I am looking for a club to get me 230-240 yards...

I hit my hybrid 195-210 yards depending on contact

I have a 3 wood but have never used it off the deck.

Should I pick up a 5 wood for this yardage or you think a 3wood would suffice?

Off the tee, Im good for 230-240 with the 3 wood. would that distance translate to hitting off the fairway?

Oh and is a 3 wood from the rough a bad idea if the ball is sitting up?

Thanks!

Jim

I don't know if you're concerned, but to follow the "only 14 clubs rule," if you added a 5W you'd need to drop another club. Anyways, how often do you actually run into 230-240 yards? I don't see a need for a club for a yardage that I'll never use. Didn't like Arnold Palmer drop like an 8 iron in a major for the entire weekend? Instead of a 5W and a 3W, possibly try a 4W to cover both. One final note, if your 3W already goes 230-240 yards, but you can't hit it off the fairway, learn how to hit if off the fairway! You'll probably lose 5-10 yards off the deck vs. off the tee.

Oh and is a 3 wood from the rough a bad idea if the ball is sitting up?

Just make sure you don't go under the ball. Choke up just a bit and take practice swings so that the club head is on the same plane as the ball. I don't particularly like a 3W out of the rough since I never practice, so I'd recommend trying it out in a practice round before actually doing it during a "real" round.

In my honest opinion, shallow your swing plane and hit a two-iron... just kidding... you considered yanking 3-metal for a 14-15 degree hybrid... its a hell of a lot more accurate for a mid handicapper than a 3-metal

Usually a fairway wood from the rough is a recipe for disaster, unless you are just trying to put it in the fairway. I cannot shape shots from the rough, nor can I depend on a set distance. Why don't you try hitting your 3 wood off the deck next round, or at the range? Either way, I can guarantee that you are going to lose some distance compared to a tee shot. My 3 wood off the deck has a lower trajectory (obviously) and loses about 10 yards. However, nowadays I almost never tee up a shot when using anything other than driver.

Great replies guys, thanks, actually went to the range to practice hitting that 3 wood off the deck, something Ive never done. Tiger's book scared me when he said dont hit 3 wood off the deck...

Well it was a lot easier than I suspected and I got some great distance out of it... but my misses were weak low shots and high cuts..... Cant have either of those if the shot "counts".

I really only planning on using this type of shot on par 5's that I would like to reach in 2....

And yes, I'd drop my 60* if I added a 5w.

But now Im thinking maybe like a 15* hybrid....

I dunno..

Have to see how the 3 wood acts on course.

Get yourself an older three wood with a compact head and shorten the shaft a bit.

For what it is worth I hit my 5 wood as far as any 3 wood I have ever hit. I like it much more than any hybrid. I can get a much higher launch angle and carry it farther.

As for the second question, probably is a bad idea. I personally will not use anything above a 5 or 6 iron out of the rough. But your rough is totally different than mine so you might be able to pull it off. Here, it never sits up.

You can pull it off sometimes - if the rough is a little thin and dry. A more reliable shot can be an iron - get back into play - or a 5Wood or hybrid.

Ralph Maltby's MPF book has a diagram about balls in the rough. General idea: If you hit a 7 iron, you pop the ball up and out of the rough. If you hit a 3-wood, you have to drive the ball through the grass before it starts to rise. Ball sitting up: Do you feel lucky??

Ouch.....Cheetah Woods had that one coming.

Actually, I love a 3 wood off the deck. I sure don't crank it quite as far as I do off a tee....maybe ~85%. The key is to get the clubhead face shape that fits your desired results. I do best with the wider, lower slung faces that help launch the ball upwards. The deep faced 3 woods do not help me as much. My last 3 wood was like this....excellent off the tee but so-so off the deck. My current wood is really great in both categorys (for me, at least.....I just wish it had a tad heavier shaft).

I doubt that a club with the same loft as you hybrid will get you 20/30 more yards. If you hit the 3 wood 240 off the tee then there's no way you'll manage to hit a five wood that far. I lose about 10/15 yards hitting my 3wood off the deck because I concentrate more on making pure contact while when I hit it off the tee I rip it since there's more margin for error. I used to use the 3 wood from the rough when I had less knowledge about golf but it doesn't work for me. I only try it if the ball is sitting up in really short rough, more like the first cut of rough, and my ballstriking has been excellent for the day.

Hope this helps.

