Ok, bear with me here. (new golfer) Yesterday in my league on a par 4 I was in a greenside bunker. I hit my sandwedge and the shot went onto the green and about 4 inches from the hole. Another fella said Nice up and down ?

Can someone explain to me what Up and down mean?

Did I mention I love this game!!!!!

In golf lingo it means that you missed the green with your approach shot, then hit a ball UP onto the green, then DOWN into the hole with the next shot. Hence an up-and-down. It is sometimes quite an accomplishment, especially out of a bunker, so well done.

That is how I have always thought about it, someone else might look at it a different way. Some people consider it an up-and-down only if you make birdie or par. Others consider anything that gets on the green and in the hole in two shots an up-and-down, even it might be for a bogey or worse. Doesn't really matter, it has nothing to do with anything, just a golf term.

I will judge my rounds much more by the quality of my best shots than the acceptability of my worse ones.

I consider it to be anything that is off the green when you start and holed 2 shots later. The first shot onto the green is the "up" and the putt that you sink is the "down". "A chip and a putt" as one old fella I played with once liked to say. Like goblue said, there will be some that argue that it's only if you do it for par or better but I take it as doing it for any score.

One of the most important statistic that you can keep during your round is of course the number of putts per hole, per round but the next most important is your up and down percentage.

Whenever you are off the green record whether or not you get up and down to one putt for that hole. does not matter if it to for par, birdie, to save boogie but as long as you one putt after your shot onto the green. What I on my score cards is to mark a 1 for any attempt and I circle the 1 if I get up and down, then after 9 hole I record my attempts and successful up and down and add both front and back nine total of up and down and calculate the successful percentage rate. work to become 60-80%

To lower your scores you will discover that putts under 30 per round and improving your up and down stats so they are 60% or better are key to a low and consistently low score. Paul Gyodos had only 23 putts on Thursday's round to shoot 6 under and I heard another pro during the year had only 21 putts for 18 holes.

In summary work from the hole backwards to score.

"Up and Down" generally refers to a short game shot that doesn't require more than 1 putt. It's a basic indicator of short game skill. There is no indication of your net score after you completed it. If the up and down was for par, you will sometimes see "Par save %", where you still make par after missing the green. The concept is similar, but "Par save %" encompasses holed out short game shots for par as well. When referring to sand play, it's typically called a "sand save" or sometimes a sandie. Your sand save % will reflect your general bunker skill.

I agree that it does not matter if you are getting up or down for par, bogey or worse. The concept is to get on the green in one shot, and into the hole on the next. You often hear on tournaments the commentators saying "He's got to get up and down for his bogey now".
