Is it just me or is starting out in golf one of the most confusing things you've ever done? haha

Just like you I'm extremely new to golf and I'm currently looking to build my first set. Every store I go they recommend a different brand/club. Every online forum you get 500 different opinions. Confusing I say!!

Congrats on the pings. I've actually made an appointment for this coming saturday with a club fitter so I'll be ordering my irons/wedges saturday. Cant wait tell I can start my "Building my first set" thread.

get a SW and putter first.

After that your ok for the time being.

Maybe get a hybrid or fairway wood for a bit of extra distance on the fairway and rough.

Get used to your clubs first.
No need to expand too quickly.

If you haven't bought anything, or even bought much yet, I would save the money on a fitting for golf shop clubs, unless you're totally loaded of course. Go to Costco and get the $200 set they have there. I have hit them. They don't have the greatest feel or even the greatest distance, but none of that matters for you right now. They were easy to hit, and had good yardage gaps. It is the red Wilson set. Comes with a driver, a 16.5* wood (4 wood), a hybrid, 5i-SW, a putter, and a decent stand bag. When you grow out of this stuff piece by piece, you will have a whole set of good beginner clubs you can pass onto a friend to help someone else get into golf.

It's a perfect set for a beginner to work on for the time being, just to get your swing in a groove, THEN you can look at getting a fitting. Right now your swing isn't good enough to warrant a fitting. You're swing plane is going to be all over the place. Your tempo is going to be all over the place. Even your swing speed will be all over the place. You're going to hit a lie board, and you're going to put marks on it all over the place. Just no point IMO.

even though I didnt get a SW with the Pings

Back to wedges, don't overlook the importance of the short game. Like most folks new to golf you may be thinking about the long ball. No problem, we all fall victim to this. Hey, it is fun, and that is the point of playing in the first place. One thing you need to know is when you get inside 100 yards, you will be dead in the water with nothing but a pitching wedge in your bag. Some say just get a sandwedge and I understand why they are telling you this. But consider this, if you are hitting off tight and firm lies, a sandwedge will be about as much fun as slamming your pecker in a door. It has too much bounce (angle on the clubhead sole) and will not be the right club for many shots. And aside from this, you won't likely hit a SW from 90 yards anyway. And if you do, hitting it 75 yards, or 50 yards, will be a big challenge. Now look at it from my perspective, if you get the Cleveland 588 set I mentioned you would then have a gap, sand, and lob wedge. From 100 yards, you hit a gap wedge. From 75 yards, you hit the sand wedge. From 50 yards and in, you hit the lob wedge. Seems simpler to me. And aside from that, the better you get, the more emphasis you will put on your short game anyway, so why not get started giving this area of your game the respect it deserves. For fun, next time you play, count all strokes you get inside 100 yards (including putts) and subtract it from your total stroke count. Upon doing so, you will be on Amazon ordering Dave Pelz "Short Game Bible". ha ha....

Man, you said it So many choices. You learn from your mistakes and that is why folks are out buying golf equipment all the time. Well, one reason, some folks just enjoy it I think. Best advice was given before me, get custom fitted and do it right the first time. Had I taken my own advice, I would have saved thousands. ha ha..

I think getting fit is the best advice. Go in with a price range you are comfortable with and hit clubs in that range and see which ones you like the best, and then spend away . lol
What clubs you buy should be decided by what you can afford and how you hit them and not by who makes them or what pro plays them.
Don't forget, a putter fitting will go along way for you.

Yep, I think its really too much to take on to try and learn a driver, hybrid, FW and putter all at the same time. Good chance for over frustration.
