Took my first S/T lesson this week and when we reviewed the pix, I was flipping at impact...having tough time holding the flying wedge....also having a tough time keeping left arm straight in the follow through sequence...my elbow was apparently bending too much....any suggestions?

Uhh, "don't do that"? Is that a good suggestion?

Just kidding. The Golfing Machine defines a few motions. A chipping motion (two feet back and through) is called "basic motion." "Acquired Motion" is a longer stroke - about a half a swing. I'd work on a drill where you don't go much longer than the acquired motion - arms parallel to arms parallel (to the ground) - back slowly and then swing down and through. You'll want the sensation that you're keeping your elbows very close together and that you continue to maintain pressure between your arms and your chest (you can put a nickel in there and not let it fall out). If you have a big squishy ball that you can squeeze between your elbows, put it there and make the shorter acquired motion swings. The flipping and the straight arms (and loss of the flying wedge) are inter-related. If you flip, you're going to get the left elbow pulling away because otherwise the club will get into a really awkward position with the flipping. So try that - swing from 9 to 3 at 50% speed and really squeeze your elbows together and keep your arms against your chest, both PP4 and PP5 (pressure point).

I found a foam ball in the toy section at Wal-Mart that works perfectly for this. It's about the diameter of a medium sized plate. At first I tried using one of the inflated toy balls, taking a little bit of the air out to give me the right fit between my arms, but found that with the changes in temperature the size varied too much and I had to either add air or take out air too frequently. The foam ball never needs adjusting.

Not sure if they still have them as I haven't bought one in about a year. They are relatively cheap.

Meta Moment:

The Taly is great too. It's a different approach, mind you - a ball squeezed is active learning, while the Taly is more about visualization and developing your own feeling...

Nice. Heck, you could roll up a sweatshirt and tie it with a shoelace if you want - whatever works...

I took another approach to this by tying a band around my waist and left arm. That way, I couldn't possibly get the left arm away from the chest. Greatly improved my ball-striking. Didn't record any video, but the ball went lower and it felt better.
