This is golf. Even the best players in the world have off days. I think to bash the number 2 in the world is kind of stupid. Didn't he win with two drivers?? Hasn't he won a bunch working with Pelz?? What he has done so far seems to be working. If it wasn't for some guy, can't remember his name, he would have been number one for most of my adult life.

Good post...but remember he beat Tiger's ass in the last tournament of the season last year, top 30 players...how soon we forget the joint photo session of Phil and Tiger holding the season ending trophies...

He will never approach Tigers record but probably really doesn't care...he sort of reminds me of Brett Favre ... "THE OLD GUNSLINGER"...rolling into town to put on a damn show! I got no problem with that.

My impression of the article which inspired this thread is that the author is actually a Mickelson fan, but like many of us, he gets frustrated by Phil's antics. Phil is truly his own worst enemy. He's kind of like the guy who forgets to zip his fly... every now and then something sneaks out which should never be shown in public.

But it's just Phil being Phil, and I'd be amazed if he ever changes that. I've mostly been a fan since he first popped up by winning a Tour stop as an amateur, but I tend to react like the author.... Just when he seems to be getting it together, he again does something outrageous.

At least he keeps us entertained.

I agree with everyone that Phil's worst enemy always looks back at him whenever he looks in the mirror. With Phil, it's like waiting for a car wreck. You know it will happen, but you don't know when and where. But that's also what makes him exciting to watch.

If Phil played like Jack Nichlaus (i.e., good course management and play the high percentage shots), Phil would have won a heck of a lot more tournament, but would have been boring to watch.

The author realizes that Phil is just too wild in his approach to golf.

I have to say, I never found it boring to watch Jack play. If you did then you have no appreciation of good golf.

I'm going to take the opposite opinion here. Phil is Phil. He plays the game the way he wants to play it, and he's not going to change that. He's said as much himself. I think if he tried to play it any other way, it would take a great deal of joy out of the game for him. Phil isn't motivated simply to beat the other guy in the same way that Tiger is. Phil wants to win his way. Or more precisely, Phil wants to play his own game, and hopefully to do so well enough to win. And often enough, he does. Could Phil win more if he played a conventional game? Maybe, but I doubt it.

I tend to agree... Phil just can't play another way... it would not work for him. Also, he is pretty successful, but like Greg Norman we may always think how many he COULD have won instead of how many he did.

The other guy. McCarron.
