any value in a local city frugal golfer blog (IE: would you read it?)

I have a confession, I am frugal (cheap, stingy, etc) I love to find things that are undervalued. I have taken this "interest" and applied it to Golf, and I have been searching for local golf deals in and around the Chicago land area.

Yesterday, for instance, I played Highland woods golf course (nice course) for $25 with a cart. So I was thinking, I have subscribed to all of the local course news letters, I watch the hot deals sections of the local golf courses, etc. I am curious, if I put together a blog about local golf deals, would people read it? I am not looking to make money, or in any way benefit from this, other than to hook up golf courses that are aggressively priced with people that are looking for those types of deals. I am willing to spend an extra few minutes driving to a course further away if it will save me $10, and I would like to think that there are alot of like minded people. The question is, does the internet travel well with golfers. Since I don't intend on making money on this, I don't want to put in the work if only a few people are going to read it.

In my bag:

some golf clubs

a few golf balls

a bag of tee's some already broken the rest soon to be

a snickers wrapper (if you have seen me play, you would know you are not going anywhere for a while)

and an empty bottle of water

I wouldn't do it. You don't want extra people crowding you on the course!

you are correct. I guess in an ideal world, I would use this as a way for people to post the best deals. If I had alot of subscibers, I would hope to see lots of emails when like minded people found like minded deals. But you are correct, alot of the courses that have the best deals also have low saturation (probably why they are giving the best deals) and its nice to be able to call in 4 days out and still get my perfect tee time.

Sure. I'd read it. Highland Woods. Never even heard of it, but now see it's part of the cook county forest preserve empire.

Id read it and Id bet that in times like these that a lot of other people would be interested in hearing where the deals are.

I think for certain folks in the city, who don't have a car, the transportation costs more than the golf. Finding cheaper ways to get to the course might save those folks more than saving on the green fees will.

Kill slow play. Allow walking. Reduce ineffective golf instruction. Use environmentally friendly course maintenance.

this is certaintly true, however a true frugal person is willing to travel for a deal. however, even I have my limits. For instance two weeks ago, I went to St. Anne, IL to play 18 holes for $28 with a cart. nice course, pretty easy, and that was a weekend rate. However, the fact that it was almost 80 miles from my house made the experience one I wouldn't likely repeat.

The spring deals (highland woods for $25 during the week with a cart) Poplar Creek ($35 with a cart after 10AM during the week) are all ending this week. I will probably start a blog here on this website. I have not found any spectacular

I'd read it/subscribe. Sounds like a good idea. By the way George Dunne IMO is a great deal. YOu can play with cart for under $50. Just print out the forest preserve coupon online.

In Chicago proper, without a car, you're not going to golf. Well, I guess one could take a bus to the 9 holer on the lakefront or the Jackson Park course near the University of Chicago. One of these summer weekday mornings, I plan to drive into the city and play those two courses.

I finally found a sweet deal here in Ohio. This course is ranked 14 on golf digest best courses in Ohio, and a monthly membership to their 9 hole course(out of 27), PLUS UNLIMITED range use, is $44 a month and then $15 per everyone else in your household. Bad part is it is crowded! And I only play around 11am on weekdays

Well good thing about northern ohio is that it has more golf courses per capita than alot of other places. One of this guys i golf with when i go back up to that area said he has some friends from boston and that area who have to get tee times weeks in advance to play golf. in that area of ohio you can find a golf course open to pulbic for walkons and at most a couple days advance tee times. I was actually shocked at how little golf courses there are in the Dayton area when i moved down here compared to Cleveland, Akron and Canton.

But, if its a good deal, good golf course, i will drive a good distance. I wouldn't mind driving to columbus, (hour drive) to play a round or drive down to Cinci or maybe Kentucky.

I don't know if that's the best idea. I mean, you can do what you want, but I'm always driving OUT of the city to play courses with better values than either of those two.

I have not played Sydney R. Marowitz (9 hole course on the north side) but I have played Jackson park. It is an interesting experience. The course is literally intertwined in and around the city scape. I enjoyed the course, and before the eisenhower was under construction it wasn't a bad ride to get there (about 30 min from my house) The course was certaintly an excellent value and was actually in pretty good shape when I played it.

It's an okay layout but it seems like it's a 6 hour round minimum and last season the first 3 holes seemed to be flooded so I kind of gave up hope on it. I actually think Marovitz is a much nicer layout but unfortunately the course tends to get pretty hacked up and unless you catch lightning in a bottle, you're in for the longest 9 holes of golf you'll ever play.

My comments weren't so much to demean those two courses, but rather just a comment that I personally have found driving out to the suburbs is a better golf experience which equates to better value in my mind.
