I need help here and wanted to hear your opinions I currently carry a

Driver
3Wood
5 Hybrid
4-9 Irons

I am looking to cover more of the gap between my 3 wood and 4 iron. Is my 5 hybrid enough? Would a 3 or 7 be better acquisition.

Something in your analysis seems off. Your 5 hybrid is essentially replacing your 5 iron. So I am wondering why you would use a 5 hybrid, but hit a 4 iron which is tougher to hit than a hybrid.

Assuming you like the Nike Sumo 5 Hybrid, I'd suggest just picking up a 3 and 4 hybrid of the same style, shaft, etc. I probably use my 3 and 4 hybrids as much as any other club, often as my second shot from the fairway or rough. Though to really do your homework, you should map out what lofts all the relevant clubs are, and see how best to fill in the gaps.

In my case, I go from my 3 wood to my 3 and 4 hybrids, and occasionally play a 2 hybrid. My hybrids are the Nike Sumo Sq Hybrids, and they are very useful, and easier to hit than my 3 and 4 irons.

Thank you very much for your insight.

Let me clarify, I was given a 5 hybrid by a close friend who knew I had no hybrids. This is my first set of clubs I had purchased (9/09) and he noticed I had all Nike Sumo Gear and was being nice. I wanted to complete my equipment this winter for a strong "indoor season". ;)

Do you hit your 3w well? I would probably get a 5w and a 4 hybrid, and not carry your 4 and 5 irons.

That would leave you driver, 3w, 5w, 4-5h, and 6-9i.

Also, you carry no wedges? You should get 48* and 56* wedges so that you can start work on your short game. Later on, you can fill in those short gaps further.

I carry a 21* 3hybrid. You could easily get a 20 or 19* hybrid as well.
The Nike SQ hybrids are without a doubt the best and easiest to hit hybrids. I have a friend who cant break 150 to save his life and he even smokes my hybrids and constantly asks to borrow them. I got one square and one rounded one and they both rock.

The other hyrbid that I hit that was nice was a 19* Cleveland Halo. Too bad I hit my 21* 3 longer with the diamana stiff shaft. Its an unbelievable club if you get one you wont be sorry.

I am 100% sure anyone who has ever hit one on a course will agree about the SQ hybrids, please chime in! These 2 clubs alone have changed my game big time.

I hit my 3 pretty good.

There is no set equation. It depends on so many things like the shaft (flex, kick point, length, weight, ...), MOI, swing weight, and on and on.

As a high handicapper, honestly, just gap lofts somewhat equally, a degree or two here and there isn't going to matter much with these long hitting clubs, and just try to groove in a consistent swing and be done with it. In the future, if the difference between 200-205-210 yards really makes a difference for you and you can seek a pin from that far out, you can look into honing in these long club gaps. Honestly though, I'd rather carry an extra wedge. Personally, I am bridging an 18* 5w and a 27* 5i with a 23* hybrid (aka 4h).

I know this was a few months ago but I just read this. I play the sumo clubs....after a 6 iron I only carry the 5 and the 3 hybrid, then a 5 wood and driver. there is not too big a gap between the 5 and 3 hybrid for a short hitter. If you are a fairly long hitter, you would probably have some distance gaps....but if money is an issue....pick up a 3 hybrid on ebay, they are cheap now

I would think a 20* hybrid would fill the gap pretty well, and you can choke down on it to play like a 4h if needed.

the reason he carries a 5h and a 4i is most likely because he hits the 5h longer than the 4i. The longer, lighter shaft in the hybrid will make it go farther than his 4i even with less loft. How far do you hit the 5h? How far do you hit your 5w? I would say a hybrid with a loft of 22*, but that is just another internet opinion.

Being able to choke down a half-inch or full inch can be a way of closing a distance gap anywhere inside your club mix.

    • I work with a lot of golfers who want more shaft lean at impact, who currently have AoAs that range from +2° to -2°, and who love to see the handle lower and more "in front of their trail thigh" from face-on at P6. And a lot of these golfers try to solve the issue by working on the downswing. They do something to drag the handle forward. Or they just leave their right thigh farther back so the same handle location "looks" farther forward. Or they move the ball back in their stance. Or they push themselves down into the ground to get the handle lower and increase (decrease?) their AoA (to be more negative). The real fix is often to get wider in the backswing. To do LESS in the backswing. To hinge less, fold the trail arm less, abduct the trail arm less. I had a case of this over the weekend. Before, the player had 110° of trail elbow bend, "lifted" his trail humerus only a few degrees, etc. The club traveled quite a bit around him, and he tended to "pick" the ball from the fairways. In the "after" swings below (which are mild exaggerations — this golfer does not need to end up at < 70° of elbow bend. These were slower backswings with "hit it as hard as you normally would" intent downswings), you can see that he bent his elbow about 70° instead of 110° and lifted his right arm an extra ~15° or more. You can't see how much less this moved his hands across his chest (right arm abduction), but it was also decreased. His hands stayed more "in front of" his right shoulder rather than traveling "beside" them so much. The two swings look like this: The change at P6, without talking about the downswing one little bit (outside of him telling me that he tends to pick the ball), is remarkable: Without 110° of elbow bend to get out (which he gets to 80°, a loss of 30°), the golfer actually loses slightly less elbow bend (70 - 50 = 20), but delivers 30° less elbow bend, lowering the handle and letting the elbow get "in front of" the rib cage… because it never got "behind" or "beside" the rib cage. If you look at this video showing the before/afters of P6, you'll note the handle location (both vertically and horizontally) and the shoulders (the ball is in the same place in these frames). This golfer's path was largely unaffected (still pretty straight into the ball, < 3° path and often < 1.5°), but his AoA jumped to -5° ± 2°. I've always said, and in talking with other instructors they agree and feel similarly, that we spend a lot of time working on the backswing. This is another example of why.
    • We had a member of our senior club who developed a mental block on pulling the trigger. I played with him to see what the membership was talking about. I timed him a few times when he would get over the ball. 45 seconds. He knew he had a mental block and would chide himself, “Just hit it!” Once on the green he was okay and chipping was a bit better. It was painful to watch him struggle. Our “bandaid” was to put him in the last tournament  tee time with two understanding players. We should have suggested to him to take a break from our tournaments. I agree with the idea that when a player realizes they have a problem, the answer is to go fix it and not return until they are able to play at an acceptable pace.
