Ok well I'm only 16 and have been golfing for about a month. I haven't golfed by myself. I always went with my uncle and dad. Well my uncle is back to work now and my dad only takes me once a week. I'm a little nervous to go out by myself. So should I just go out with my dad once a week or should I be less worried about going out by myself and just go?

Theres nothing to worry about, the best way to get better fast is by playing as much as possible and learning course management and etc. There are plenty of people your age that go out and play by themselves, as long as you are enjoying yourself I wouldnt worry about anything else.

don't be afraid to go out by yourself. Just make sure you are polite and you will be just fine.

Ok well I will probably go out Monday and golf nine and if that goes well I'm gonna do 18 on Wednesday. I guess I just need encouragement.

First times the hardest :P just get it done once and its all down hill from there. It should be fine though. I'd say at least 90 percent of people I've golfed with are friendly and enjoyable to play with

Thanks for comments everyone I'm gonna see if a friend will go with me he doesn't golf the course I do. So it will still be my first time out and I'll have someone to talk to.

That's ultimately best. I remember being nervous my first time on a full course - and I was a bit older than 16 (I was 22). I was really worried people would be upset at me for not shooting near par. After a little while, I found out that people don't care what you do, as long as you maintain etiquette and don't slow down play.

Let us know how it goes!

Slow play is one of my bigger worries but if its just me I should have a good pace if I don't hit the ball terrible.

If you notice people waiting for you, and the course is empty in front of you, offer to let them play through or pick up your ball and move on to the next hole. No one really cares what you score, but bad etiquitte affects everyone.

OK that really helps. I don't want everyone up there to dead me playing so I'm going practice good etiquette. Plus I think I might take a cart just to speed it up my first time.

Go early in the morning right when they first open on off days which are mondays around here, nobody's on the coarse . My golf buddy and I tee off 4 times a week at 5:45 am the coarse is still closed but we worked out a deal with the managment to pay when we are finished aroung 8.00 works out great and I'm at work by 8:30 if you are playing by yourself use 2 balls and practice all you can If you have a bad shot grab another ball and get it right.

You have nothing to worry about. My son and I took up golf about 3 months ago. At first neither of us could hit the ball very far. We play everyday and now we are getting better.

My nephew who is 8 has been playing with us the last few days. He hits the ball about 10 feet and that is after missing the first 2-3 swings each try.
The one thing we ALWAYS do is, as soon as we see someone behind us, we signal them to pass through, step off to the side of the course, and let them go. If your course is crowded, just wait until the end of the hole and let them through. It will slow you down, but someday someone will do it for you.

The more you play, the faster you will get. At first I could not hit my drive past the womens tees.

Yea I end up in the woods on 5 on my course. and its easy to lose the ball. I'm not worried about hitting the ball I can drive 200-250 yards. I'm just worried well for no good reason.

if its a course you're familiar with you shouldnt have anything to worry about, just be respectful of others and if a more experienced player comes up behind you, dont hold them up and allow them to play through. I play alone a lot. I like the fact that golf is basically the only sport where you dont need an opponent, the course is your opponent. And be patient as you'll play faster than a group of people so if you catch them most will allow you to play through if possible. I may not be a great player but i usually play pretty quickly and you'll find you go a lot faster playing by yourself.

Going golfing by yourself is the perfect way to learn. When you go with your friends/family or something, they are always tell you what to do and how to play and you're ALWAYS doing something wrong in their mind. I found out when I go myself I play a lot more relaxed and I learn better because I'm the one who's teaching me and there is no better teacher than yourself!

    • In terms of ball striking, not really. Ball striking being how good you are at hitting the center of the clubface with the swing path you want and the loft you want to present at impact.  In terms of getting better launch conditions for the current swing you have, it is debatable.  It depends on how you swing and what your current launch conditions are at. These are fine tuning mechanisms not significant changes. They might not even be the correct fine tuning you need. I would go spend the $100 to $150 dollars in getting a club fitting over potentially wasting money on changes that ChatGPT gave you.  New grips are important. Yes, it can affect swing weight, but it is personal preference. Swing weight is just one component.  Overall weight effects the feel. The type of golf shaft effects the feel of the club in the swing. Swing weight effects the feel. You can add so much extra weight to get the swing weight correct and it will feel completely different because the total weight went up. Imagine swinging a 5lb stick versus a 15lb stick. They could be balanced the same (swing weight), but one will take substantially more effort to move.  I would almost say swing weight is an old school way of fitting clubs. Now, with launch monitors, you could just fit the golfer. You could have two golfers with the same swing speed that want completely different swing weight. It is just personal preference. You can only tell that by swinging a golf club.
    • Thanks for the comments. I fully understand that these changes won't make any big difference compared to getting a flawless swing but looking to give myself the best chance of success at where I am and hopefully lessons will improve the swing along the way. Can these changes make minor improvements to ball striking and misses then that's fine. From what I understood about changing the grips, which is to avoid them slipping in warm and humid conditions, is that it will affect the swing weight since midsize are heavier than regular and so therefore adding weight to the club head would be required to avoid a change of feel in the club compared to before?
    • I think part of it is there hasn't been enough conclusive studies specific to golf regarding block studies. Maybe the full swing, you can't study it because it is too complicated and to some degree it will fall into variable or random.
    • Going one step stiffer in the golf shaft, of the same make and model will have minor impact on the launch conditions. It can matter, it is a way to dial in some launch conditions if you are a few hundred RPM off or the angle isn't there. Same with moving weights around. A clubhead weights 200-220 grams. You are shifting a fraction of that to move the CG slightly. It can matter, again its more about fine tuning. As for grip size, this is more personal preference. Grip size doesn't have any impact on the swing out of personal preference.  You are going to spend hundreds of dollars for fine tuning. Which if you want, go for it. I am not sure what your level of play is, or what your goals in golf are.  In the end, the golf swing matters more than the equipment. If you want to go to that level of detail, go find a good golf club fitter. ChatGPT is going to surface scan reddit, golfwrx, and other popular websites for the answers. Basically, it is all opinionated gibberish at this point.
