At last year's member/member the final round was played with threatening skies and by noon it was dribbling to drizzling. Nasty and terrible weather for everyone involved but we soldiered on through the rain in order to crown a champion. My hands/grips got progressively wetter to the point that I could not take a full natural swing without the club completely slipping straight out of my hands. I kept an umbrella over my clubs and toweled the grips obsessively to no avail. It was not fun to stand over the ball knowing that the club will spin and come flinging out of your grip. I used rain gloves but they were eventually soaked as was the spare gloves in my bag. I had no relief other than to struggle to the finish which in this case was a loss for our side.

Any suggestions on keeping hands/grips/bag dry during rain? How about stickum spray? Anyone use that in wet weather to help hold the club?

we play in the rain all the time here in HI.. the footjoy rain gloves are great.. the wetter they get..the stickier they get. I also have a huge Titleis umbrella,,, a well fit rain cover that I put on at the first sign of rain... and several towels. I also carry a couple of shamwows in the bag.. they actually work well.

Rain glove, umbrella and towels. If you don't manage to keep the towels on the bag dry, keep one in one of the pockets to dry hands and grips. Also, keep 5-6 gloves in the bag so you can change whenever one gets all soaked up.

rain gloves. pretty much all of the companies make them. i had a set of foot joys, those things would stick to a wet seal.

diddo - they're great; plus the frogger towel does a great job of drying grips since the inner side of the towel stays dry

I have gotten stuck playing in the rain several times and have come up with a few things that help out.

First, go prepared. If there is even a slight chance of rain I will grap an extra towel or two, throw my rain gear into the bag, and grap the umbrella. Just a rain jacket can be a big help since you can keep gloves and your hands in the pockets. When it starts raining I will put a small towel on the supports under the umbrella. Chances are, no rain will get in there. Then you should have at least one dry towel. I will try and keep my hands in my pockets or wrapped in a towel until I need to swing. That keeps them dry for as long as they can be. When I grab a club, I will wrap the grip with one of the smaller towels I brought until I need to hit. That will keep them dry for as long as possible. Unless you are very strict about it, you might have to waive your normal preshot stuff to stay dry. Figure out what you want to do and hit the ball before you get too wet.

There are also a couple of 'standard fare' things for me. In my bag I always have a few things. 2-3 small towels triple wrapped in plastic bags. Just in case a dry towel is needed. I also keep all my old gloves (7-8 years worth) in ziploc bags in my golf bag. It could start pouring on the first hole and I will have a dry glove to use per hole. They won't be in the best condition, but they will be dry and that is all that is needed. I also keep a small rosin bag. That serves well with sweat, but can also be used on grips and hands in the event of rain. It might make a mess after a while, but gets the job done for a shot.

When all else fails, just grip the club really hard and pray. Sometimes that is all that can be done if it is slipping and twisting

I will judge my rounds much more by the quality of my best shots than the acceptability of my worse ones.

Great tips! This thread reminds me that I need a good rain jacket for such times. I usually stop playing when conditions bear it, but this tourney left me stranded and forced to play I'll admit unprepared.

I like the ziploc idea for gloves and spare towels. Also, liked the foregoing the preshot routine and the small towels in the raincoat pocket setup.
I hadn't heard the rosin bag but was shown a tack spray that a member plays with to great effect. Is the use of a a tack spray illegal as it is for NFL players (American Football for my overseas friends)?

Here in upstate NY we play in quite a bit of weather, mostly cold which I handle with no issues. I don't like playing in the rain but find it a necessity at times when in tourneys. Thanks again for the tips and let me know your thoughts on the legality of use of a tack spray on gloves and grips during rain play.

Indeed good advices and interesting ones as well. Although it seems that all that hassle with towels, keeping hands in pockets, etc. would take a considerable amount of time. Also looks like it works only when it is not windy and the umbrella keeps still and in position (which often is not the case). Actually, last summer a friend of mine placed his umbrella against his trolley in order to make a shot and it only took a couple of seconds when wind picked up his umbrella and blew it in the middle of a water hazard!

When it is really raining (means everything will be pretty wet in ANY case) I do not bother trying to keep the grips/clubs dry but use a rain glove on both hands. A good rain glove sticks to the grip when wet with no problems whatsoever. When not swinging I keep my hands (with the rain gloves) in big sheep wool mittens. These will be warm even when wet. This is important as hands will eventually get very cold as the rain gloves are wet all the time. A real challenge when playing 2 rounds per day...

Apart from that I take extra care of my feet by using a pair of well prepared shoes (waterproof with beeswax or similar applied on the surface) or even golf rubber boots with spikes/spiders, if it is really wet.

And finally, good waterproof jacket + trousers, waterproof hat with large brims and a complete bag cover.

This is a great thread. I like to keep at least two towels in plastic bags in my golf bag if it's looking like rain, extra gloves as well. I take off my glove after I hit to try and keep it dry, I stay under the umbrella as long as possible, too. Most of all, I accept the fact that the rain will affect my game and I probably won't score very low. I've thought about a keeping a rosin bag with me, too. MLB pitchers seem to like them.

FULL. CORD. GRIPS. BABY. Aside from the fact that full cord grips rule the world, when it's raining you get to watch your buddies with all rubber grips fiddling for a dry spot on their towel while you just give yours a simple grazing on your pant leg and are good to go.

Here's an approach that seems sensible

hilarious! although, if you went through such a rigorous routine to keep dry on the golf course, the people behind you'd be pretty pissed off.

Yeah, but I think with some practice you could do most of that quickly (i.e., if you're not posing for the camera). In fact, you'd want to since he spends a lot of time where the rain would be pouring down on the club unnecessarily. Of course, I have no firsthand experience because it almost never rains down here (though I did decide not to play today because it was pouring).

THIS, FJ rain gloves rock, and I also use them when it's temps get really cold....
