I went to the range today and saw one of my highschool friends. He is a pretty good golfer, but the best part of his game is driving. He was bombing them, going about 290 on the fly. Lately I've had this hook that seems to be getting worse and worse. He looked at my swing and gave me a few pointers. I corrected some things and some of them went straight. But most of the time when I caught it perfect it would still draw. He looked at my driver and said the shaft wasn't stiff enough.

I could feel the shaft flex with a 3w but not with the driver so I assumed that if I couldn't feel it then it didn't flex. He said he could visibly see the driver flex quite a bit and this could be the reason for the hook. The stiffness on my club says "Uniflex" with a 10.5 loft. Could this be the reason for my hook? Too much flex?

I checked my swing speed about a year ago and it was between 90 and 109. Sometime at the beginning of this season I came across more power. Possibly just making a simple adjustment. Now I think it's consistently about 100 mph. Is it time to upgrade?

it's not your shaft flex that makes you hook the ball. in fact, it doesn't make you slice it either. if your torque is too high that will make it slice, but not hook. there's something the matter with your mechanics.

What? It could certainly be shaft flex. If it is a regular or "senior" flex (idk what uniflex is to be honest) you probably need a stiff shaft and that could certainly help with your control.

I've heard the opposite from several sources. I've always heard/read that a shaft that is too "loose" for you will be whippy and can cause shots to go left. I'm no shaft expert, so I could be wrong here.

He had a way of explaining it but I can't exactly remember. But if you look at the top of the backswing the clubhead flexes down toward the body and if it maintained this flex at impact, the clubhead would be out in front of the ball and hit off the heel causing the hook right? The uniflex is a regular flex used for most beginner sets and women's clubs.

Yes, than the shaft can CERTAINLY be causing the big hook. You probably need a stiff flexed shaft...

A buddy I played with went from a uniflex shaft due to huge slices to a stiff and he almost never slices anymore. He could be refining his swing but I think the flex of the shaft is important as well. It would be interesting to see if this affects irons as well. I have a picture of my backswing and I never realized how much the shaft flexes on the irons.

Uniflex is ,if i remember correctly, more flexible than a regular shaft. The stiffer the shaft the generally more accurate you are. They say to always go stiffer if your between flexes. That being said, you generally lose a little power and may have a lower trajectory with the stiffer shafts. As for a 100 mph swing, you should have stiffys.

Without question a regular or weaker flex can cause a hook.

A while back I went to look at new drivers and asked to hit regular flexes. The person helping me looked at the monitor and asked if I normally hooked like I was on the simulator. I said it popped out from time to time. He said the reason was I was hitting a regular flex driver and my SS was in the mid 90's with the ocassional 100. he said I was torquing it too much which caused my hook. We switched to a stiff and not only was my hook now a draw, it increased my SS, ball speed, and decreased my backspin. Resulting in further more accurate drives 230 to 250-260.

However, I would go test some drivers our at a Golf Galaxy or similar, see if it helps before investing in a new shaft. It could also be the Native American.

another vote for you getting a stiffer/ lower torque shaft.........don't overdo it and wind up with piece of rebar....
