That'd be interesting to see. I know that Golf Digest features a golf each month. It was Yang this month. They have a shot of the bag, with details on each club and its distance. One of my favorite parts of GD actually. Tells me how I stack up against those guys.

Here are Rory McIlroy's distances for each club via Golf Digest (print is a little small, they are in the lower right corner): http://www.golfdigest.com/equipment/...g_rory_mcilroy

He doesn't hit his irons as far as I thought actually. Of course the pro level is all about accuracy and he probably "takes a little off" when he is trying to be precise. Interestingly, he also has some big gaps in his lower irons/wedges.

Hunter has a "what's in the bag" article too, but there are no distances given. pgatour.com ( http://www.pgatour.com/players/r/?/02/47/81/stats ) lists his driving distance avg at 297 yds for 2009 (28th). McIlroy was 305.2 off the tee (good for 7th).

There isn't much info out there it looks like. For most pros, the only thing we know is their driving distance.

In case people couldn't zoom into the article I linked on Rory's distances I copied them here:

Driver (8.5*) 305 yards
3-wood (13*) 270
5-wood (18*) 245
3-iron 225
4-iron 210
5-iron 200
6-iron 185
7-iron 170
8-iron 160
9-iron 145
PW (48*) 130
SW (54*) 110
LW (60*) 95

Like I said before, I thought he would be a little longer with the irons. I don't think he has to worry about distance though...the kid has skills!

Could be an easy question to answer, but ill ask anyway: How do pro's know exactly how far they hit the ball?

-Do they rely on the yardages their practice range gives them? -Do they pace out the steps with a distance wheel? -Do they rely on the yardages of a simulator? -Do they rely on the yardages of something like a Sky Caddie? -Do they rely on the yardages on the course? I would like to know because I do not have an EXACT distance on each club to the yard, my club distances are more like 10-15 yard windows. So I was wondering how I could go about finding my distances like the pro's do. Or are these just averages? I know if you ask Tiger how far he hits his 5 iron he will tell you xxx yds to the T.

I have a feeling these numbers for Rory are just estimates and the 10-15 yard window you were mentioning. He has his 8-iron listed at 160, but he could probably dial it up to 170 if he really goes after it. I really don't know how the pros get exact yardages. I'm sure they (and their caddies) do know them though. If Tiger has an 5-iron in his hand like you said he isn't ballparking like most of us do, Stevie and him probably know how far he hits it to the inch.

I have pretty good estimates for myself, but they are still only estimates and came from years of playing. I rely on the plates at my home course which I have checked with a skycaddie or rangefinder and they probably aren't all wrong. I'm sure it would help my game to know exactly how far I hit it. Something like yardage also varies depending on the time of the year (ball goes shorter when it's colder), elevation, wind, etc.

Yeah, the max distances they can actually hit are pretty astounding, i.e. Tiger Woods 180 yard 8-iron and Sergio Garicia's 250 yard 4-iron.

There are several ways you can figure it out but having a GPS and or a Rangefinder really help the process.

I have both and use them regularly to dial in distances not just check how far the pin is. At the range I use the rangefinder to hit the range pins and then dial in the club to that distance. On the course I use the GPS(not as accurate) to keep all my drive distances and then average. Also sometimes when it is slow at the course I will drop 10 balls at some random place in the fairway and hit a club and then use the GPS to mark off all the balls and then average. Over time you will get a pretty good idea of your club distances.

    • Yes, this is the 2024 model. DSG ruined what Callaway perfected for most golfers. A darn good 3 piece golf ball. Now it's a 2 piece cheap ball. To me a 2 piece ball is fine and a 3 piece budget ball is better. I prefer a slightly harder ball, something in the 65-75 compression range that will perform similar to the old Gamer. The Titleist tru-feel is pretty good. I planned on giving Maxfli straightfli a try.
    • Is that the current generation Gamer? Another old standby for a firm and inexpensive ball is Pinnacle.  There are two models, the Rush and the Soft, but I don’t know what compression they are.
    • Good advice, but according to DSG website it is a 45 compression ball. My current ball is the Top-flite Gamer at 70. 45 is too low for me to go.
    • The 3 piece Maxfli Trifli is 2 dozen for $35.  The Trifli does not feel as soft as the Maxfli Softfli, which is why I like it. Other options would be one of the Srixons, which have a buy 2 get 1 free offer.
    • I have been carrying a 7 wood more often this year.  It’s especially handy if you have a downhill lie to an uphill green.  It’s also handy if the rough on the course is deep.
