  1. 1. Would you rather be a great putter or a great driver?

    • Putter - it's all about putting it in the hole!

    • Driver - Grip and Rip!

Golf Monthly magazine recently ran a poll: which would you rather be, a great driver of the ball or a great putter? The results were 72% putter, 28% driver. Interesting to see what the Sand Trap folks think.....

Me? Tough question, but I tend towards driver. There is something just viscerally satisfying about knocking a ball long down the fairway. And I can't ever remember having to take penalty strokes or losing a golf ball because of my putting.

I already consider myself a pretty good driver... so I'll say putter, just so I'd know what it felt like to be money from 15 ft and in.
My Clubs: Callaway FT-i Tour LCG 9.5° w/ Matrix Ozik Xcon 6 stiff; Sonartec GS Tour 14° w/ Graphite Design Red Ice 70 stiff; Adams Idea Pro 2h(18°) & 3h(20°) w/ Aldila VS Proto 80 stiff; Adams Idea Pro Forged 4-PW w/ TT Black Gold stiff; Cleveland CG12 DSG RTG 52°-10° & 58°-10°; Odyssey...

without a doubt driver... YOu can make birdies from the fairway being an ok putter. It's hard to make par from the woods

You use your putter more than any other club during a round. Easy choice for me.

I think a driver is like the golf source of "instant gratification" whereas a putter is like "delayed gratification".

I prefer a kick ass putter, because ultimately i use this club on every hole probably 2-3 times more then my driver.

Why not both, you then start and finish a hole with gratification.

Because that would upset the balance of the universe.

I am a great putter and save my %$# so many times making 10+ footers. Most of my golf buddys are good drivers and i watch them 3 putt greens all the time and i win the hole. You can drive 290 and il drive 250 we both hit iron shots on the green, i hit my putt you dont. Have fun losing strokes on every green. Easy decision. PUTTER!

I'm going to give you a little advice. There's a force in the universe that makes things happen. And all you have to do is get in touch with it, stop thinking, let things happen, and be the ball.

If I could chose only one it would have to be putter.

Reach in two and drain it/ tap in. Better than sometimes reaching in one sometimes two, then three or four putting.

This is a no brainer. Putter.

I totally agree with the comment you drive it 290 and I'll drive it 250.

I finally realized about a month ago that I need to spend time on my short game and not worry about getting an extra 20 off the tee. I revised my practice routine and now spend a lot more time on the practice greens. I've dropped my handicap from a 16.2 to a 8.9 in the last two revisions. It's due mainly to my chipping but I'll bet at least a stoke or two is putting related.

No brainer, PUTTER. If you can get in the close vicinity of the green in reg, you should save par a big % of the time

Putter. Definitely. I wouldn't mind losing some serious accuracy in every club from the 6-iron to driver if I could trade it for the difference in the putter.

Easiest question ever --- PUTTER

The reason pros are pros is not because they drive it 300+ (although that helps). It's because they scramble like crazy and average less than 29 putts a round on wicked greens.

Driver is the sucker answer here...

No brainer = Putter

Isn't like 65% of your strokes on putting/chipping?