Yea I think you may be right, but wouldnt the longer shaft help me get some more yardage out of it?

Guess it doesnt make sense to have an 18* hybrid and a 17* 5 wood huh?? I actually used the 3 wood off the deck during a 9 hole round yesterday. I would just drop a ball in the fairway and let it rip. I hit some really strong, whistling shots with that thing!! Accuracy was OK, but not exactly where I wanted to be. I think with a little more practice, Im gonna start slaying those par 5's!! Jim

    • As I mentioned to @StuM, that’s definitely a destination I would be interested in, but it would probably be a smaller outing due to it’s price and location, and completely different than the annual thing this outing in Ohio has become.
    • Thanks guys - I’ve been absentee here for a while and I don’t like it.
    • Let's recap how things have been going lately now that the tournaments/events I had in May are done. Overall I'm satisfied with how I've played so far this year. Not ecstatic about it, but not disappointed either. Certainly have some things to tighten up, but I've also made some good strides and hit a ton of high quality shots. Breaking it down by section  Driving - This has been quite solid when I remember my swing thought and fully commit to a very specific target rather than just aiming at the fairway and hoping. Distance and quality of strike have been good. The new U505 3 iron I put in the bag has become an absolute weapon. I hit 5/5 fairways with it at Virtues yesterday averaging 250yds over 4 shots (Removing the one outlier where I hit it 299 with a severely downhill tee shot to a downslope fairway) I need to rely on this more and stop trying to force driver when I don't have to.  Approach - When I focus on and remember my priority piece, irons are solid. When I don't, they aren't. Go figure. Fell into some old habits over the past few rounds due to mostly playing with not much practice lately. Will be changing that over the next few weeks prior to a few upcoming events towards the end of June.  Distances have gone up a bit, everything is about 7-10yds longer than I'm used to so that has taken a few months to fully trust on the course, but I'm getting there, I'd say like 95% of the way confident with fully trusting the yardages. Need to work on hitting partial yardages more, especially with longer irons. I'm decent at it with shorter irons but don't have the same feels and confidence with longer irons. Wedges of 50+ yds have been pretty solid, have good feels for yardages and have done a much better job of taking the extra club and hitting lower flighted wedges that hop and stop rather than rip back when they land. Short Game - Mixed bag here. Chipping and pitching from the fairway has been good, not quite as good out of the rough, worked on some technique yesterday with @iacas at Virtues and he thinks a thinner wedge sole should help too. I have been chipping with my 54 more lately instead of automatically grabbing my 58 and it has been good, I'm realizing I don't always need to go high and soft, mid trajectory and running works just fine most of the time. Putting - Pretty solid overall. Have done a good job implementing my setup changes from Evolvr and trusting those. Speed control has been good, short putts have been solid, biggest thing I need to work on is being very specific with where my aim point is, especially in that makeable 6-15 foot range.   Couple overall takeaways that I learned from watching some better players and that don't require any additional skill to implement My dispersion/shot zone with Driver and long irons is bigger than I think it is. I need to do a better job aiming away from trouble/hazards and don't be afraid to lay up on a par 5 from 200+ out when there's hazards near the green.  I need to do a better job reading the greens prior to chipping/pitching onto them. I've hit a number of solid chips and pitches that landed where I wanted, but my landing spot wasn't correct for the pin position based on the green slopes. Implement the feel I have for my priority piece (especially with irons) as part of my pre-shot routine and make sure I do it every single time.   I'm making plenty of birdies, in 2024 I'm averaging 2.4 per round, but I'm also making plenty of bogeys or worse, averaging 5.81 bogeys or worse per round. A lot of the bogeys are sloppy silly ones that could be avoided and that better players simply don't make. Better aiming on long approach shots and more attention around the greens should help quite a bit towards reducing the bogeys per round.   Main things to work on over the next few weeks Film iron swing and get back to mirror work at home/gym and more partial reps. When I was hitting my irons the best a month or so ago I was doing mirror work daily. Pick very specific targets with tee shots and rely on 3iron more often especially when I can hit it and still have a short wedge in my hand (which is most par 4s at the yardages I normally play). Figure out what wedge setup I want to go with to replace my 54 and 58, Vokeys and RTX are at the top of my list. Leaning towards Vokey 54-10S and 58-12D grinds at the moment, those seem like good fits for what I use each of those clubs for. Continue to practice chipping with my 54 and short game shots from the rough with both wedges.
