were 21 over par which means you averaged +1.75 or almost a double bogey.

On July 22nd you shot an 87 with 7 pars. so for 11 holes you were 15 over par which is only +1.36 which is pretty good :)

I think you should just focus on reducing the number of doubles/triples/others on your scorecard by maybe being a bit more conservative on longer/harder shots.

I calculate your handicap as 19.2 but your scores are starting to trend higher using a best fit curve. Don't know your other stats but like most of us, the short game can always use more work :)

I think you are improving. Harvey says a golfer lowers his scores in blocks and I totally believe him. You will have a swing breakthrough at some point which will reduce how badly you miss. Then you will be amazed when you are looking at an 81 on your scorecard for the first time! But you will also be hooked on the game for life. Your swing will haunt your thoughts, you will spend more time playing, and your wife/gf will hate you...so know what you are getting into, padawan...

And consistency is probably one of the hardest things to learn in golf. Ive been playing since my pre-teens and I still don't feel I have a finished polished swing. The swing is always a work in progress for me.

I don't know if it's against the rules to suggest using some resources to track your stats besides Scorecard; however, I use oobgolf to track all of my rounds. The free version lets you track strokes, putts, fairways hit, club used off of tee, GIRS, sand shots and penalties. I really like it; if you want to see what it's like, here's mine .

It's not. It's just against the rules to use the "My Scorecards" button to link to oobgolf scores.

Your well on your way, to hit in the 80's on a 6700 yard course is truly impressive! Congrats on that!

I shoot between 90-92 every week on my usual course which is 5000 yards from the whites and my HC is like 25! Gotta start playing longer courses to bring the HC down I think.

Your doing great man, whatever your doing keep it up, and like all of us work on, dont turn a bad shot into a bad hole!

You'd get more information if you kept track of various stats. Download the trial of Scorecard and follow his instructions of what to keep track of in a round. It takes two extra seconds to write down a few things, but it can tell you tons about your game.

FIR: Fairways in Regulation: Basically did your tee shot stay in or go OB. I also put a little arrow with a direction so I know if I'm always slicing it right etc. I also write W for water or OB for out of bounds so that I know the amount of penalty strokes I had.

GIR: Greens in Regulation: This means you made it on the green with a chance at birdie with your putt. If you have a high number of these but are still making double and triple bogey then your putting is the problem.

U/D: Up and Downs: This is tough to gauge but I basically mark a check if chipped on the green and then sank my putt. I put an S if I was in the sand. X means I either didn't get out of the obstacle the first time or I two putted afterwards. Either way, I know I need to work on the short stuff around the green.

Without these sort of things, score tells you nothing. You could be a scratch golfer that blew up on one hole and knocked a ball in the water 5 times. That also reminds me that score means nothing if you don't keep track of it properly. If you take a drop where you lost your ball in the rough but don't count it as a penalty, it's not accurate.

I play from the blues.

This could be a factor. Where do you lose most of your strokes? Playing a 6700 yard course with a number of 400+ yard par 4s is difficult for most golfers. It's hard to tell, but this course looks like it's fairly tight. Are you losing strokes off the tee (i.e. hitting it in rough or hazards)? Are you struggling to hit greens in regulation? If either is the case (or both), then I hate to say it, but you should probably move up to the whites. Then you could benefit from trying to hit a club you feel more comfortable with off the tee, like a 3 iron, rather than driver all the time.

In my experience, golfers who are stuck in the 90-100 range suffer from any or all of these problems. 1) Not practicing or not knowing what to practice. Example: I see so many golfers hit driver only on the range, then take 5 or 6 practice putts, and say, "I'm ready!" It makes absolutely no sense to practice the most with the club you typically hit the least on the course (driver), and conversely practicing the least with the club you hit the most (putter). 2) Instead of fixing a problem with your swing, compensating for it by taking the easy way out. Example: Someone who slices the ball all the time just aims way left instead of working to figure out why they slice and fixing it. 3) Not employing strategy on the course. Example: hitting the ball behind a tree, completely blocking your path to the green. The smart play is to chip the ball safely back toward the fairway (even if you have to go backwards) and continue on. At this point, you're playing for bogey, but doing your best to avoid anything worse. What I see too often is the golfer hits the same shot they would if they were in the middle of the fairway. The ball hits the tree, goes somewhere crazy, and now they've gone from a likely bogey to some big number.

After reading through posts on this board, this is actually against the rules. When losing a ball you have to hit your next shot from the place you lost the previous ball.
