I finally was able to play a round with new TP reds today I love this ball around the and off the tee my only issue is when I hit my irons the ball is a full club shorter. Should I switch to the blacks or what should I do. I love the ball though.

You shouldn't choose a ball based on how far your irons shots go. With your irons, you shouldn't care about how far you hit the ball but instead how consistent you are at hitting each yardage and how well spaced the yardage gaps are between each club. The only main attribute you should look for in a ball when it comes to your irons is how much spin you generate (ie. how well the ball sticks to the green).

The softer design of the TP Red may be the contributing factor to the shorter distances with your irons. I'm surprised however that you didn't have the same shorter distance with your driver? This all being said, msd3075 is right. If you love the ball and feel consistent with it, it shouldn't matter that the irons distances are shorter. Just adjust your distances accordingly and enjoy a ball that you feel comfortable with.

Looks like I'm going to have to go to a open field with them and measure out my new iron distances with them or simply take more club. I feel very comfortable getting up and down with this ball. I just hope they don't discontinue the ball due to the penta ball.

I got some free two pack samplers recently and tried them out....

Bridgestone e6: Nice distance, good feel off the putter, but won't stop and drop.

Srixon Trispeed: Distance similar to e6, good feel off the irons and putter, but still won't stop and drop on the green.

I was able to play an entire 18 with each of them, so I still have some samples. guess they'll go in the bin I keep for my two grandsons who are playing. I have a 5 gallon bucket in my garage to deposit found balls, or balls with too many scuffs, that they can grab when they need shag balls or practice balls.

It's back to Callaway Tour ix for me.

One thing I've noticed when using a softer/spinnier ball (I usually play the X-version of premium balls) is that I might lose a small amount of distance on shorter irons (not really noticable), but I lose at least one club on my longer irons. I'm assuming the additional spin "balloons" just like people complain about with their driver.

As for the original post saying he didn't lose distance with his driver, maybe he is getting more spin and ultimately better launch conditions with a spinnier ball (more spin --> more carry).

If you feel very comfortable getting up and down, you may not want to change much, that's a good attribute to have.

But my two cents is that it's possible you are losing distance because the ball is launching lower than whatever ball you were using before. The TP Red is a lower-launch/lower-spin ball (compared to the TP Black, which is the opposite), which could result in a loss of carry distance if you are a mid-low ball hitter as it is.

Out of curiosity, what ball were you playing before?

What does "stop and drop" mean?

Presumably the same thing as "drop and stop," if you aren't being needlessly picky/pedantic.

What does "stop and drop" mean?

It's what I do 1/2 way down the 18th fairway because I've been smoking cigars and drinking single malt for 4 hours.

Try the new Taylor Made Penta. I have read that it is now the best ball made. It is everything you want in one ball. Out of every review that I have read I have not read a bad review yet. Everyone says it is as close to perfect as you can get. I haven't checked in on the new Bridgestone so I can not comment on it. Callaway balls to me are not that great. Srixon I wasn't to very impressed. Pro V is better than all of them except the Penta per the reviews that I have read. i will try the Penta. I am going to check in on the new bridgestone as well.

Hadn't heard the term "drop and stop" either. And what does pedantic mean?

Check out the new Wilson FG Tour. It has a soft feel, but really sticks around the green. 3-piece urethane. I don't hit down on my irons very well and these things were still dancing on the green. I did not notice that it was longer or shorter than any other ball that I've played.

When I missed the green the spin really allowed me to be aggressive on my chips. Fun ball. Has a soft, muted 'click' for putting.

I also want to try the new Maxfli Tour LC ball. One of these two balls or the ProV1 will be my ball in 2010.

Really? I found i hit softer balls further with my irons than harder ones. Im a full club longer with a pro v compared to a NXT tour, for instance. I hit spinner balls lower, too.

    • Had to correct the distance - should have read 5,400 not 5,500  yds.
    • Had to report this one - played Minnesott again today with my son.  We played behind the Friday Men's group and had a decently paced round.  My round started off par-par-bogie.  I was feeling good to be +1 through three.  Played the next two par - par and then disaster hits - well I thought it may be the unravelling of +1 through five.  Tee shot on six is a hard pull hook into the ditch separating four and six.  I know the ball is lost and re-tee - hitting three off the tee on this par five.  Long story short - what should have been at worst a bogie became a triple 8.  Now I'm +4 through six holes.  Get a solid par on seven (which I celebrated as a solid recovery hole).  Eight is a birdie and I'm back to three over.  Nine, a par 3 over water, finishes par for a 39 front.   We roll to the back to where I birdie ten (the toughest hole on the back) to be -1 after the first hole on the back, +2 for the round.  Par eleven, twelve, thirteen, fourteen and fifteen - that was an in the zone moment.  Have to note that fourteen - the second par 3 on the back - I hit the tee shot just short right of the flag.  Easy pitch with the 56 should put me close for a tap in par.  It does not happen - as I duff the pitch to about 3yds closer.  I reset and this time I nip it nicely only to see it land and slowly roll to the cup and drop in for a chip-in par save ( a first).   We get to sixteen and I am thinking this could be a really good round.  It's also a par 5 and I hit a solid tee shot.  I'm about 220 from the center of the green and figure I can layup with the 3w as there is a nice landing area in front of the green and it would play nicely into the typical distance I hit this club.  I'm sitting about 50 yds from the flag to the right hand side.  I overcook the 56 and see the ball bounce off the back of the turtle green.  I hit an easy 56 again to see the ball roll to the other side of the green.  Long story it became a 3putt double.  Now I am +4 through sixteen.  The last two holes are solid pars - one an up and down, the other a GIR two putt. Finished the back 1 over at 37.  Total score is a 76!  A new personal best.  Best "all around" play through the bag to date.
    • Day 562, May 17, 2024 Spent a LOT of time on GEARS stuff today, so while waiting for imports, exports, and all manner of things, I did some rehearsals in the mirror and camera in my basement.
    • Day 16 (17 May 24) - Plans to play a local course with a good friend fell through, got with my son to play Minnesott.  Turned out to be a great day of golf - as we were playing behind the Friday Men's group, pace was steady but not rushed or dreadfully slow.  Had a solid day of ball striking - managing 11 of 14 fairways hit, 8 GIR and 5 nGIR, 27 putts (including a hole out chip in from just off the green to save par with the 56deg wedge).  Shot a new personal best of 76 (39 front / 37 back) from the gold tees (just over 5,500 yds).   Was a good day and my son had a decent day for him as well with an 88.
    • Day 312: Chipped for a bit indoors off my mat. Working on good contact and direction.
