This is my first real post so hi everyone. I've been reading on the forums and have learned a lot. Basically I'm getting back to playing golf after a lot of years of playing tennis. My knees cant take it any more. I've been going to the range religiously to build reliable strokes and learning about equipment. I just got a set of Mizuno MX200s and love em. Now to my question. Years ago I was set up in a group with a guy that played on the University of Florida golf team. Every time he teed off, the ball would fly low for about 30 yards and take off like a rocket. It made such an impression on me that I've always wondered how that's done. What are the equipment, ball, and stroke requirements for that shot? I sure would like to be able to do it. I think I did it once accidentally.

This was caused by balls spinning too much off the driver. Older balls spun a lot, and they didn't do as good of a job of minimizing said spin off a driver... so what was happening is the ball was spinning and the drag would cause the ball to balloon into the air. While it may look really cool and powerful, it will rob you of valuable yards off the tee. Today's balls and drivers do it less, and being properly fitted will also make a difference. Now people know the best launch angle / spin combination for maximum yards and it is increasingly easy to find equipment to deliver such.

long story short... you don't want equipment that does this.

You do have to admit, it is a pretty shot looking at it from the tee box though.

Yea man, I love playing with guys that hit like this. Their distance is usually decent and its such a cool looking ball flight. Ive played with 2 guys that hit like that and I still havent forgotten them. That says something.

I remember going to the range back in 1999, when I had just picked up some old clubs, and decided to play the game again. There were these guys there who hit that exact same shot, and I just used to marvel at it. I could never figure it out. What it is is some of those old steel clubs. They had steel shafts and steel heads. The steel shafts launched the ball very low, while the steel heads imparted a ton of spin. This results in a low launch with a tremendous climb. The way I hit this shot now is by using a 2 iron.

Don't know if you're allowed to. One of the posters on the "

3-iron guilt " thread said that people with more than a 5 hdcp shouldn't carry longer than a 5 iron.

Oh yes I am. Check out the

GolfTalk thread, Am I misguided carrying a 3 iron? This thread includes other interesting suggestions too.

This is one of the ball fiights promised by Top Flite (old ones - mid to late 1980s).

The regular Top Flite (aka Rock Flite) was long, low and straight. Top Flite XL was longish and really high. Top Flite Plus was the one that flew like your description. It went out like a regular Top Flite and then distinctly climbed a bit higher. The Top Flite XL was a better all aroud ball (as far as 1980s 2-piece rocks are concerned), but it was fun to play a Plus.

Mizuno MP600 driver, Cleveland '09 Launcher 3-wood, Callaway FTiz 18 degree hybrid, Cleveland TA1 3-9, Scratch SS8620 47, 53, 58, Cleveland Classic 2 mid-mallet, Bridgestone B330S, Sun Mountain four5.

    • I am currently playing a Cobra Ltdx LS 9 degree driver and Cobra Ltdx LS FW3. Both with Tensei White stock stiff shafts and original weights of 12g (heel) and 3g (toe). My miss is usually a pull fade or sometimes a slice, swing is out to in. Driver swing speed about 112 mph. Grips are stock regular. Intended change: Driver: Switching to Tensei White x-flex one inch shorter which I suppose would be 44,5? Changing heel weight to 18g. Changing grip to Golf Pride Z-grip cord midsize. Change hosel setting to standard draw. FW3: Changing heel weight to 16g (apparently not available in FW weights, but supposed to be something called "internal weight" a club builder can add which fits between the weight and the screw?). Change grip to Golf Pride Z-grip cord midsize. Changing hosel setting to standard +1. The goal is to 1) get better grip since I tend so lose grip in warm and moist conditions with the current grips and 2) mitigate the misses to start more straight with less side spin. Also considering adding the Cobra Ltdx LS FW5 instead of my old Taylormade R9 and getting 14g heel and 6g toe weights with the same grip as the others and hosel setting standard +1.   All of the above is based on conversations with ChatGPT and, as everyone knows, it can come up with pretty much whatever but I spent a few hours asking about different perspectives etc and this was the recommendation. So, my question is basically, does it make any sense?   Thanks.
