Went to the regional qualifier for the world long drive competition in dallas today. To my surprise, Jamie Sadlowski was there. It was probably the worst day imaginable to host a competition cause there was a 25 mph wind directly in their faces. A few still managed to hit the ball over 300 yards, with the top 8 who qualified for the finals coming in at 325-310. Jamie, who happens to be an extremely nice fellow, and one of the smallest guys there, hit one 324 earlier in the day, but was the last to qualify with a 313 in the final round.

I was surprised though, some of these guys were hitting it all over the place, with only one or two qualifying balls out of their alloted six. But if you ever need confirmation that you're not the only one hitting wayward drives, go watch one of these. They may hit it a long way, but they're rarely accurate.

I was also hoping to see Jack Hamm blast one 450, but sadly he couldn't make it. I guess he was too busy hitting balls over mountains.

Yeah I've been to one of those. It's pretty cool to watch how far a golf ball can be hit. Kinda gets old after awhile though, and it's sooo far from actual golf.

yeah. i wonder if any of these guys can actually play golf, not just smack the ball a mile.

I played in a charity event where they had a long drive (forget his name) play a hole with your group. The guy hit it a mile and hit an ok chip (2 of us were closer). His claim was he made more money doing charity events and long drive tourneys than he would playing on tour. I personally don't think he would have been good enough to play on tour but I only got one to see him play.

Many Long Drive guys are very good golfers......which is a far cry from being on the nationwide tour. Just building your game on one club ,,,,around launch angles, shaft dynamics...etc... Is not tournament golf.

Still waiting for the great Jack Hamm show up at a Long Drive, or PGA Event....I've heard that if he could just three putt he would make 1 mil a year on the tour!!! POW !!!

They're better than you think. Many of them are low single digit, and quite a few are scratch and better. When you have the ability to hit a club that squarely with such a high swing speed, you will also have the ability to scramble well. They can swing easy when they want and hit it very well. They aren't accurate in their contests, but it's not an accurate drive contest. Using a 48" driver with 4° of loft won't often be accurate. They are just trying to hit the center of the face and send the ball as far as possible.

Apparently, we have quite a few members on this forum with 15 handicaps who could easilly win these long drive contests though.

lol... wouldn't even be close. i think one guy said he hit a 6 iron 270. couldn't imagine what his driving distance would be.

You know, in fairness, Jack Hamm still holds the world record for the longest carry ever achieved. 458 yards at Highlands Ranch, Colorado on July 20th, 1993. It's a suburb of Denver, and it's about a mile in the air, yes, but it's still the world record, and no one in that 17 years has beaten it, even in the same location. So, yes, he's an idiot, but he does hold the record, and that can't be disputed.
