Are there any approaches to putting for those who cannot keep a straight stroke due to shaking hands? I have constant trembling in my hands and it just magnifies its way down the putter. Its this way all the time, not caused from nervous putting.

This plagues me when I am setting up to the ball. Makes it hard to set the face square at address. However, once the stroke starts, it seems to go away.

Take a beta-blocker or drink two beers before hitting the green, that helps with what is called "essential tremor", hope it helps.

It depends on what your condition is, if it's nerves, then sure, a couple beers may help.

If it's a nervous system irregularity, low iron(which also causes shakyness) or something of that sort, a relaxer isn't going to help because it's not nervousness that is causing it.

You could try holding your breath during the stroke or breathing with the stroke (in going back, out going forward)

What about trying one of those heavy shafted weighted putters? Think of it like this - if you hold a thin dowel or stick like a putter the end of it will dance all over the place, but if you hold a 10Lb sledge hammer like a putter the weight of it will temper down your hand movements. I picked up a used heavy putter a few months ago and it really feels different using it. It's out in the garage, otherwise I'd get the name of it for you. Might be worth looking into.

My elderly father has shaking hands, not parkinsons. The jumbo grip used cross handed or belly putter both help him some. The long putter did not work well. Amazingly he can still carry the ball 195-200 yards, only 15-20 less than I do. We haven't figured out a way to help on short chips, also a problem.

What he's describing sounds like a condition called Essential Tremor, and yes a beer or two or a beta blocker (usually taken for high blood pressure or arrythmias) does help.

EDIT: a little evidence-based medicine for you: http://www.nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus/e...cle/000762.htm

Does it bother him on full swings too? I don't notice it at all on full swings, or even at setup for that matter because I waggle while getting setup.

It certainly doesn't effect my long game, I can hit drives anywhere between 250 and 300.

Check out the company "Heavy Putter". The product is what the name implies, and for the person whose father shakes as well, I believe they also make a wedge.

Your desire to change has to be greater than your desire to stay the same.
