When you just starting at a driving range/golf course, what club do you use for warming up?
Whats in my Golf Bag:
Driver: Nike Sumo 5000
5 Wood: Mizuno MP-001
Iron: Mizuno MX-950 5-PW
Wedge: Cobra FP 60 degrePutter: Odyssey 2-BallBall: Yellow balls

I start with my 56 to get a good tempo going. Then I go to a 7 iron because that's my favorite club and warming up with it helps me gain confidence. Then I hit my 2 hybrid and driver because those are the two clubs I tee off with the most. I finish with the 56 to take the feeling of swinging a wedge to the first tee.

Practices goes with stretching first then 5-7 balls a piece in this order 8,6,4,7,5,9,2H,PW,3W,AW,D -----> tee box

Pitching wedge is always the first club I pull out of the bag at the range. Not sure why exactly.

Depends on whether it's a range session to work on a specific part of the game, or just a warm-up prior to playing. If it's a prelude to playing a round, then first some stretching (especially if it's my usual early morning tee time), and then from short irons to long irons (chipping/pitching is first as it doesn't use the full swing - progress through the club lengths to the longer clubs needing a full swing). Finally, some woods, and then some time on the putting green.

I stretch, then hit a half dozen 50 yard shots with my 56*. Then a half dozen 100 yard shots with my PW. I like to work on nice 3/4 swings, for control and accuracy. I then typically grab my 6i and hit a few follwed by my 3i. Lastly I finish with about 3 shots with my driver.

Then I putt for at least 10 minutes and I am ready to rock.

I usually start hitting 60-80% pitch shots. I've never really been able to fit anything more than a 6 iron on the warm up area, but that may change now I've started at a new club, where there is a much longer practice fairway.

I start off by hitting some pitch shots with my gap wedge. I do it to mostly find where the bottom of my swing is going to be for that day. I dont really care where the ball goes. Then as i feel i got a good tempo going, i go for an 8i for some fuller swings.

Start with 5 or 6 iron (maybe 2 or 3 swings,) then 3 iron.

a few smooth (and very slow) swings with 5 or 6 iron
a few more swings left handed
< 5 minutes of stretching
~ a dozen full swings
~ another minute of stretching - like working on rotation with the driver shaft across my shoulders
go time hitting balls with a mid-iron

I'm in my 40s now - a good stretch is a good thing

I do minimal stretching, which I MUST get better about, swing two clubs in an arc over my head forward 10 times then back 10 times, a couple of practice swings without a ball with my heaviest club, my 3 hybrid, then I pull out the gap wedge and hit short pitch shots to 10 or 15 yards, and slowly work my way up to a full swing, going about 60 yards or so. Then work my way down the clubs, SW, AW/GW,PW,9i-driver etc.

I don't know if it's effective, and as I said, I really do need to spend more time stretching. I kind of like Sean_Miller's method of stretching then hitting then stretching again, I think I'll try that at the range today.

I use a 9-iron to start. The reasons for me using a 9 is kind of goofy. I will hit more balls with the first club than any other, especially with a small bucket just before playing. I start slow and work up to a full swing and use a 9 for most of it. Then I will hit a 6 or 7, then a couple 3-woods and drivers off tees and I should be ready. If I have the time and unlimited range balls, I will do a lot more, but my regular courses just have the small bucket.

I figured out a few years ago that I tend to not hit the 9 as much on the course as I do the 8 and wedge. So I hit the 9 more on the range to kind of equal out the wear and tear on the grip and head on the 8-9-W group. Even as I type it, I know it is stupid. I just came to the conclusion that if I use an 8 or wedge on the range, those grips will wear down faster and the 9 will be fresh.

I will judge my rounds much more by the quality of my best shots than the acceptability of my worse ones.


I use my driver to help me stretch out by making VERY slow baseball swings, gradually lowering the plane of the swing. The first balls I hit are with my sand wedge, to get the feeling of bringing the club through the ball correctly. Then it's straight through the bag, two balls with each club. I don't want to pull out my 8-iron on the fourth fairway, for example, and that be the first time I've swung it all day.

    • Day 198 (16 Nov 24) - A little backyard pitching fun with the grandson with wedges, foam balls today.  Love working with him on short game drills.  Priceless is the word.

    • A strong grip cups the wrist (lead) and then it wants to flatten through impact, something I used to be able to avoid to keep it from going left and protecting my forearm (the main premise of my set up). Longer the club, harder it is becoming. Either way, yes, I need to transition to gripping it open. 
    • Why don't you grip it "open" so you can return your hand to the place where you're comfortable/not sore, but the ball won't go left? It's effectively weaker… without actually "being" weaker?
    • Day 47 - 2024-11-16 Light backswing work with about 3 or 4 rehearsals for every ball hit. Only about ten minutes while waiting for a potential member to show up (he was 25 minutes late). 😛
