Hello all,

This is officially my first rant here on The Sand Trap.

Yesterday (Sunday) 2 buddies and myself put the balls in the air at 10:08am. Before we set off, we were given a forth; a very nice older lady.

We were on the 3rd fairway waiting to hit out shots into the green (medium distance par 4), we are about 215 out after a couple of lay up shots off the tee (severe dog-leg right).

All of a sudden a guy in the group coming up the 2nd fairway (2 groups behind us) starts mouthing off at how, "we need to speed up, you're not hitting the green from there," etc... We kind of brush him off, both hit 4 irons within 15 feet of the pin. We then proceed to ask this man if he saw the shots. We exchanged words, etc. I suggested that if he didn't like a backed up course than he should probably not be out at 10:30 on a Sunday.

He continued to talk, so we approached him, he saw that we were not older men (both of us are good size and 25). He was intimidated, so he then decided to shut his mouth...

...We leave it alone, approach the green, putt, and then wait at the next tee due to the group in front of us.

i.e. We were not playing slow at all, it was just a backed up Sunday. And actually we played a 4:45 18; so it wasn't terrible.

I wonder if he was just one of those pissed off golfers who throws clubs, yells, etc.

I will say, I have never had anything like that happen, I was very frustrated. I could barely putt for 3 holes due to the adrenaline.

The lady with us said that we were her heroes for 1. standing up for our group & 2. not getting into a physical altercation with this jackass...

Sorry for the long rant, but I was very very disappointed/frustrated with his behavior..

Good job on keeping your cool. Better job for proving him wrong. :)

I am growing to love golf and just don't understand why some of these people pay so much for fee's, clubs, balls, and everything that goes into golf just to go out and have a miserable time. I want to have fun regardless fo how I'm playing. Sure I get frustrated but that's my fault, not anyone elses on the course. If you don't have time to golf, don't golf. It's not my fault your priorities are outta whack.

Good call.

Rudeness is a plague that infects everything in society today.

What happened with enjoying a beautiful Sunday out with friends on the golf course?

Very good of both of you to stand your ground and show him that you were playing at a good pace. Some people don't see that they are the problem.

Generally it seems golfers are above the population average for a$$holes per capita (meaning we have fewer in our sport), but unfortunately they still exist.

This type of episode brings up the one reason to carry a cell phone on the golf course: call the clubhouse and explain that there is a verbally abusive player giving you problems without justification and ask they send out a marshall immediately. Twice I've been with someone who did that and it actually worked well - kept a confrontation from turning ugly, put the aggressor on notice with someone of authority, and also alerted the golf course that there were pace of play issues that they needed to address.

It's unfortunate, I've noticed that some people see a woman in a group and assume that she's slowing down play. These same people wouldn't say anything to an all male group.

At age 25 you handled it much better than I would have at 25. You did the right thing. No one had a cell phone when I was 25. Stand up for what;s right , then call the clubhouse. Enough complaints and people like that will be barred from playing the course.

Some people just don't have a clue. They think if there's a hold up it must be the group right in front of them that's causing it.

One time our group was walking up the fairway after teeing off on a par 5 and a guy who's playing behind us tells us to hurry it up, we try to explain to him that we've been waiting on the group in front but he tries to tell us that they're too far down the fairway (yeah no shit buddy it's a par 5). No points for guessing how far away we were when his group was teeing off. Didn't hear a peep out of him afterward.

Man, dont sweat it. Misery loves company. It's as simple as that. Dude was probably scrubbing it up, and was trying to take it out on someone else. Good job on handling it well.
