So i played today for the first time in about 5 months. For some reason my drives/hybrid shots were staying really low with a slight slice. Ive had the slice problem before but my drives were NEVER this low. They were maybe 15 feet in the air, and although they were carrying decently it just wasn't making sense to me. Another problem i was having was with my irons I am hitting a lot of fat shots, and taking too big of divots that are slowing down my swing. If anyone could give me help i would appreciate it greatly!
Thanks in advance!

Hard to say without seeing your swing, but seem like your swing plane maybe too steep.

sounds like you might be cupping your wrist. swing through the ball, not at it. when you make contact you want your left wrist to be straight or slightly bowed depending on the length of club. straighter for longer clubs. pretend like you're hitting the ball with the back of your hand. it may feel weird at first, but this will give you a feel of a proper shot. the divot should come after the ball, so theoretically the larger the divot the more spin you'll be putting on it.

Alright thanks ill definitely try that out the next time I'm at the range. And my dovots are after the ball they just seem too deep.

Thanks again!

Nah, it sounds like an improper wrist release; casting. This would result in both low screamers and fat shots. You need to sort this out. Your swing may be very timing dependent, and when that's the case, if your timing is off, lookout. Try to keep your hands much more passive.

ill definitely try keeping my hands more passive, but what exactly do you mean by my timing being off?

Any swing that requires timing is hard to repeat day after day. Timing requires you to initiate different actions at the exact right moments during the swing. Some days, your body's natural rhythm allows you to make the swing perfectly, and other days, it doesn't.

ahhh i see
sorry that im asking so many questions i would just really like to try to improve this and my game
are you saying that im releasing my right wrist too early in my downswing? if so when should my wrist be "released"

Posted
ahhh i see

Neither, I'm saying you could be releasing it too early, or too late. Both are the causes of fat and thin shots. The wrists need to stay out of the swing as much as possible, which will help you become much more solid. When a swing gets too wristy, you get low screamers, fat shots, too steep of a plane, big deep divots, and all sorts of other problems.

Check out Steve Stricker. He has minimal wrist action, but he can still hit it pretty long.

You might also want to put an impact tape on your driver. If you don't have those, blue painter's tape will do. Check the ball marks and make sure you hit it above the middle line of the driver face. Low contact on the driver face produces low launch angle and a lot of spin.

    • The term I hear most often is "double teeing" which means the course/club has starting times from both the #1 and #10 tee.  I have encountered this many times and we know if we are the first group off #10, we may well get to #1 and have to wait because there are groups still with tee times yet to tee of #1.  In most instances, where the course/club has a starter, he normally explains this situation.  In this case, the pro advised what you would could/would encounter making the turn to #1.  And, that is exactly what happened.  Probably would have been wise to talk to the pro after playing back 9 and ask when you could go off #1 since apparently that club does not double tee.   Regardless, the outburst towards the other group was uncalled for.  And, I don't blame the member for being upset.  As a member of a private club, you are responsible for the actions of your guest.  I have played many times as a guest in the UK and I am pretty damn sure my host was responsible for my actions while at the club.  I know at the clubs I have belonged to here in the US, that is the way it is.  As a matter of fact, the member may find himself being brought before management and facing possible suspension.  So, I don't blame him for being upset.  However, as the host, he really should have stepped up and put a stop to the OP's actions.  OP makes this statement "I now understand that standards are different on the "private course." But I'll take those lessons to the muni, too."  No, the standards are not different.  You, sir, seem to be just a bit hard headed and belligerent, even if you are college professor...which possibly explains a lot.   JMHO
    • Day 32: worked for about 10 minutes on my drill. Filmed it as well for a check in. I think it’s slightly better but still seeing some issues.
    • Day 44 (26 Dec 25)  -  played in the Friday men’s shootout with a twist - used the Toney Penna persimmons and MacGregor blades - had a blast playing these clubs.  They really help in zoning in on making solid ball contact.  Scoring was solid - had several looks at birdie and had a few par saves.  Overall a day of focused course management.
    • Day 2: 2025.12.27 Eighteen holes at Kauri Cliffs. Focusing on trying to keep flex in right leg during backswing.
    • Day 136 12-26 Had a different practice planned today but life happened. Worked on "wide to wide" and still working on remaining flowy. Starting the club head in front of the ball as a drill, is helping with the flow of the swing.
