Ping putters used to be legendary. Are they still? I'm looking for a putter with no insert, but are pings still good? What are some other non-insert mallet putters besides scotty and mizuno? Thanks

Ping putters are still as good as ever and a whole lot cheaper than Scotties. You should check out the Redwood and Karsten series if you're looking for something without an insert.

I have a newer Ping putter and I love it....I am not a very good putter, but I can tell that its my inability to read greens and not the putter.

Ping definitley still has good putters. One of their first putters they came out with actually made a very distinct PING sound. ping anser started it all... most putter designs are loosely based off the original ping anser model. IMO the best non insert putters would probably either the scotties or pings, but Im not too knowledgable on putters I hardly ever switch putters

I recently bought a Ping Karsten Craz-e mallet putter and absolutely love it. No insert and I LOVE the feel. It's my first mallet style putter and I highly recommend it!

You got to love those mallet putters. They help me with my line. I have a Kombi but the 2balls are great too.

I like Pings. Other non-inserts I like are Cleveland Classic (milled for $75 or so), SeeMore, Never Compromise, and Guerin Rife. Screw inserts!

I putted with Ping until I got my Scotty. I have a Redwood Anser but need to have some tweaks made to it as it is too flat for my liking. I think the Redwood is the best line of the Ping so far, but they are the most expensive.

Also look at the Yes and Rife putters.

The difference is that the Redwood is milled from 303 stainless steel and the Karsten is cast from 17-4 stainless steel.

Ping Karsten Anser is a great putter, and still made in USA for only $89. If that's the style you like then there is no reason not to get the original.

IMO, Pings are still legendary because almost everything that Cameron, Bettinardi or Kia Ma has done is based off of Karsten Solheim's designs.
Ive got a Ping Anser and I like it. IMO, its just as good as any of the Camerons, T.P. Mills, Odysseys or Bettinardis I have owned.
Another really cool thing about my Ping is that it was 100% made in the USA. The clubhead, shaft and grip were all made in the USA and the club itself was assembled in the USA. Nowdays it seems like everything is made somewhere else, so its nice to see at least SOMETHING that is still made here.

Yeah-I'm not jingoistic about my clubs or anything, but there is something nice about hitting a club that's made stateside. Unfortunately, even PING is moving away from this trend-their newer iN and iWI models are Chinese, and their new irons are also MIC. Still great clubs, but the Karsten series are an especially great deal considering.

I hear ya. My Anser is a really nice putter that has excellent craftsmanship and the fact that it was 100% made in the USA is the icing on the cake.

Its just a shame that even Ping, who has seemed to be the most made in the USA of any of the clubmakers is getting away from making their stuff here. I know thats the way of the world nowdays, but that doesnt mean I have to be happy about it. Thats not to say that anything not made in the USA is junk, but Id feel better about spending money on stuff that puts food on the table of people here in this country instead of people half a world away who make $2 an hour.

    • I did the RTJ trail, we just did Grand National and Capitol Hill. We were trying to minimize travel time. It gave us 5 courses to play. You pare playing 3 of the 5 we played.  If I had to pick, I would play the Lakes over the Links at Grand National. Links felt too penal on approach shots. If you can't get height or spin, it felt like every ball that hit the center of the green ran off the back. A lot of the greens require force carry, no running it up. It just wasn't that fun to play.   Judge - Really good course, some really cool holes and terrain.   Senator - Really fun open course. They call it link style, I can't remember how much you can play the ball down, but it has the aesthetic appeal.
    • I do that at the range; I just have been going through a half-assed pre-shot routine. 😇 I just kind of waltz up to the ball and hit it. I catch myself just going through the motions of aiming. Once I started aligning my club to an intermediate target, I felt like I was aligned way open to the target but just trusted it. Like, if the club was aimed at the flag in the middle of the green, then my body was aligned left of the green or more (assuming something like a 100+ yard shot). I think I was more concerned with where my feet were lined up and not the clubface.  A question on alignment then.  So, the ball is like what, 3-FT away from the toe target line. So, does that mean if my toe line is aimed at the flag, the club is aimed 3-ft right? Does the perception of the green looking smaller in the distance impact that in terms of how we hit the shot? I feel like the geometry should work that the ball is actually aimed 3-FT right.
