Why is my HC 14.9?? My last 10 scores that count Ive played to a :

18, 19, 15, 15, 16, 14, 15, 8, 11, 18

So.... does 14.9 sound about right looking at those past 10 hc's??

Thanks!

I think so. When you're handicap is counted, not all of your scores are counted. I think it's like the best 5 of 20 scores actually get counted.

It looks like you should do some basic research on how your handicap index is calculated. We've got several articles/threads on this site alone... and countless others exist via the magical google. Here's a simple one:

http://thesandtrap.com/rules/whats_your_handicap . Your handicap is not how many over par you shoot, but you seem to believe it is by posting whole numbers. Your differentials aren't very likely to all be .0 numbers. They're multiplied by 0.96, after all... so even a course that's 72.0/113 isn't going to give whole numbers. That said, if we assume those are the differentials, your handicap index would be 12.6 if you take the best five of those. But really, handicaps are from your last 20, and if you have only 10, then it's from your best 3 (which would drop your "handicap") to 11.0. So, assuming those scores are actually how many over par you shot, and the 14.9 number is accurate, you're playing a course that produces 14.9 where just taking par gives you 11.0. For example, par 72 but 69.3/100.

Those arent my over par numbers Erik, thats the index I played to for those 10 rounds, no they werent .0 numbers, I just didnt write in the tenths, I just rounded to the nearest whole number. for the sake of simplicity..

I'll check out those threads, thanks!

Then whatever it was you used calculated them wrong, because 8, 11, and 13 != 14.9. Or your handicap comes from more than 10 posted scores, which would start adding in up to seven more of your better differentials.

Either way, don't do stuff "for the sake of simplicity." Your handicap index is in tenths, course ratings are in tenths, and it's a waste of anyone's time to try to help you with things when you've "simplified" for them. Also, you should buy a copy of Scorecard.

Hey Erik, these are the numbers, in chronological order. There are 10 numbers, because these are the numbers counted towards my HC

18.1, 19.8, 15.8, 16.8, 14.9, 15.4, 15.4, 11.9, 8.4,18.2

So looking at those, does 14.9 sound about right??

And yea, Im looking at scorecard now, I entered in some stats, only 1 round entered, but I'll do it for the next 4 four rounds, and If I like the stat tracking, I will pick up a copy.... Money is really tight, so I wanna make sure this is what I want.

Thanks!

If you average those #s (i.e. add them up and divide by 10), then multiply by 0.96 = ~14.9. So yeah, it sounds about right.

Yea I was reading about that .96 and why they use that number. Sooooo now I get it! Thanks for the help everyone! If only I could play to a 14.9 every time!

Yesterday I was on track to shoot 70's. Three blow up holes and it was all over

Gotta eliminate those blow up holes

This is not the way you calculate handicap.

----- Here's the deal: either those are the only ten rounds you've posted, or simply the last ten rounds you've posted (and you've posted others beforehand). If those are the only ten rounds you've posted, you calculate your handicap by average the best three differentials of the ten. In this case, your handicap is (8.4 + 11.9 + 14.9) / 3 = 11.7. If those are the last ten rounds you've posted, there are two possibilities. Either you've posted at least twenty rounds in total, or you've posted 11-19 rounds in total. In the former case, average the ten best differentials of you last twenty rounds. In the latter case, average the n best differentials of your x posted rounds, following this chart (sorry for the sloppy formatting): x posted rounds ........ n best differentials 5-6 ........................... 1 7-8 ........................... 2 9-10 ......................... 3 11-12 ....................... 4 13-14 ....................... 5 15-16 ....................... 6 17 ............................ 7 18 ............................ 8 19 ............................ 9 20 ............................ 10 (Note that, according to this chart, if 9-10 rounds are posted you average the three best differentials. This I what I did earlier.) As Erik said, it's probably the case that you've posted rounds other than the ten you listed for us; these other rounds (worse, I presume) are what make your handicap 14.9. EDIT: Oh yeah, don't forgot to multiply by .96 when it's over. (This would make the 11.7 an 11.3.)

He's saying - and I didn't think he made this clear either - that those ARE his best 10 of his last 20 differentials.

It seems to me like he is saying those are the 10 bet he has posted, not just out of the last 20? Maybe just a miss-type but that's what he appears to be saying.

No offense intended here, but I feel like you wasted our time. Why are you doubting the handicap calculated by a site? A five year old (well, one who knows how to use a calculator) can figure out your handicap - the odds of a website getting it wrong are slim to none.

You said "my last 10 scores that count." That's ambiguous because all 20 of your scores "count" by some people's definitions. Some people use the word "count" to mean "scores posted for handicap," not "scores which are USED to determine the index." For example, I don't post the occasional "practice" round where I hit a few balls and fail to hole everything, even if I kind of get a score out of it.

You're not supposed to if your handicap is legitimate. You should only play to your handicap 25% of the time.
