Just watched it on the DVR. Felt bad for Padraig. He missed a ton of putts by inches. Yes, his fate was sealed on 16. He hit five bad shots in a row that hole. However, Tiger won the tournament on the front nine. He eagled the second hole putting the pressure on early.

Thx for that article. It answered my earlier question about the possible consequences after being put on the clock:

When players take more than the allotted time while on the clock — 40 seconds, with an additional 20 seconds for the first player to hit each of the shots toward the green — they are given a warning. A second bad time leads to a $5,000 fine and a one-shot penalty

Yeah, and not to take anything away from Tiger, but downhill, downwind, on a PGA Tour firm fairway, and yeah, the ball will go pretty far.

The 181-yard 8-iron was more impressive (to me) than the 315-yard 5W.

All I have to say is that Tiger hit his 5 WOOD 300 yrds.. thats absolutely obsurd..

Yeah that's insane. He must really deloft his clubs when swinging.

The 8-iron was crazy too. Once again, a lot of delofting in the swing.

I highly doubt he's actually delofting. This is just what he can do when he really goes at it and has downwind/downhill conditions to work with.

Of course he's de-lofting. That's how you hit an iron properly.

I consider delofting anything beyond the norm.

i'm going to have to disagree. with the pressure on at the last hole, and the placement of the shot, i'll concede that the 8 iron was the more impressive with respect to ''shot making.'' however, from a perspective of length, power, and pure ballstriking, i'm going to have to say a 315 yard 5 wood is just plain crazy. i hit a 7 iron 175, and with a wind behind me 6 more yards is no big deal. but putting that much power into a 5 wood and hitting it accurately is completely beyond me.

Wow, that shot on 16 is one of the best of all time. . . Classic though, Woods hits the impossible shot and the opponent just crumbles . . .

Nicely said.

Easily the shot of the tournament and one of the best I've ever seen. It was a clutch shot at a pivotal moment, as Paddy's jugular was exposed and Tiger being the animal he is pounced on the situation. An individual here on this thread argued that Tiger did nothing to beat Paddy and that Paddy had actually given away the tournament with the wet ball on 16. While Paddy's apparent cut/flop shot which ended up in the drink hurt him, you'll have to pay Tiger his dues as he applied the pressure with the 8-iron from 181 yards to inches. Clearly it got into Padraig's head and the unthinkable ensued. Harrington's 4th shot on 16: He had what it appeared to be an incredibly tough lie. To get it up and down from there required a damn near perfect flop shot given the way the green slopes towards the water. From my perspective, it looked like he was trying to hit a high soft shot that just didn't come off right. It is quite amazing witnessing the power and precision this man possesses. Just another day at the office for Tiger it seems.

Has anyone mentioned that they were put on the clock?

Harrington rushed that 2nd shot - it was a poor attempt. Is it fair to put some final group on the clock? When it's Tiger and the crowd is 10 deep there is added noise and movement. Harrington was notoriously slow at one time and has been on the clock a good few times but he has gotten quicker.

Don't think he "crumbled" as stated above. Found himself in some tricky spots and was unable to make the shots. He went for broke and it didn't work. If anyone was watching it rather than looking at the end result they'll know that Harrington was caught, overtaken and then he bounced back to be one ahead with 3 to play. As Harrington has said to Woods "we'll do battle plenty more times" - would be sweet to get one back on him next week.

Of course it's fair. The pace of play policy is the pace of play policy, it shouldn't matter what group you're in or who your playing with. It has provisions that your timing doesn't begin until you can play with out distraction. For a twosome to take over 4 hours to play is absurd.

I dont really understand why the last group of a big time tournament would be put on the clock? Harrington was obviously rushing his shots after that. It was unessacary, i think.

This statement is absurd. We're not talking about hoofing your local muni here. We're talking PGA tour, playing for $1.4mil.

I've spent most of my life golfing - the rest I've just wasted.

I dont think it' so absurd when the players are at the highest level playing for big bucks- id say 4 and a half hours on a course like Firestone is acceptable.

So the next to last group should be required to play in 4 hours but the last group shouldn't? How is that fair?

    • Looking to play in the Severna Park Golf league and it got rained out the first three weeks. I know the course is being renovated so it is not in great shape but the location is easy for me and I would love to meet some other golfers in my area. Anyone here in Maryland Annapolis area?
    • I like to look at the positives.  Overall you are fairly consistent down the center with most shots 20 yards or less off center.  On most fairways that should be in play.  Sure, you had some very short duds, but also if you look there is a good cluster in the 110-125 yard range.  Sure, we would all like to be longer, but knowing your typical shot is more important than trying to hit the 7-Iron 175 Yards.  Just take more club for longer shots and do not worry about it.  Your distances may increase as you improve over time so do not get caught up on that now.
    • Day 552, May 7, 2024 Played nine holes with @NatalieB with irons only from her tees. Didn't really finish out any holes, just hit the irons and approaches and some chips.
    • What has gone downhill? Have you been practicing properly, filming your swing, working on exactly what he suggested without straying? My thoughts are that your results/outcomes from a lesson a year ago probably aren't all that relevant anymore.  And carry distance is far more important than total distance. Total distance is going to vary significantly based on course conditions.
    • One thing that has helped me tremendously is to spray the club face with foot powder when I am on the range. Seeing ball impact can be quite helpful if you are hitting shots all over the place. It's not the cure all, but a good little thing to do on the range. The other thing, and I will forget to do it, is the pre-shot routine. Find me a spot a foot or so from the ball in-line with my target, take my stance, take the swing.  Sometimes you take a BS practice swing with no thought. Make it deliberate.  As far as swing thoughts. I have 3 check-points. First is set-up, Second is my take away, Third is my downswing. I cant explain what I think I just know in my mind. Its a feeling that I have that feels right and experience has shown that if I follow those 3 thoughts more than likely the outcome will be what I was looking for. Now, thinking about the feeling and executing it properly is a whole different thing, that;s why I practice, I used to be over a 20 handicap, I am down to a 15.1 in about a year.  I feel like its good progress. the goal is a 10 by the end of the year. If I make it great, if not, hey at least Im not in Gaza. LOL
