  1. 1. Which course would you play?

    • two times a month at a $100 upscale daily-fee golf course
      14
    • 4 times a month at a $50 local muni.

twice a month at a $100 higher end course or 4 times a month at a $50 muni?

If you could only afford to spend $200 a month on playing golf.

Also, the question assumes that the $100 is worth the price...better fairways..greens, etc

Id choose to play 4 times a month at a muni. The courses arent that much better at the more expensive courses and you are less likely to run into golf snobs at munis.
Not to mention Id much rathar play more often than to play at a nicer course.
I just dont see where a higher end course is worth the money.

Fortunately I do not have to make that decision, but I dont feel that there are too many munis out there worth $50 a round.

Whether you drop $50 or $100, you want your round to be worth it and a course in good shape is always a better value than once that isnt.

Around here it's $50 for the upscale public courses and $20-25 for the munis.

I'll take the munis, the most I've ever spent on a greens fee is $29.

I've seem munis that I wouldn't pay $15 to play, and some that I can play for $50 that are as nice as any course anywhere. That makes it a tough question, but I'll take playing more over paying more .

As someone mentioned, I'm glad that I don't have to make that choice, and I play 2-3 times a week most weeks.

upscale twice a month to many times have i paid 50 for courses with hoorible conditions but a 100 on the other hand has always been the nicer much much nicer

Depends entirely on the architectural interest of the courses.

Better greens and fairways don't make a better course.

it really depends on the course. First off..... i've never seen a $50 muni.... but in the spirit of the question I took it as this:

Would you rather play a poorer quality muni for twice as much golf vs playing an upscale course half the amount of outings....?

It REALLY depends on the courses. Conditions are definitely a factor... but more than that is the layout, challenge, design, length of the course. Muni's vary SO much in my experience in course conditions.

Sometimes playing off ant piles and watching your putts bounce like it's possessed by a mexican jumping bean just takes the fun out of golf.

It's hard for me to justify a $100.00 on a round of golf. I rather play 4 times for less money.

I agree, unless you are talking about a world-class course. Honestly, I cringe at paying any more than $30 (walking) for a round of golf. I'll play a par 3 for $10 a round (9 holes) before I pay more than $30 for 18 holes on a full size course.

If you are not living around Washington DC area, Yeah 4 times at municipal course would be the choice for me too. But as knowing original poster is in northern VA area, I, (also live in same area) choose to play 2 times at $100 courses.

I have played at many regions for last 20 years but here in DC area is the worst. Municipal course green fees are around $40 - $80+ easily on weekend and their conditions are not really good. Among those courses, some are not even playable when it gets wet. Some are decent but cost $80+.

I rather go and practice 2 hours on grass range and hit 9 holes at nicer courses 4 times per month. I believe that can be done less than $200.

FYI, Montgomery County takes good care of their municipal courses. Try Little Bennett GC. If you can drive further, check out Canon Ridge GC or Richmond area's Tradition courses. You can find good deals at Golfnow.com.

All...like PiustheDrGolf said...municipal courses in the Washington, DC area range in price from $40-$90+ with cart. Laurel Hills (in Lorton, VA) charges $89+ tax & it is a municipal course.

I like golfnow...I played Lake Presidential in Upper Marlboro for $40 about 2 weeks ago.

I play on a lot of military bases. I have a push cart & play Ft Belvoir for $24 (18 holes).

PiustheDrGolf...thanks for the advice about local courses.

    • Day 444 - 2025-12-18 Light day of hotel room work. GEARS Summit v2.0 today. Good day.
    • Day 38 (18 Dec 25) - got out in the backyard with grandson this afternoon.  We got into a little game of pitching the ball from about 25yds to a target point just off the asphalt lane behind the backyard.  Goal - just clear it with a quick hop and stop.  Focused on using the wedge swing motion I was talking with the course pro yesterday….smooth and thru just bruising the grass.  In addition to a concentrated focus on technique, it also called for a quiet mind locked in on target point.  Rehearsed this with both the 50° and 55° wedges.
    • I listened to the Shaun Webb one about the swing coach app. Sounds like a great thing and will (hopefully) be very useful for me. I do think the hosts are underestimating where AI could be in a few years. Right now it's just regurgitating stuff that it has been told or it has scrubbed from somewhere else and a human guiding things will be quite a lot more helpful than just the AI, but it's going to keep developing and it will reach the stage where it's figuring this stuff out on its own. Time will come when it will have you do a TPI style screen and take various height/arm length/leg length etc. measurements, have you tell it some history and your time constraints and goals and what not and it will watch a video of your swing face on and DTL and it will know exactly what you need to work on.
    • I found it entertaining, but the announcing was lousy.  How did the measuring on the final shot start with Rory being closer and being told he won, and then with no explanation it turns out Scottie won?  Weird.
    • Day 128 12-18 Worked on rotation and getting to lead side. Still working on the flow feeling while doing that. Recorded swings.
